  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

It's not like they can just yank it out of his face and call it good.

I nearly cut my leg off on the 4th of july when I was much younger. I waited around while nurses filed in and out of the room to "HOLY CHRIST!" (I guess I was in shock, because I could tell that it hurt, but it was more just that I was aware of it, not that it actually registered in pain. The nurses kept saying they couldn't believe I wasn't crying) over my leg for about 30 minutes before I finally went into surgery.

This guy is probably waiting for the same thing.

    A pretty bad dirtbiking accident.

    I hit a little jump on it, and the kick starter popped out. When I landed, it rammed into my leg, hit the bone, and then somehow twisted halfway around my knee.

    I still have a pretty wicked scar from it (and probably always will)

      My friend was doing a safety instruction on how to use an ax at boy scout camp and when he was showing how dangerous it was and decided to show them how to properly chop wood he somehow completely missed the log and embedded the ax into his thigh. As ironic as it is we don't talk about it around him because he still insists it was rotten wood and the ax slipped through.

      A couple years ago i almost cut my thumb off with a machete on my birthday, ended up going to the emergency room drunk as hell, couldn't even feel it (prolly cause i cut the nerve, not from the booze). I had the whole ER staff rolling though as i squirted blood onto the walls when i took the bandage off it.

      but yea, hospitals are like the military, hurry up and wait. unless your about to die on the curb your not a priority. even if you do come in with a knife in your face, its still medically not that urgent unless your flat lining.

            It's a pretty clear HIPAA violation in the US. You can't publish identifying features of a patient without their permission. This guy's face and tattoos clearly violate that. There's probably more to this picture than we know, but posting a picture like this on the internet would result in major HIPAA fines.

            Judging by the ungloved hands holding the other camera phone, I'd guess it's just a friend taking it. Though I'd love to see this be a provider at my hospital. The last time a staff member took a picture of a patient, the charge nurse walked over, ripped off her name tag, security walked her to her locker and then to her car.

              At my job, they will tell you at the end of your shift if you are an employee, then have a supervisor observe you while you clean out your desk. If you are a temp or a contractor, they will call you at home, and box your things for you to pick up.

              They are pretty respectful, actually.

                    Doctors and medical professionals take picutres like this all the time, its not a HIPPA violation to take pictures for internal training purposes. This post is definately a misuse or violation but the pictures themselves are not.

                    Hate to break it to you but, every training and evidence picture in the last few years has been taken with a cell phone. As the saying goes: the best camera is the one you have in your pocket. By the time the official hospital photographer arrives the patient will be out of surgery, and besides today's cell phone is as good as his 10 year old SLR.

Taking evidence pictures in that setting on a personal cell phone clearly violates HIPAA regulations and the cops probably have a camera in their cars solely for this purpose.                     I work as a scribe part time in an ER that recently upgraded its electronic medical record system. If the patient agrees to it, docs will snap a photo with their smartphone, email it to themselves, and can put it in the patient chart or use it for training purposes. It happens fairly frequently, with video too.

                    I don't think it would if the patient agrees to it. I'm not going to read through HIPAA, but I'd wager that physicians generally know what they can and can't do. And as for police using camera phones, I've seen that as well (granted, it was of a knife and not of the patient specifically).

                    Interesting. I couldn't prove to you that it does violate it, but from my experience the regulations are pretty damn strict. Where I work you get some pretty serious repercussions if you so much as forward an email from your work account to a personal one. I'd guess that unsecured cell phones would also fall under the personal category.

                    I have a good friend who is an interventional cardiologist (balloon angioplasties, stents, catheterizations to open occluded arteries). He takes pics of patients (extremities only) all the time with his iPhone. They are usually deformed and damaged feet/legs and they are gross. He has them all in his iPhoto library and I'll come across them sometimes when we're on vacation together and sharing computers to move family pics around and stuff. I go "gross!" and he giggles.....

                      It's a pretty clear HIPAA violation in the US.

                      It's not clear at all, since we don't know who took the photo. If it was a friend/relative, HIPAA doesn't apply. If it was the police, HIPAA might apply. If it was the hospital, HIPAA applies, but the guy might have given permission.

                            Their means of communicating can be ingenious. We are currently installing a system that will only allow the toilet to be flushed twice per hour because they use the sudden void in the plumbing to verbally communicate to cells below or above them.

                                          It's definitely NSFW but it's really not that bad unless you're extremely freaked out by blood. And really, it's not that much blood (compared to say a scalp wound or something).

                                            Considering the head is protected by skull (as Bad with knives recently discovered) I would suggest that the chest is the obvious target, the throat is good if you can get it, and there are major blood vessels in the groin and thighs you could try for.

                                              In my (thankfully) very few encounters with police I have seen every single one of them flip out their phones for one reason or another (usually to take a picture of something). They probably just use phones because it'd be pretty difficult to carry a real camera, and evidence has a funny way of being removed (not in this case =P) from the open view of the officer(s).

                                                    By the looks of it, he was stabbed just under (or in) the cheekbone, which isn't likely to be fatal unless the knife goes in WAY farther than that one did.

                                                    As ReplaceSelect posted above me, of all the places to get stabbed in the face, that's probably one of the best. There are no major veins to cut, if it goes deep enough it will likely jam on the cheek bone, and other than looking nasty he probably won't have too many long-term effects from it. An inch higher and he would have lost his eye, and inch lower and it would have either ripped his cheek open or punched through into the back of his throat (depending upon the angle).

                                                    Now, with all that said, I'm highly disappointed in this entire thread for not a single person having yet mentioned "China Town".
