Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

It is actually scary how little dirt he gets on his shirt. I'm half convinced he changes five times a day to stay spotless.

They've said in interviews that if he thinks he'll get messy, he'll take off his white shirt. He wears a black t-shirt underneath.

I've heard that he has no torso under that white shirt.

There is only another mustache.

Some say his father was a walrus, and that under his beret is a satelite dish.

All we know is.. He's called the Hyneman!

Some say he can convince science to solve itself, just by brushing his manly mustache.

All we know is.. He's called the Hyneman!

James Hyneman is a bit OCD, as the rest of the cast have hinted during the show as well as interviews. He is meticulous about keeping his shirt clean even when he's not wearing it.

Supposedly, he is also very anal about his shop, such as requiring an exact number of pens and pencils in each cup at each drafting table and becoming fairly irate when that balance is off.

Not that it detracts from him at all. Fuck 'em. It's his shop after all.

Nope, when you are that good, dirt and paint don't happen on your clothes.

Now eatin' that's a whole different issue....

[–]TheCodexx 3 points4 points ago

Jamie mixes a paste and then eats it from a tube.

No, I'm entirely serious. I have no idea how many meals per day he ate them or if he still does, but at one point he made his own tube-food.

[–]Mobidad 7 points8 points ago

He only did that for the marathon driving experiment. They had to spend hours driving so he figured that was the easiest way to eat while driving.

[–]TheCodexx 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I heard he regularly ate that way at one point. At least a certain number of meals per day. I want to say it was Grant who said that once, but I can't seem to find it on Google.

Are you saying "the myth of Jamie's clean white shirt" should be on the show next season?

[–]DZ302 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I heard he's a giant douche IRL, I watched some behind the scenes video where he ripped apart the cameraman filming him for not organizing pens/markers/paper towel properly, etc...

[–]Honda_TypeR 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yea I heard the same thing, now that you mention it again.

Where did we hear that from? Was it on one of the Mythbuster specials where they show behind the scenes stuff?

[–]DZ302 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'll be able to find it when I get off work. I remember he complained for like 2 minutes about paper towel, when it was on the shelf behind him. He basically ripped apart the camera man treating him like dirt rambling on for about 5 minutes, when everything he complained about was invalid, everything that was supposed to be in his little shelf for markers, paper, tape, etc...was there.

[–]Honda_TypeR 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yea man I remember all that too now. It had to be one of the "specials" they did with behind the scenes stuff. I bet that camera man knew the editor and got the last laugh on him by putting him acting like an ass on live tv.

I've been staring at that for an extended period of time... The figure you have drawn is infuriatingly abstract. Is it a slanted-mouth face with angry eyebrows or is it a bird with a slanted cranium or a flatfish from the top without sides What is it?!!!

[–]SirRosie 1 point2 points ago

I wouldn't personally wear a white dress shirt and black dress pants by choice. Been forced to enough times.

[–]bigsol81 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I actually wear a tie at work even though I don't have to!

They require us to wear button-up shirts four days a week, and I somehow feel naked wearing such a shirt buttoned up if I'm not wearing a tie.

I can walk around all day with a button-up overshirt that's unbuttoned on top of a t-shirt, but the second you make me button it up I feel like I need to wear a tie with it.

[–]SirRosie 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ties are sick. I don't blame you. Not a fan of white shirt though. I need color in my life.

[–]bigsol81 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I rarely wear a white shirt (the only one I have is five years old and doesn't fit anymore).

I generally like darker color shirts, dark blue, black, grey, combined with light color ties. I also tend to prefer solid color or striped ties over those with pictures or fancy designs on them.

Recently bought some 100% polyester ties, too. Not as prestigious as silk, but being able to toss them in the wash if they get dirty is nice.

I've been watching mythbusters for years and this was the first episode to break my heart. I actually believed those guys were actually running on water

[–]fishingcat 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The disappointment was hopefully made up for by the spinning ice bullet. I did not expect that.

[–]isthatwhatshesaid 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Agreed. The whole time I was watching that episode I kept on saying that its bullshit and it's never going to happen. Well I kept on watching and my jaw just hit the floor.

[–]bigsol81 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Somehow I knew it was possible, but I still didn't believe it was something you could intentionally catch on camera.

[–]fishingcat 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What suprised me the most was that they were able to repeat it. I guessed that it was possible in theory but had no idea that it was a normal result.

[–]bigsol81 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, one of those "one in a million" things, except it turns out that in the right circumstances it's easily repeatable.

[–]bigsol81 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ouch, really?

The amount of upwards force needed to counteract not only your weight but also to counteract the water's fluid dynamics would be far in excess of what a human's foot could realistically produce. The human foot has neither the surface area nor the downwards force to allow for running across water.

[–]blacksunrising 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I wanted to believe haha

[–]bigsol81 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Admittedly, it would be cool. I had a dream once that I could run across the water at the swimming pool at my high school.

[–]Mackinstyle 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Have they ever talked about (on or off the show) how much of the work they actually do? Is there a whole behind-the-scenes team or do the 5 hosts do most of the work (save for the stuff they bring weapons, explosives experts, etc. in for) ?

[–]2Deluxe 33 points34 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They tend to actively point out when they're getting help from the crew or more people so I'm guessing most of it is done by the hosts.

[–]TheCodexx 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It helps that the hosts have technical knowledge and know what they're doing. Not like other shows where they just present stuff. Thus they only need the rest of the crew when they really need some extra people. Otherwise they can do it on their own without relying on others. The only time they really have a massive crew is when they need to get a large rig set-up in a hurry.

[–]AllCutUpOn 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I would bet for the older shows they probably did most of the work themselves. Their budget seemed to be pretty low since I recall them freaking out about how much the helium would cost for the weather balloon lawn chair. Now I bet they are substantially better funded and on top of that they could probably snap their fingers and assemble a team of interns eager to do their bidding for next to nothing.

[–]TheRiddler75 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Last I knew Discovery renewed all of the hosts' contracts for the next 8 years. So their budget must be reasonable.

The rest is probably interns who are thrilled just to be there.

I just started going through all the seasons because I know I have missed episodes here and there. It is weird watching the first season where they are trying to look for the cheapest toilet to blow up, and the cheapest drug test to use for the poppy seed muffin episode. Now they blow shit up just for fun.

[–]bigsol81 0 points1 point ago

Jamie and Adam have both been fabricating things for most of their lives. Grant is an electrical engineer, Kari is an artist and fabricator, and Tory has been a model builder and painter since he was a teenager.

All five of them have a considerable amount of professional experience, and they generally only ask for help when they simply can't do the job efficiently themselves. Adam in particular loves to build things, and even used to build his own toys as a kid.

[–]arrjayjee 8 points9 points ago
