Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

[–]sgtpppr 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm assuming they used a fake boob for that whole scene. HBO will push the boundaries, but that kid is like how old? It was...quite unexpected. They did kind of foreshadow that she had gone mad since her husband died, but there was no way you were expecting that crazy pale kid and her witch-looking mother breastfeeding him on the throne. I loved the look on Lady Stark and Tyrion's faces when they went into that throne room.

[–]QuayleSpotting 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The only thing we can be sure of is he doesn't want to die by Shagga cutting off his balls and feeding them to a goat.

[–]knylok 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Shagga, in the books, was largely disinterested in capturing Tyrion's (or anyone else's) testicles. He was much more interested in removing their penis and feeding that to the goats. Going after the balls was going too far, apparently.

[–]hickory-smoked 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think they cut a few of Shagga's scenes where he runs that line into the ground. By the time they arrive at the Lannister camp, Tyron has obviously heard it twenty times before, but I don't think the tv audience was familiar with the phrase.

[–]Ezteban92 110 points111 points ago

[–]A_Straw_Man 113 points114 points ago

It's that way with the books as well. All of it is really compelling, but when you come across a chapter focusing on either of those two it's like reaching into a bag of gummy bears and pulling out like 4 red ones in a row.

[–]WhatTheHellMan 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Which is why I think Feast For Crows was the least compelling book, the lack of them was a bit disappointing.

[–]vierce 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Agreed, I started watching the show before reading the books and thought she was pretty decent, even though she obviously didn't care for Jon. Then I got to that part in the book and now find it hard to care about her.

[–]JayTS 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Catelyn, like most characters in the series, has her respectable qualities and her character flaws. She is fiercely loyal to her family, but she sees Jon as an intruder in that family and a constant reminder of Ned's infidelity.

[–]A_Straw_Man 21 points22 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Mmmm it took until the middle of the second book or so before I started getting excited about Jon Stark chapters. But the principle still holds for pretty much whoever is your favorite--tastes vary, but the POV switching is masterful and fulfilling.

[–]Diretemus 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Jon's story in the 2nd book is just as good and only gets better. I really can't wait for them to complete this series, they've done such a good job staying true to the book. Shit, they even use the exact lines from the book in the series. I love it.

[–]Hot_Soup 5 points6 points ago

In the third book he finds out he knows nothing.

[–]GoldenGoat 2 points3 points ago

Eh, I found Jon's part in book 2 to be a bit of a snoozer. Now in book 3, he really takes off. (Of course, every aspect of book 3 large-and-small is indescribably awesome.)

[–]JesusTapdancingChris 7 points8 points ago

I'm loving Game of Thrones.

But I'd be hard pressed to pick a winner between it, The Borgias and the Killing. They're all so great.

[–]evilnight 103 points104 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Allow me to elucidate. Spoiler free, I promise.

Why watch Game of Thrones?

  • a 10+ season cohesive epic story
  • no good vs evil - just people
  • utterly unpredictable plot
  • exceptional storytelling
  • exceptional acting
  • unflinching insanity
  • historical drama
  • fantasy

Winter is coming. Best be prepared.

Fair warning - this is an NC17-equivalent TV series. In fact, it is likely that by the time GoT finishes its run it will hold the record for the most nudity, violence, and disturbing imagery ever used in a television show.

For those of you who find 'fantasy' like LoTR or Camelot to be silly, trite, boring, and unrealistic - the author of this story shared those views, and corrected that problem.

If you are interested, hop over to /r/gameofthrones.

[–]bharnett 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, I think Spartacus: Blood and Sand definitely has more nudity. That show has straight-up soft-core porn in it. Might be more violent too, but GoT has a more compelling story methinks.

[–]frozentedwilliams 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

GoT is soft porn as well. There's a scene a few episodes back where a girl is fingering another chick's asshole, and the only thing they don't show is the actual finger.

[–]Ajdiv 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I didn't notice anything other than generic skin because I was focusing on Littlefinger's speech.

So am I gay now or what?

[–]frozentedwilliams 21 points22 points ago

That's just a sign of how awesome Littlefinger is: when he speaks, you forget that two chicks are going at it ten feet away.

SPOILERS AHEAD:

Let's see...we've had a horse decapitation, a dagger through the face, a toungue ripped out through the throat, a death by smelting, numerous beheadings, a face caved in, 2 girls finger blasting each other in a whorehouse, numerous depictions of sex (at least one per episode), and more bare breasts than you can imagine...all in 8 episodes. If this show goes 5 or 6 seasons, it will easily eclipse the Sopranos as the most graphic thing ever on television.

I keep trying to tell this to my boyfriend. He absolutely hates fantasy, and has completely written off GoT because it's within the same genre. Granted, he also hates anything with swords and feudalistic societies, so I think it's more that than anything else.

[–]junkit33 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

no good vs evil

Perhaps this changes over time, but there is unquestionably a typical good (Starks) vs evil (Lanisters) theme in the first season.

[–]kranse 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Its easy to get that impression since the first book focuses so heavily on the stark family and Eddard is such a paragon. However, as you start to see deeper into the other families and the Starks start to get more ruthless, things get a bit greyer.

[–]DrDragun 5 points6 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Spoilers. Tyrion and Kevan are more virtuous Lannisters than not or at least neutral, and Jaime becomes more sympathetic as the series progresses (although in the TV show he is actually more sympathetic earlier, as it shows Robert's abuse/neglect of his sister right in front of his face, and gives explanations of how horrible the Mad King was) although this is balanced against him throwing a kid out of a window. Cersei and Joff are the only real sadistic ones, though Tywin is a capitalistic asshole who uses terrorism freely in war.

[–]DogXe 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you find time to read... I'd say, watch episode one to get a picture of all the characters faces in your minds eye...Then grab book one, and read it. Watch the entire TV series after you've finished the book.

If you are anything like me, at the end of season 1, you will be desperately wanting to continue the story without having to wait for the next couple of years of HBO productions. And there is another book (5?) on the way soon.

The book, as always, adds a depth to the characters, such as internal monologues, slight observations and so forth, that a TV show, even as great as this one is, cannot provide.

I ended up watching the first 3 episodes and was so impatient and keen to see how the story continued, that I got in the car, then and there, and drove to the book store. Wait a whole week for the next episode?! Sod that.

[–]garhent 1 point2 points ago

Picture of him appeared few days ago too and everyone hyped the series so much that I just had to DL what I could find along with eng subtitles

Today I watched 8th episode, and behold I came to reddit and two topics about it on the front page...

But I am of an opinion that the imp character is just OK, no better or worse than others. As acting goes, theres not even much that Peter Dinklage can act there, not much of an emotions, not much of a time on screen... meh reddit just likes how the character is written, his openness and direct view on life... something like less funny and half the size medieval dr.house, still smart ofc

On a somewhat related note, I can only hope that any attempt at doing the Wheel of Time on TV comes out as decent as this. Because, and I'm sure you'll agree with me when I say this, we all expect that NBC/Universal is going to eventually try and they are highly likely to fuck it up.

I used to love Terry Goodkind, but the show was bad enough- not to mention the way he ended the series with massive deus ex machina and even wrote a post-story book from modern day. Dude got obsessed with Ayn Rand at some point and all his brains seem to have dribbled out through his ears.

[–]stufff 11 points12 points ago

I actually like Ayn Rand, but fuck, some of his later books bordered on outright plagiarism. The one where Richard is a sculptor was absolutely horrible, I wanted to stop reading but I was so compelled to finish the story. I wish I'd just stopped after book 3, what a fucking waste of time. I began to actively hate the author at the point where he had Richard beheading war protesters, with the thinly veiled point that anyone who was against the Iraq war was a traitor. Terry Goodkind is the biggest douchebag I've ever given my money to, and the way he let the series develop just shows that despite all his talk about integrity and important values in his works, he's really just a whore at the end of the day.

I completely agree. I gave up after book four. Amongst all of the other things people are ripping the books for, the egregious number of spelling errors I encountered drove me fucking crazy.

Strangely I really liked Faith of the Fallen where he really seemed to launch that objectivism bullshit.

It got worse and worse and worse and that didn't make me happy.

[–]JamesGray 2 points3 points ago

I really liked Soul of the Fire, but it was all downhill from there in my opinion. Also, The Pillars of Creation was barely readable- and everything after that was me trying to give him the benefit of the doubt to attain closure, though none of it was quite as bad. That didn't go so well though, as the mere mention of Goodkind has irritated me ever since I read the end of Confessor.

Jordan is one of the best artist in this genre. The way he paints scenes is second to none but I gave up after book 6 because it just seemed to be the same as the last book and I didn't see any resolution in sight.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points ago

Personally I chose to read the books first (still working on them, at Feast of Crows now). There is just so much more in the books that they can't possibly portray in the series.

[–]orko1995 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Just a recommendation: When you read the books, DON'T DARE READ ANY WIKI PAGE ABOUT THEM OR ENTER ANY FORUM THAT DEALS WITH THE BOOKS! I spoiled parts of the books for myself that way.

[–]p_funk 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I started watching the show and picked up the books after. I don't have a ton of time so I haven't caught up in the book to the series yet. I'm not really concerned with the show spoiling the book for me, or vice versa if I get a chance to read ahead of the series. In some ways, watching the series has helped with the books in terms of names to faces and that sort of thing, and getting more immersed.

In many cases, the book chapters are almost scene for scene with the show. I've gotten a better understanding of the series by reading the books, either things that they left out, or things I missed/didn't pick up on ,etc.

Really up to you since one will of course spoil the other, and I think those that read the books first get a bit more out of the series, in a similar but slightly different way that someone who watched the series first could get a little more out of the books.

I went through the first 7 episodes w/o realizing who she was. Then as I was rewatching them I stepped out of the room for a second and when I heard her voice I was like "Uhhh... is that Sarah Connor?" It's amazing how much blonde hair and a fancy dress can throw me off.

I've been watching a lot of television this year, but Peter - literally more than anyone else - has been an artist/master of his craft. Seriously, he could play a benign growth on Sean Bean's testicle and I would still recommend him for the Emmy.

How does the show stack up to the books? I've been afraid to start watching and have my mental created world ruined.

[–]Number127 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's a very good adaptation. They've made a few changes, but they're pretty reasonable. For example, most of the actors are about 50% older than their characters were in the book, but that's understandable since you can't exactly show naked 13-year-olds on television.

Storywise, they do a very good job of distilling it down. I started watching the series before I read the book, and I had a little trouble keeping all the characters straight, but if you've read the book that won't be a problem.

[–]Stonevulture 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree with this. Any story changes have been minor and in the name of streamlining and visual economy (some minor consolidation of characters, who does what in what order may change slightly, etc.) but there is great and obvious care to make sure that the intent of the original is not altered. There are some new, dialogue-driven scenes (occasionally spiced up with naked people to keep people paying attention) to replace the fact that you don't get any of the POV characters' interior monologue.

If you can deal with that, then you will love the hell out of the TV show (I am a big fan of the books and I can't wait for each new episode).

[–]JamesGray 6 points7 points ago

Initially, that's what I was thinking. But when I imagine the series with American accents it would somehow have a 'Xena' vibe that I'm not sure it could shake.

But I agree his accent isn't strong. Which sucks, because he kicks ass with everything else about the part.

[–]captainjaneway 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree, his accent is cringe-worthy. But he has to have the same accent as the rest of his family in order to make any kind of sense.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nerdy people often have a sort of "accent." Just consider it that he was probably an extremely pretentious kid who read a lot and now wants to show everyone how smart he is. Then the affected accent kind of works.

[–]DogXe 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Only watched the first 3 episodes, before my impatience sent me down to the book store to buy the first 3 books...

...No way was I waiting a whole week to find out what happened next. I shall watch all of season one, after I finish the first book.

But YES!!

Couldn't agree more, from the very first appearance in the very first episode, this actor was a pure fucking joy to watch, and what more can you ask from your actors, than to make you anticipate their every scene, because they are so damn good!

He deserves all the praise that will be coming his way, and an Emmy would be bloody well deserved.

As a side thought... When I did first see him, I couldn't help but liken him to Hugh Laurie. He had that same glint and gravitas that Hugh brings to the House role. (That is as much to do with the role of Tyrion, I would imagine, who is also a dry, sarcastic wit.)

[–]Birgir 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Anyone else have issues with the accent he has affected? It's not irritating, but the difference is noticeable. Maybe this is what Americans feel about House or McNulty.

[–]InTheYearOfOurLord 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

House and McNulty are both flawless, most people don't know they're English unless they're told. Dinklage's accent seemed off to me as an American, but I'm not a good judge of these things.

Here's a great short video about the character described by the actor. What makes the character so great is how witty he is. As described in the video, what he lacks in physical prowess he makes up for in smarts. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ois_9HGsfkU

[–]arglebargle_IV 3 points4 points ago

His name is Peter Dinklage.

He is currently playing a character named Tyrion Lannister in the HBO series "Game of Thrones."

The show is based on a book of the same name, which is the first volume of a series called "A Song of Ice and Fire" by George R. R. Martin.

Dinklage is also well-known for his roles in the movie "The Station Agent" and the short-lived TV series "Threshold". (And a bunch of other things too, but those are the ones I've seen him in.)

[–]avrus 2 points3 points ago

In a fairly strong cast he is without a doubt my favorite actor and character in the show.
