'Ram' God

'Aman' Peace

'Deep' Light

Literal meaning "God with Light of Peace" in Hindi

What makes this even funnier to me is that the only time I've known a guy named Ram it was short for Ramandeep, which suggests that this guy's parents actually named him Ramandeep Amandeep.

This is why I don't get why Americans are obsessed with giving their kids dumb names. I've met too many Indian kids with ridiculous book names.* (EDIT Explanation: Hindus get their names based on their astrological sign and some parents will stick a kid with a bad name that came from the name book with the "appropriate" names rather than a more aesthetic name.)

There are last names Icecreamwalla and Acidwalla from what I've seen.

uh... those names "Icecreamwalla" and "Acidwalla" aren't based on astrological signs at all, "walla" in Hindi and many other Indian languages means roughly "one who does" (i.e. "Smith" as in "Blacksmith"). So I have friends with the last name of "Africawala" as in, did work in Africa.

Those are last names, so they would already be there. First names are supposed to be chosen through signs.

Ease up, man. Last names mostly are to help to uniquely identify people who have the same first name, since most people would be named on the basis of some things common to civilizatons, like Gods, Saints, horoscopes, and such things and end up with similar or identical first names.

As such, last names will end up including trades, specialties, social sect, town of residence, etc and carry on as inheritance in a lineage/family. Names like Treasurywala, Tyrewala, Bottlewala, Engineer, Shastri are quite of the same sort where it is possibly linked to a family profession. Nadiadwala, Dungarpur, Allagadda, have names of towns in them, and so on.

Big place, even larger variety of people/customs. The names you quote appear to be from the Parsi community, which indicate their ancestral business. Not dis-similar to the origin of Smith (Blacksmith), Taylor (Tailor), Walker (fuller: literally one who "walked" on raw, damp cloth), etc.

Notable hilarious picks for Parsi names are Nutwallah, Screwwalla, Boltwala, etc.
