Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

Yes. On the famous shore of.... Berlin.

Even in 5 pieces, how would one manufacture that much surface?? Dang. And then seal it without reinforcing straps? I've never really wanted to visit Germany, at least not before a couple dozen other places that I won't have time or money to see anyways, but this really might be worth the trip!

[–]na85 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Germany is a fun place to visit, I had a great time when I visited Munich in the summer.

People are pretty laid back, and we spent most of our days enjoying the sunshine and a nice cold beer in one of the many beer gardens or cafe patios.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I visited Munich

Yeah, that's Bavaria. Technically German, but more towards Germany as Texas is to the US.

[–]na85 -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Either you're trying to be a travel hipster or you're mistaken. "Technically German" is a ridiculous way of describing Munich.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No. I'm German and my sister lives in Bavaria. Same country, different planets.

[–]beneaththeradar 5 points6 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

he's pretty spot on describing it as Germany's Texas (been to Germany several times, am a travel hipster).

Germany as a nation is relatively young. before Bismark it was a collection of loosely aligned kingdoms that often went to war against each other. The culture and even the language changes depending on where you are. The north, especially around Berlin, is the old Prussian heartland. Bavaria was always separate and usually opposed to the Prussians - they even had their own king for a while.

While things have homogenized greatly in the modern era, Bavaria (and Munich as its capital) still retains a unique culture and heritage. I imagine he was being tongue and cheek when described it as "technically German" much in the same way Americans joke about Texas not really being part of the States.

[–]na85 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They joke about Texas not being part of the states? News to me, but maybe you have to be American to hear that stuff.

In any case, Bavaria was plenty German for me when I visited.

If you live in Berlin, try Dolores. Not technically Mexican, but San Francisco style burritos are something I thought I'd never find in Germany.

I bet you did. Unless it's run by mexicans, it's going to be terrible. Even then you need to know what to order.

The day I went up in that elevator… it got stuck. :-|

The sent some divers to do… something on the outside of the elevator, and then we were free again. But it was starting to get a leeeetle bit claustrophobic for a minute there.

That's probably it, I just remember it was one of those hotel chain hotels...

[–]Oliibird -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, I believe it's part of some sort of large aquarium. My dad and I paid one of the guides (who was walking around with a group who had been in the other parts of the aquarium) some money to go on the elevator without buying tickets for the aquarium.

It was a really cool experience!

[–]FSU_Fan2004 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Both are correct. That part is inside of a Radisson but it's I guess owned and operated by some aquarium whose name escapes me. The elevator ride up and down the side of the cylinder is the "grand finale" of the aquarium tour.

[–]skarface6 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, the wiki says it's part of a sealife center or something.

Why does that remind me of Zoidberg's tank. It just needs the little treasure chest that opens and closes.

okay when I visited Berlin I stayed in the old neighborhoods at this sweet old mansion...like one of the few that survived the War. It was insanely pimp, like something out of a James Bond movie (complete with a stable of supercars parked out front as all the guests were rich as midas)

Now I regret staying that because if I hadn't I would have stayed at the Raddisson and been able to see this amazing thing!

Yep. One of my favorites I saw in Germany. But Dom still means cathedral--that is far from the only one.

[–]zedvaint 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The point I was trying to get across was: The AquaDom didn't get its name from a similarity with a cathedral, it got it because the cathedral is next door.

This is one of those things that seems cool until you actually go there. It's part of a hotel, but you can pay to go up it as a visitor (there's an elevator in the middle). It's really anticlimactic, though. As it is, it's just water with fish in it. It would be much cooler if there was a raging sea monster that you had to defeat in order to go back down. But alas...

[–]Sirianjazz 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree, I live in Berlin and last summer took my son there as it was one of the touristy "features" Berlin has to offer which we'd never done.. The little mirror maze in the sealife center leading to this was pretty fun, everything else, including this was pretty anticlimactic!

Similar when I took him to Berlins lego land, which could imo be more suitably named, "lego room"..
