Okay, we obviously need to clear things up here Hivemind. ಠ_ಠ

Nintendo:

  • New Console to catch up graphically with this gen of consoles

  • New controller with a touchscreen, cameras, basically a big DS with one screen. It looks good, but i'm a little worried about the price per controller and the battery life.

  • Remake of Old games, Hardcore games coming back to Nintendo

Personally, I can't imagine playing a game like Battlefield 3 on a controller like that, but I'll hold my tongue till I play it.

Sony:

  • New handheld machine, PS Vita, features amazing mobile graphics, again the touchscreen on front and back.

  • Sequels to Exclusive series, lots of original stuff.

  • More games featuring Move support, not bad.

Again, the PSV is the biggest news, the graphics and the touchscreen are the main highlights, and the price is solid in comparison to the 3DS.

Microsoft:

  • Lots of new games, since they have no hardware to show off, they played a software show.

  • Halo 4, 5, 6 is probably the biggest news, oh and Halo CE remake.

  • Kinect Integration to Hardcore games, in a nice and non-invasive manner.

  • Kinect-featured games, mainly targeted to the kids, family and party types.

  • Full Kinect integration coming to the Xbox UI, Youtube, Bing Search, and a bunch of other Kinect specific stuff for Xbox features (Scanned Avatars, Finger-Tracking for drawing stuff, and other free downloadable time fillers)

Personally, one thing I'm happy about is that MS didn't force hardcore games to completely become Kinect games. Also, I'm looking forward to Kinect integration on the Xbox, finally the Kinect can leave it's ghetto menu.

In the end, I'm going to wait for more info on the PSV and Wii U, they look like good gaming machines but I need to know more. The major thing really scaring me right now is the Wii U controller, it's a pandora's box. It looks like a lot of fun, but i'm worried about two things, cost, and battery life.

Good work all around, it was a refreshing E3.

You hit the point on the Kinect; all the hardc0re gamerz are bitching, but what you said rings true. I especially liked things like Forza 4 -- you play with the controller/wheel, but you can use Kinect for head tracking to look around as you drive, totally cool.

Microsoft's biggest fuckup was that they obviously scripted and choreographed every second of their show, with rehearsals. It was so insincere it was painful to watch. Even if the other guys did it too, it wasn't starkly obvious. Nintendo definitely didn't look like it had full scripts prepared - just lecture notes.

[–]Bwardrop 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The demos with kids repeating scripted "that's so cool" or "good one" were painful to watch and did more to hurt MS than help.

[–]asurroca 50 points51 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Pretty unbiased tl;dr of E3, actually. This should be at the top.

Since E3 2010 was all about Kinect, I can't imagine that anyone would have expected Microsoft to announce anything but new games. Sony's PSVita impressed me, but the rest of their showing was about the same as Microsoft's, just new game announcements. Then, there's Nintendo. After the Wii, there is no way they're scamming me out of my gaming dollars this time around. The Wii has easily been the worst, least-used video game console I've ever purchased (this coming from someone who's had every previous Nintendo console). And now, they announce the WiiU, with specs the Wii should've had in the first place, and essentially a tablet as a controller? Fuck Nintendo. They lose at E3.

[–]ScienceGoneWrong 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

with specs the Wii should've had in the first place

I expect the WiiU to be significantly more powerful than both the 360 and the PS3. At least that would be the smart thing to do, because it would make Nintendo the market leader on graphics and performance for at least a couple of years.

and essentially a tablet as a controller

It doesn't look at all ergonomic, I'll give you that, but it does have some interesting possibilities, like moving some of the HUD elements from the TV to your hand.

I was no fan of the Wii, but the WiiU looks like a big step backwards towards more traditional consoles, and I see a lot more potential with the sceen-on-controller gimmick than I ever did with the motion-sensor gimmick.

[–]wagedomain 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I completely agree. I have all three major consoles, and I have no interest at this point in getting a WiiU. Coincidentally, my PS3 has essentially just become a Blu-Ray player. Microsoft has my attention.

[–]SPOSpartan104 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thank you for saying this. I really didn't see MS's presentation as that bad. I enjoyed it.

[–]Pxtl 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's sounding more and more like the touchpad will be one-and-only-one per console on the Wii U, so the cost of the Wii U controller could be a non-issue since you'll be using Wiimotes for local multiplayer.

And after playing FPS games on the DS, I'm excited to see hardcore gaming on a console with a touchpad instead of the darned joysticks.

If Sony pushes the backpads on the PSP and the Move on the PS3 for pointing-device driven FPS games, and Nintendo has their unified touchscreen interface across both platforms, I could see gamedevs moving away from joystick-driven aiming in FPS games. That could be mean a return to PC-style FPS gameplay.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Pretty well-done, just didn't like this comment:

New Console to catch up graphically with this gen of consoles

Isn't it unfair to call something catch up when we don't exactly know anything about it? I can understand them catching up to HD graphics, but this comment assumes that they're now catching up to the current gen, when some people are saying it's well beyond that.

[–]madcreator 3 points4 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think that a controller with touchscreen will be more important than people might think. As a developer I've always been intrigued by the fact that it's nearly impossible to allow a lot of multi-player board and card games to be played on a system using only one screen. The problem is that you need to display each player's hole cards or private information, yet the only display is one which every player can see. For instance, with poker, each player has their own cards, yet the entire game rests on the fact that no other players know what each other's cards are. This can't be done when using a single TV or monitor. If you aren't convinced, think of your favorite 3-4 board/card games and imagine how much fun they would be if everything was displayed on one screen for all the players to see.

I've been hoping for years for a controller that is able to show personalized graphics, and with the current progress of touchscreen technology it seems like there's finally a perfect way to do this. I'm expecting this new controller to open up a whole new genre of strategic multi-player games that have never before been possible. Reproducing our favorite strategic board and card games will finally be possible, but I'd love to see what other types of creative games designers are able to come up with now that secrecy between players is finally possible.

It baffles me that people can look at Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy and call them the same game. Or at Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess, or Kirby 64 and Epic Yarn. Nintendo is constantly adding new gameplay mechanics to its core franchises; that's why I'm still not tired of them after 25 years.

It's fine if you're not into Nintendo's franchises, just like it's fine that I'm not really into all the urban warfare simulators that seem to be selling so well these days. But Nintendo isn't exactly churning out stale rehashes. Just look at how every new Mario platformer is rumored to be "the spiritual successor to Mario 64" and then turns out to be something very different.

I honestly am getting sick of Nintendo's games. The nostalgia factor doesn't cut it anymore for me. It's like the only thing keeping people waiting for more is that they can't cut it loose. Like crack, but cheaper.

As far as I can tell, each Nintendo franchise represents a genre. Mario=basic platformer/lead member, Zelda=exploration, F-Zero=racing, and so on.

None of their IPs really play the same, even if they do have similar mechanics. Compare Fire Emblem to Advanced Wars. They both have turn based strategy, but FE has a much larger consequence for a unit dieing than in AW. Units in FE level up, gain promotions, and have unique dialog and personality through support conversations. In AW, no units are truly unique. They can literally be replaced in a couple of turns.

I think you'll see a new IP when they start to make another genre.

Would like to see more Wario Land. Just picked up Wario Land 3 for a little bit, great, challenging game where you can't really lose. The frustration is all in the tediousness of repeating a task once you've failed it. GREAT concept, needs to be revisited.

[–]CedarMadness 2 points3 points ago

The third to last (I think) is the toughest one. You have to do a GP race on a track with mines, lava, narrow no walls sections, and Black Shadow and Blood Falcon are programmed to always take first and second. They seem to have unlimited boost if you are ahead of them. The only way I won is by hitting a mine on the last lap which propelled me across the finish at an extreme speed (with about 1% hull remaining).

[–]DeltaBurnt 21 points22 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I whole-heartedly agree with this statement. It's the same reason why Square Enix can make so many Final Fantasys. They're all completely different games, Square just doesn't like to get rid of their flagship name (or chocobos and other "memes" that have developed through the series).

To add to your point Mario Tennis and Paper Mario are both great games that I really enjoy and the fact that they both have Mario and co. doesn't make them the same game/rehashes.

[–]BradJLamb 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

With games like Paper Mario it does mean that it becomes limited in story and characters, so there is a downside. This doesn't mean they can't make a great story with great characters, but they are still limited. However with games like Mario Tennis there is no real story to speak of, so I think it's entirely an upside to play with characters we are at least already familiar with. We already have an idea of their personalities and what they do, and we might already have a favorite. I'd rather play with them than some new character just in a tennis game.

[–]LastEmperor 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, you jut hit the nail on the head. Zelda games are also really good examples of this. Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask are completely different from the feel or Wind Waker. And Wind Waker is completely different from the feel of Twilight Princess. And that's just the 3D games, and compare them to 2D classics like Link to the Past.

Mario is the same thing as well. Mario 64 is different from Sunshine which is different from Galaxy. And again, totally different from its 2D predecessor (and some sequels) as well.

The thing is, Nintendo wouldn't be able to survive without innovating gameplay because their games often are weak on story. And they really do succeed in that.

That's not the point. Paper Mario would've still been just as good had they come up with a new fucking character to put in it.

People bitch and moan that we're coming up on like the 7th Halo game while salivating over the millionth iteration of Mario, Luigi, or Smash Bros.

[–]CuddleCorn 45 points46 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So why bother with a new one if it would be just as good? Nintendo's franchises are a brand. Though it has meant less in recent years, the "Nintendo Seal of Quality" was a sign you knew what you were buying.

Coke could be like "Hey guys, people are always buying coke. It's getting old. Let's make the same cola but we'll sell it as a different name". Though the product would be the same core content, with shiny new packaging, it would be a horrible idea. (Especially as coke tends to win brand known taste tests against pepsi while losing blind ones)

Halo on the other hand, was very clearly a set story. It had a beginning, middle, and end. People are bitching about Halo 4 because the original developer is gone, having completed their vision for the franchise, and microsoft is reviving Master Chief and pretty much has little ground to stand on as to why they plan on adding extra shit to something that had been satisfyingly completed. Mario on the other hand, well, doesn't have that closure or continuity to ruin.

[–]ricodued 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Some good points.

I guess I just see Nintendo games to be sort of one cohesive unit rather than split into Mario, Zelda, etc. When I play a Nintendo game, even if it's Paper Fagballs and we have no idea who fagballs is, I have a certain expectation as far as gameplay goes. Mario isn't what makes those games good, it's Nintendo.

I just feel like they're holding themselves back by going on a "Hey, remember this guy? He was in a good game, so this one must be too!" model as opposed to "Hey, it's us, Nintendo. You can trust us with this new character." Relying on a familiar face to sell games that they figure might not otherwise stand on their own is cheap and I think Nintendo just needs to let their ideas stand on their own once in a while like they did with the Wii. "Here's some new shit, and we think you'll like it!" It's not the end of the day when we have a first-party game that bombs because it tried to innovate.

[–]Cyborg771 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Need I point out that there was only one mention of a first party title being developed for the Wii U compared to like a dozen or so third party titles. Seems like they're doing what you want.

[–]rarisgod 40 points41 points ago

This. I enjoy replaying familiar characters with new ideas in gameplay. CoD on the other hand, is an unfamiliar character in the same environment - shooting. I like shooting things as much as the next guy, but it gets old real fast.

Don't forget that while it's nostalgic for long-time gamers, there is a whole new generation of people who have yet to experience those games. For those who are young and coming of age, these experiences are fresh and remain new and innovative.

Just because you call them the same game does not in fact make them the same game. Yes, I would like Nintendo to come out with new IPs, but there is no reason for them to scrap the old ones.

[–]CaptSpify_is_Awesome 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You are correct, however, it's cheaper and easier to sell a known working story/world/character than to create a new one. Especially if the audience is too young to realize you are re-hashing.

Have to disagree with you, boss. Every game introduces some new mechanic. Some work, some don't, but they try to introduce new gameplay mechanics each time.

That's more than I can say for Halo or GoW. Run, crouch, shoot.

Zelda, Mario, Metroid, etc. may have the same character running around, but there are always new and many times interesting puzzles or situations to solve. Most shooters they just increase the number of guys to kill or which path you run through.

The skins on the models may be getting old, but they're still trying new things with gameplay.

[–]Probopass 38 points39 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You're right. I'm really getting sick of Nintendo doing this. I'm going to stick with Sony and Microsoft's exclusives that they aren't rehashing at all. Halo 4 and Final Fantasy 13 or, wait! The fourth Assassin's Creed maybe? More Modern Warfare?

I don't care how rehashed a game is, if it's executed and designed well I'll play it. New franchises are great and all, but if it's a good game, who the fuck cares?

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I get that you are poking fun at my comment but let me just go off on a different tangent using your post as a springboard. Why do we have to pick sides? It doesn't matter if Nintendo, Sony, or Microsoft or whatever other company compete with each other; gamers shouldn't fight about who's better. We want them all to be good because in the end, it's the gamers who benefit by playing the games.

Sorry about that Probopass.

[–]thescribblery 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The reason we have to pick sides: Time and money. Every console is a sizable investment of both that opens up only a selections of gaming choices. Some households might buy more than one current-gen console, but I think that's not as common as households with ONLY one - and I honestly don't know anyone that has all three. Everyone wants to feel that their purchasing decision was sound, so they have reason to get attached to a particular company.

Now, I agree that it's best for everyone if all the companies are producing quality titles, because that sets a high standard for all three to continue to meet - but that doesn't mean you don't want your console to be the BEST. Otherwise, you either have to satisfy yourself with your second-rated console, or make a new investment into another console (buying console, buying accessories, buying games, finding game time...).

That said, I love all the big companies. Except Playstation. I don't own a PS3, anyway.

[–]OpinionGenerator 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'd argue that the kinds of games popularized on the 360 and PS3 are more played out than any of Nintendo's franchises simply due to the sheer number of developers making the same variety of games.

[–]erikool 104 points105 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Downvote all you want, but I just want to know why Microsoft has gotten their ass kicked this E3. I've watched all three conferences and have been scanning gamespot, G4TV, GameTrailers' floor cameras and I'm not sure why everyone is saying Nintendo and Sony kicked ass. Nintendo I understand because they have a shiny new piece of plastic, but why Sony?

[–][deleted] 93 points94 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

sony didn't do anything revolutionary, they just did the normal stuff really well. they introduced some cool games. they introduced a cool device and priced it right. what's not to love? they weren't trying to push any new bullshit out, just a whole lot of "you guys like to play games? here, we can help you with that".

My brother and I had our own method. You caught the other sneaking a look at your screen, you have permission to hit him.

It only lead to mutual respect and the occasional fight.

[–]TheCid 55 points56 points ago

Or you could just accept it as part of strategy. The best ever was catching someone doing so much screen watching he missed something on his own screen.

For the record: the Super Mario Kart instruction manual actually condoned screen-watching and gave tips on how to use the level's colors to do it more effectively.

Might not be a popular opinion but does anyone else feel like Microsoft is raping Halo for each cent? Personally, it is not my kind of game in terms of genrem story and gameplay ( due to non-cover based mostly) but I don't really think it is worth the 3 (?) extra announced games...

6 Games is a little excessive, especially branching into RTS and others, I can't think of the last time a company did that in such a short time, FF maybe being a huge exception considering the number of them.
