I think I may have to change my SSID from "Pretty Fly for a WiFi" to "It hurts when IP" (Or should it be Hz?)

[–]schmalls 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It should most definitely be Hz.

[–]itsprobablytrue 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

mine has always been "some guy next door". Mostly no one sees it because I leave the SSID invisible, but that does nothing for this joke doe sit.

[–]ten_thousand_puppies 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You realize turning off the SSID beacon (making it "invisible") is worse than pointless yes? It makes it a bigger pain when you have to connect, and deters nobody who wants to know what your SSID is from knowing it

[–]The_MAZZTer -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you know the SSID it is not a pain, you just find the UI for connecting to a hidden wifi and type it in. If you don't know the SSID you probably shouldn't have changed it...

It would be more of a pain if someone sees your network, joins it, and starts stealing all your bandwidth. Maybe you have a strong encryption key, but why take the chance?

[–]ten_thousand_puppies 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A) Turning off the SSID beacon screws with things in most network implementations

B) If someone wanted to break into your network, they still could, even if you did disable it. Turning it off doesn't mean someone with a program like inSSIDer couldn't find it anyway (and anyone trying to wardrive will have a program like it installed)

Like I said, it does jack shit, and makes your life more annoying. No point to it. At all.

Like I said, it does jack shit, and makes your life more annoying. No point to it. At all.

This is also the case with using MAC address whitelisting/blocking as a security precaution. Don't do this to yourself. It doesn't even take a minute to bypass for anyone with the most trivial knowledge about networks.

Use WPA2, don't hide your SSID, don't mess with MAC addresses and use only channel 1, 6 or 11. ONLY. EVER. If you got an older device that won't work try WPA1. If it still does not work, buy a new. That's everything you need to know about wireless LAN.

[–]Smith7929 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was under the impression that MAC filtering would not slow down your connection at all while WPA2 does.

I'm not trying to protect myself from hackers, I just want to stop the dumbasses with PC names like "RayRay's PC" or "Shaniqua's IPOD" from connecting to my WiFi without slowing down my connection.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, though. Personally I don't care for MAC filtering I just feel like I have to. :)

[–]Irongrip 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Slow down connection? I'm achieving the maximum throughput my wireless card can attain when transfering files, actually I'm getting throttled a bit by the OSes or maybe hdd speeds not sure. Don't know what you're talking about.

[–]brasso 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Correct and for stopping someone from basically connecting by mistake it works. That's also the only thing it works for. I don't recommend it though and the performance loss when using encryption should be minimal. Should be. Might as well just turn it on and be done with it.

Like I said, it does jack shit, and makes your life more annoying. No point to it. At all.

I disagree, I would say that it stops a certain level of wifi stealer. They may know enough to spoof MAC addresses, but what if they don't know enough to use wardrive? Then it has stopped them, ahhah!

[–]ten_thousand_puppies 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Uh, "wardriving" is a term, that refers to going around searching for unprotected (or now "protected" by WEP) Access Points, not a program, so you've given me quite a bit of evidence to doubt you know what you're talking about.

There are TWO things you need to do to secure your wireless network.

1.) Enable WPA2

2.) Pick a strong password

THAT is IT. Anything else is just a fucking waste of time. If you enable WPA2, NOBODY is going to be getting into your network any time soon, and even if they somehow did, they sure as shit would be skilled enough to know to work around MAC filtering and a disabled SSID beacon!

Doing those two things isn't just overkill, it's POINTLESS, COMPLETELY INEFFECTIVE overkill that makes your life more annoying!

[–]neerg 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ah, well, that is embarassing. I should have looked up what that meant first.

And if your neighbor set up a new AP and check which of the 3 channels (1, 6, 11, assuming 802.11g) has the least amount of APs already configured he might not spot it. Slim chance to begin with but if you're also trying to hide your SSID now the chance is impossibly small. So you messed that up too and now your connection is slower because of it. Nice work.

DD-WRT <--- There's your solution.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have issues with the use of DD-WRT, openwrt, and others - Why should you buy a product that the first thing you need to do with is flash a 3rd party firmware onto it? Shouldn't the functionality and stability that you get with dd-wrt already be there in the original product? I don't understand how Linksys seems to get a free pass on selling crippled products by letting the open source folks basically do all the work.

[–]AnteChronos 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why should you buy a product that the first thing you need to do with is flash a 3rd party firmware onto it?

You shouldn't. But if you were to buy a router not realizing that it's crap, at least there exists a way to improve your experience without your having to drop money on yet another router.

Shouldn't the functionality and stability that you get with dd-wrt already be there in the original product?

Yes, but it rarely is.

I don't understand how Linksys seems to get a free pass on selling crippled products by letting the open source folks basically do all the work.

I don't give them a pass at all. I refuse to purchase Linksys routers these days.

My current router is a Netgear. Only after owning it for almost two years have I decided to flash it with dd-wrt, and only because there were two pieces of functionality that I wanted access to that weren't provided by the router:

  1. The ability to forward an external port to a different internal port. I have no clue why this wasn't an option in the base firmware, but it wasn't.

  2. The ability to monitor total network traffic. I'm growing more and more concerned that my ISP might eventually switched to metered service, so I want to know exactly how much data I'm transferring (and the only way to get reliable data is to monitor it on the interface between the LAN and WAN, and not just on one PC).

[–]MHTLuca 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

After using a linksys router for...oh, 6+ years, I switched to netgear and haven't had nearly the amount of problems I had been having.

Then again, maybe it was the user. ;)

[–]renegade7879 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I had quite a few netgear problems over the years, until I became an Apple fanboy. Now I have an Airport Extreme and I haven't touched the thing in 3 years or so.

[–]jerstud56 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Weird - I've had problems with netgear software and zero problems with linksys (other than a 4-port wired router dying on me after 8-9 years) when using DD-WRT. Never tried / don't know if netgear routers allow DD-WRT because I've never looked specifically for them.

So you're right it's probably user-preference along with user-patience with the software at hand.

It seems like they only sell router+modem combos, either DSL or cable, and they are a little expensive.

[–]bdavbdav 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They are a little expensive, but they are great for internet calling - on most you can plug the router into your analog phone line, pair all your cordless DECT phones with it and have it route over analog / sipgate / whoever else as necessary.

[–]hab136 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Interesting, I missed that. I guess compared to buying your own router + DSL/cable modem + SIP gateway they're decently priced.

Do you use the telephony part? Currently I just have Skype plus a mobile phone.

[–]bdavbdav 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I do - I have 3x DECT handsets paired to the router, two to receive personal calls alone, and the third to receive calls on my business SIP line as well as personal calls at my desk. You can set up all kinds of rules etc to have different numbers / countries going through different analog / internet lines. Theres an app for the iPhone too that lets you dial and receive through the router.

Favorite part is the VM to email - both personal and work VMs get emailed to my mobile as WAVs which is nice to have.

I know this is offtopic, but...

Why, after manufacturers have almost completely migrated to widescreen displays, is the vertical comic strip format popular? This strip in particular is 460x1564 - why not lay out the 3 panels horizontally, and get a ~ 1400x500 image, which would come pretty close to fitting on any moderately sized display?

Obviously it's not a big deal, I'm just wondering if someone can explain to me why this is popular?

[–]Leadpipe 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'll have a stab.

It's easier to absorb horizontal peripheral information faster than vertical. So by ordering it vertically, you prevent the reader from reading the punchline before the setup.

That's a blindass unqualified guess, though.

[–]garblesnarky 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Interesting point, and it seems plausible. I would think newspaper comic artists would have figured that out and started doing it years ago, though.

Lots of people are still rocking 800, 1024, or 1280 horizontal pixels.

460x1564 works great on any screen. 1400x500 would cause horizontal scrolling on a lot of screens.

Think about corporate work computers, not gamer laptops. My work computer has a 20" 1600x1200 display, but a number of people turn that into a lower resolution (including 800x600) so that everything's "bigger".
