There comes a point when these numbers just make me numb and don't mean anything to me. 13 billion light years? Might as well be a hundred

13,000,000,000,000 might as well be 100? From ignition to death, the life span of the sun is around 10 billion years. In comparison, people have lived past one-hundred years.

I think a better way of saying what you meant is it might as well be infinite.

13,000,000,000 = 13 bill. 13,000,000,000,000 = 13 trill. But your point is still relevant

Why can't the rest of reddit be as polite as we are?

That's a great question. I think it's kind of like people who are nice to you but not to waitresses are, in general, bad people. I think anonymity acts the same way. People who are genuine are polite while people who aren't are rude simply because they can be. What people say while anonymous reflects the kind of person they really are. Unfortunately, most people are assholes who hold no respect or consideration for their fellow man. How people drive is another example of this.

Of course, this is just speculation. I would like to be proven wrong somehow. This exchange, however, is refreshing.

I enjoyed reading this exchange. Granted not in the "let's go get the popcorn" kinda way, but rather a "ahh, that was pleasant."

I want a superpower to visit each galaxy, and survive within each one.

I'd like to know more about the galaxy said to be too large.

[–]HigherFive 2 points3 points ago

Agreed. How does its existence contradict current physics theories?

It's existence challenges the Big Bang theory by being very massive and mature for it's age. Here is an article about it.

The galaxy said to be too large is called HUDF-JD2. You can read more about it here.

Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving and revolving at 900 miles an hour...

[–]CompanionCalculator[S] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

that's orbiting at nineteen miles a second, so it's reckoned, a sun that is the source of all our power...

I don't know if it's just me, but whenever I see things like this, I'm kind of left in awe of how awesome (and in the literal use of the word) the universe. The immense size of it leaves me feeling so insignificant. Space in it's entirety, to me, is the most interesting thing to think about. Thanks for the gif.

i'm so fucking sick of this whole "we are so small and insignificant. look at the fucking ginormous stars" phase all the motivational speakers are doing. and they all think they are unique and have studied it themselves. I've seen 3 speakers, and two videos talking about it. uh /rant

[–]mandar26 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Just because we are small doesn't mean we're insignificant

[–]wickedsteve 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It depends which definition you use and your frame of reference. "Small in size, quantity, or number" is the 4th definition here http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/insignificant

To your mom or your child you may be very significant, but to the galaxy you are so insignificant and that is just the galaxy.
