Stephen Hawking in 1965, looking pimp. [pic] (i.imgur.com)

he's been trapped in his own body for decades, and yet he hasn't been tempted into thinking the universe owes him anything for being a good sport about it. that is inspiring.

I know. I was trying to make a joke about how Christians act like the universe (God) owes them something.
[–]scsoc 22 points23 points24 points 1 year ago
That if you follow the rules you get to live forever.
[–]scsoc 15 points16 points17 points 1 year ago
Except the facts don't line up that way, so he doesn't, but a lot of religious people still do.
[–]shrodikan 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Would you mind giving a brief rundown of that exchange? All I see is [deleted]... [deleted]... [deleted]...
[–]Snarfleez 8 points9 points10 points 1 year ago
I'll offer my perspective as a former Christian.
When I was a theist, I believed the world (and by extension, the Universe) was a just system, and that God (who I understood to be a fair, benevolent, loving judge) was in control. So when more trouble befell me than I thought was due, I felt a bit slighted at times. Here I was, living what I thought to be an exemplary life in the eyes of God - I did my best to obey his rules and life a righteous, moral life. So why should my life be plagued with more hardships than the iniquitous sinners around me? It just didn't seem right. In that way, I think that quite a few Christians could be said to "feel like the Universe owes them something".
Of course, since then, I've managed to realize that the god I believed in simply didn't align with reality. In fact, that was the catalyst that led me to abandon my faith.
[–]Mordred19 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
I was referencing hawking's latest statement about the afterlife being a fairy tale. I mean I think that for some people, coping with hardship means telling yourself that things will get better COMPLETELY in the end. "I'll go to heaven, I'll get a resurrected body, I'll get my legs back, my sight back, my hearing back etc, because I put up with it in THIS life." instead of accepting an irrational hope like "karma" or something to make up for the bad hand he was dealt in life, he has found value in his internal analyses of the universe and the act of sharing it with the rest of humanity. he doesn't expect tit for tat cosmic justice. he's just moving past it like it's beneath him, he's got work to do. but I could be acting overly presumptuous here, about spirituality being applied to personal disabilities, but I don't think I could be so rational about the hard facts of an indifferent universe, if I found myself paralyzed and had lost these abilities I have known all my life up to now.
[–]KFCandPurpleDrank 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
This is kind of a moot point when you're a scientist. It doesn't take much courage to not want to resort to such thought when it's a completely irrational choice.
[–]citizen113 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
Because Stephen Hawking is an autonomous autonoatomon, and discarded his fuzzy neural network years ago in favor of a bread-board type binary switching apparatus that he stashes under his seat.
[–]m4tthew 50 points51 points52 points 1 year ago
Stephen Hawking in 2007, looking limp. pic
I'm going to hell for this one.
[–]rantandrage 49 points50 points51 points 1 year ago
you're in luck, there is no hell.
just means you're an asshole!
[–]m4tthew 13 points14 points15 points 1 year ago

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
Novelty accounts are occasionally funny when they are at least based on a unique premise.
[–]GRATEFUL_ALLCAPS_GUY -1 points0 points1 point 1 year ago
THANK YOU FOR YOUR ASTUTE OBSERVATION. I MEAN, IT DIDN'T REALLY HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH ANYTHING, BUT I TRULY APPRECIATE THE DEPTH OF THAT COMMENT.
[–]cmmoyer 7 points8 points9 points 1 year ago
its hard to believe that he's almost 70 years old
[–]0sirisdev 17 points18 points19 points 1 year ago
I always like this picture... but is it just me or does he look like Austin Powers?
[–]poundingbassline 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
The young Austin Powers, definitely.
[–]bureaucrat_36 16 points17 points18 points 1 year ago
That is one dapper, brilliant man!
[–]Incestuous_Unicorn 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
Came here to say he looked dapper only to be crushed by the realization that I'm not the only person who uses the word still
[–]bureaucrat_36 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
HA! (sorry, feel free to spread the term 'dapper' far and wide, my friend! It should be used by all.)
[–]ittehbittehladeh 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
Sad hipster hears someone else use his favorite outdated word!
[–]ArcWinter 8 points9 points10 points 1 year ago
Upvoted for dapper.
On topic, the only way he could look cooler was if he had a monocle.
[–]bac5665 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Why the heck were you downvoted?
[–]ArcWinter 9 points10 points11 points 1 year ago
Someone here hates monocles.
Obviously, they must be a religious fundamentalist, because logically, all monocles are totally awesome.
[–]A_Monocle_For_Sauron 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Monocles make everyone look classier.
You sir are biased.
This honestly isn't a novelty account. I just thought the name up when I had been up for ≈ 20 hours and decided to go with it.
[–]ittehbittehladeh 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
I figured as much, but the point still stands! ;D
[–]Jammie1 10 points11 points12 points 1 year ago*
He's a fellow at my college and he truly is an inspiration. Despite his disability he still comes and eats dinner in hall on an almost weekly basis, and I've seen him in the bar once too!
[–]KFCandPurpleDrank 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
Serious question: How does he eat?
[–]Jammie1 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
His helper feeds him
[–]popejupiter -3 points-2 points-1 points 1 year ago
He eats an entire dinner hall? [/trollface]
[–]warbaby-baby -1 points0 points1 point 1 year ago
an almost weekly basis
[–]herbalism 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
Hawking proved mathematically the existence of singularities before he turned 30, even though he was suffering from a debilitating disease. This guy is the definition of a pimp.
He has said that that is what inspired him.
[–][deleted] 11 points12 points13 points 1 year ago
I'm glad he at least got laid before his body gave out on him.
[–]jsmayne 20 points21 points22 points 1 year ago
as Hawking says.... It only effects voluntary muscles
[–]psygnisfive 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Erections aren't caused by musculature.
[–]mybeardisbetter 13 points14 points15 points 1 year ago

[–]Generation_Why 7 points8 points9 points 1 year ago
He was into Hawking radiation before it was cool.
[–]psygnisfive 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Oh I get it, it's funny because Hawking radiation is a way that black holes cool down! Clever!
[–]andrewsmith1986 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago

In 1965 Britain, limp affects you.
[–]dopplerdog 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
You're offered a choice: you can become Lucasian professor of Mathematics at Cambridge, find fame and fortune, and devote your life to physics and intellectual pursuits, but you're consigned to a wheelchair for the rest of your life.
Any takers?
[–]Throwasdas 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
Being confined to a wheelchair is the least of his problems.
[–]mrjack2 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
His (ex) wife was/is a quite devout Christian, and she struggled with his atheism. It was a major theme in her autobiography... a very sad book, worth a read even if (like most of us in r/atheism ) you don't subscribe to her views. I gather later editions than the one I read were not so bleak, though.
[–]AlisInWonderland 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
IMO he looks super attractive there.
[–]InvisibleRainbow 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
TIL young Stephen Hawking was cute.
[–]Genmaken 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Stephen Hawking is just a vessel for the alien creature living inside... unfortunately the aliens artificial human shell decayed at a faster rate than expected.

That's what i was thinking, almost identical.
[–]mimiblu 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
Wandered into the comments to see if anyone else thought the same. :)
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
I would think it'd be the other way around, since Hawking is older then the glee kid.
[–]flobots204 -1 points0 points1 point 1 year ago
Fixed.
[–]shwey 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Came here to say this haha.
[–]flobots204 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago

[–]shandelier 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago

Wonderful, wonderful pic! Gives me warm fuzzies.
[–]telegrams 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
It was nicer back then, but now those days are gone, and now I feel sad because we can't put the right resources into the research that could help him and people like him.
Oh well, he's still an awesome guy.
[–]behemuthm 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
If they ever make a biopic of Hawking, they seriously need to cast Noah Taylor for the part.
