he's been trapped in his own body for decades, and yet he hasn't been tempted into thinking the universe owes him anything for being a good sport about it. that is inspiring.

I know. I was trying to make a joke about how Christians act like the universe (God) owes them something.

Except the facts don't line up that way, so he doesn't, but a lot of religious people still do.

I'll offer my perspective as a former Christian.

When I was a theist, I believed the world (and by extension, the Universe) was a just system, and that God (who I understood to be a fair, benevolent, loving judge) was in control. So when more trouble befell me than I thought was due, I felt a bit slighted at times. Here I was, living what I thought to be an exemplary life in the eyes of God - I did my best to obey his rules and life a righteous, moral life. So why should my life be plagued with more hardships than the iniquitous sinners around me? It just didn't seem right. In that way, I think that quite a few Christians could be said to "feel like the Universe owes them something".

Of course, since then, I've managed to realize that the god I believed in simply didn't align with reality. In fact, that was the catalyst that led me to abandon my faith.

I was referencing hawking's latest statement about the afterlife being a fairy tale. I mean I think that for some people, coping with hardship means telling yourself that things will get better COMPLETELY in the end. "I'll go to heaven, I'll get a resurrected body, I'll get my legs back, my sight back, my hearing back etc, because I put up with it in THIS life." instead of accepting an irrational hope like "karma" or something to make up for the bad hand he was dealt in life, he has found value in his internal analyses of the universe and the act of sharing it with the rest of humanity. he doesn't expect tit for tat cosmic justice. he's just moving past it like it's beneath him, he's got work to do. but I could be acting overly presumptuous here, about spirituality being applied to personal disabilities, but I don't think I could be so rational about the hard facts of an indifferent universe, if I found myself paralyzed and had lost these abilities I have known all my life up to now.

This is kind of a moot point when you're a scientist. It doesn't take much courage to not want to resort to such thought when it's a completely irrational choice.

Because Stephen Hawking is an autonomous autonoatomon, and discarded his fuzzy neural network years ago in favor of a bread-board type binary switching apparatus that he stashes under his seat.

Upvoted for dapper.

On topic, the only way he could look cooler was if he had a monocle.

[–]ArcWinter 9 points10 points ago

Obviously, they must be a religious fundamentalist, because logically, all monocles are totally awesome.

He's a fellow at my college and he truly is an inspiration. Despite his disability he still comes and eats dinner in hall on an almost weekly basis, and I've seen him in the bar once too!

Hawking proved mathematically the existence of singularities before he turned 30, even though he was suffering from a debilitating disease. This guy is the definition of a pimp.

You're offered a choice: you can become Lucasian professor of Mathematics at Cambridge, find fame and fortune, and devote your life to physics and intellectual pursuits, but you're consigned to a wheelchair for the rest of your life.

Any takers?

His (ex) wife was/is a quite devout Christian, and she struggled with his atheism. It was a major theme in her autobiography... a very sad book, worth a read even if (like most of us in r/atheism ) you don't subscribe to her views. I gather later editions than the one I read were not so bleak, though.
