I have actually been to crater lake, it was really neat, but i was 12, so i guess i need to make another trip there, this time on my dime, my dad would appreciate it.

I feel like a horrible ex-Oregonian. Having grown up and lived in Portland for 12+ years, I never made a trip there. I'd love to go in the winter but I think it's closed, right?

[–]hogimusPrime 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thats okay. I have lived in Portland-area for going on 25 years now I have not ever been there. You should, however, feel ashamed for leaving Oregon and hence having to refer to yourself as an "ex-".

[–]CouvCreeker 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I know way too many folks that could say that. No idea what they're missing. It's like St Helens in a way. Only more so. Nothing prepares you for the immensity of it, or the sheer beauty, until you're actually there.

[–]Monkey_Knife_Fight 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So true. I remember the last time I visited Crater Lake there were plenty of people around, but everyone was silent.

[–]Osiris32 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's stunning. It's why I love Oregon so much. We have so much beauty around here, a lot of it an hour's drive from Portland, and the rest is WELL worth the trip. I'm never leaving.

[–]Monkey_Knife_Fight 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You and me both. When my family comes out here from Denver or Minnesota, they can't believe that we have so much that's so close.

[–]hogimusPrime 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm never leaving.

Amen brother. I've tried leaving, and been to some pretty nice places (Eugene, Denver, East Bay-Area in NorCal). I inevitably end up back here. I'm resigned to my fate now, I don't even try to fight it anymore. Honestly it seems crazy to me to even want to leave.

I've gone much further afield than that. Austin, Memphis, Kansas City, Duluth, Philidelphia, New York, Jacksonville, LA, Reno, DC, and others. None of them have the same combination of weather, geography, city planning, economy, and culture of Portland/Willamette Valley. We're just that kick ass.

[–]hogimusPrime 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

We're just that kick ass.

Agreed. We really are. Aside from all you mentioned let us not forget the fact that we have more craft breweries per capita than anyone else in the world. I especially like that part.

[–]Osiris32 0 points1 point ago

And more strip clubs than any city in the US. Also more knife manufacturers. Which is a really weird combo.

It just sucks up the sound. Last time we went, it was late Sept, and nearly devoid of people. Nothing but wind.

not entirely closed, you just need to stay at a different lodge and hike in with snow shoes due to the massive amounts of snow. It is definitely worth seeing in the winter though.

[–]spankymedia 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You can rent snowmobiles nearby and make the trek... totally worth it.

[–]Redditheist 1 point2 points ago

The rim road is closed in the winter. I think spring would be amazing though. It's kinda high desert there so gets a little brown and dried out in the surrounding areas in the summer.

[–]MetalChick 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, I live near Bend and have lived in Oregon from birth til now and I haven't been either.

My husband and I were talking about making a trip there soon just last week.

[–]Fireman_071 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's open in the winter. I live about an hour from there and we partake in the free snow shoe tours that are put on by the forest rangers.

[–]grumpydragon 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Don't worry 90% of the time you can't see that lake anyway, you only see dense fog and clouds (and you can get that in Portland)

[–]SergeyTuganov 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I found this place completely by accident. I had seen a picture in a geology textbook, but never knew where the place was.

While I was driving through Oregon, I was diverted to a detour by a forest fire. I spontaneously decided to turn into a park I was passing, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I ever made. Spontaneous discoveries are the best kind.

[–]Cryptomemetic 2 points3 points ago

Word. I went in the summer and remember playing in some snow on one of the crater rims. That was a pretty awesome experience.

Never been out to Wizard Island (that's the name, right?); I think the ferry's were being switched out when I was there. Was still an awesome place.

I am kinda pissed that you have to pay fees to enter national parks. Fucking absurd given that my tax dollars should be paying for the national park service. It's not a lot of money. But when I was doing a roadtrip a few summers ago, it added up. We were all pretty broke and barely had enough for gas. We spent a few night sleeping in the car. If we planned better we might have got an all park access pass, but it was a rather unplanned trip. Mainly we just wanted to quickly pass through, take a gander and snap a few pics. But the smallest fee was for a seven day pass. We ended up spending 3 hours at the Grand Canyon and had to pay $25. Plus there was a damn fire whose smoke obscured the view. Not worth it at all. On the other hand Yosemite was pretty cool and completely worth it, but we spent almost a week there. I guess I wouldn't mind so much if they had a 1 day road-tripper pass at a lower price than the 7 day pass. For people passing through who only have time to take a look and go.

[–]Osiris32 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Your tax dollars do go to paying for NPS, Fish and Wildlife, USFS, and BLM. However, the republicans in government want to privatize all of our public land, and therefore cut their budgets heavily. Hell, they're having problems staffing enough firefighters for the wild land fire season.

I used to work for Fish and Wildlife. Best job I've ever had. Got cut due to budget constraints. Fucking hell.

Awesome photo of an awesome lake! I went there and was amazed. It's a lake formed in the caldera of a huge volcano, and the island is another bit that welled up thousands of years ago. There are no rivers going into or out of the lake. All the water is from snow melt on the rim and it has some of the clearest water for a lake in the world. Also it's the deepest lake in the US.

No native fish, but at one point they did add fish and regretted it later as it wasn't good for the water clarity. Most are gone now but the rangers joke that you can fish the lake and catch all you want, no limit.

The roads are all up on the rim and I don't think any roads actually go down to the water. I do suggest taking the hike down to get to the water though, just know it's a steep hike down/back up. The boat tour is well worth it though and they take you around the whole lake and then let you walk around on the island for a bit. And the local campgrounds are nice. Just an all-around gorgeous area.

Went to Crater Lake last summer. There was still snow at the top in July and we used it to chill our beer while we camped out. Absolutely beautiful although the mosquitoes are pretty intense.

It's important to remember that in the vicinity of crater lake there are an incredible number of beautiful vistas and scenic highways. From the redwood forests of northern CA to Klamath all the way up to Eugene, there is some gorgeous scenery that everyone should try to see. Really makes you appreciate the majesty of the Pacific Northwest.

I climbed Mt Scott when we were down there last fall. It's the one the sun is setting into in that photo. That's another amazing hike! About 9000', and the only place other than an airplane you can take a picture of the entire lake. Truly the highest place in the park!

I went there on a Jewish, community service, cross country bus trip. We stopped there for prayers. A couple of us climbed over the stone fence to get to a nice flat patch of forest. As I was climbing down, I put my siddur into my hoodie pocket. It slipped out and rolled down the hill. My friends tried to grab it but it just rolled down the hill. I could only stare in horror as my prayer book skipped up and over the last bump, out of view. A couple of seconds later I heard a slow clap.

How bizarre. I was there only this morning! Our B&B owners son works on site, we bumped into him today and overheard him mention the snow/ice levels have finally begun to drop around the roadsides. I was somewhat underdressed in shorts and tshirt, though.

I have been such a long term lurker on here but this has pushed me to write my first comment (once I figured out using Alien Blue how to do so :D). I'm currently here on my first trip to the USA from England. I flew into Vancouver, caught the train down to Seattle and have hired a convertible to take down to San Francisco. Went through Olympic National Park, stopped off in Portland, then again in Fort Klamath (just outside Crater Lake, maybe 30min drive). Today took me out of Oregon to California.

Anyway, my plans are irrelevant. I wholeheartedly recommend the Pacific Northwest, especially as a foodie! To those that have not made the trip and have this scenery on their doorstep (all things relative, I'm British living in England), you're missing out.
