Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Am I less of a man if I covered my eyes in case of a screaming witch the first time through?

[–]bigsol81 205 points206 points ago*

I, too, was fearful that an animated GIF would somehow create sound.

It is pretty cool, though. It works by overloading your receptors with the colors of the first image much like staring at the sun overloads your eyes and blinds you (you are staring at a bright LCD after all)

When the colors are removed what happens is the receptors can only now see the spectrum that is left having removed the previous color.

Your brain then overlays this into the current picture until the receptors calm down and cease to function in a crazy overloaded way.

Agreed, the problem for me was that I fell for it around five times in a short period. After that I just avoid anything that has the slightest hint of being something like that.

Same, I was very wary. I don't trust "hey focus riiiightt here for like 30 seconds" things anymore. Damn scary witch ruining cool optical illusions for everyone.

I powered down my computer, pulled the plugs from the wall outlets, snipped the wires, put a black cloth over the monitor and went out back for the big sledgehammer.... because you can never be too careful about these Animated GIF's.

HTTP handlers can make a .gif url serve a .exe file. It doesn't fool your computer, just saying you can't necessarily trust URLs.

The internet is a battlefield, I've seen it all. Scary mazes, Rick Rolls, spam, lolcats, viruses even the blue waffle. Some people ask why we do it and I tell them "We do it for the lulz".

[–]GalacticNexus 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm proud to say I've yet to expose myself to this "blue waffle", though my mind has conjured up an image that's bad enough as it is from people's descriptions of the horror when they first saw it.

[–]unrealious 2 points3 points ago

Truthfully what I do with GIF's is turn my head to the side, just in case.

My peripherals let me know when the image changes and I can steal a glance in a moment of my own choosing, while braced for the worst.

I continued staring at the dot, knowing full well that it could be a "screamer" .gif without the sound. I have no clue as to why I was so trusting, but it paid off.

I used to be really paranoid of every semi-suspicious YouTube video a couple years back when I was still 13 or so. I would mute the volume, pause the video, and skip to the end..

Actually saved me a couple times.

Then I made my own, I was a little shit, lol.

back around 2003, i had a friend who told everyone that he was colorblind. everyone knows that i'm a curious fellow, so when i asked him to do this color blindness test, he humored me and thought nothing of it. my speakers were up quite loud, and he studied the final puzzle quite intently...

[–]avidbrandy 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's exactly what I did. This is cool though. Anybody else do it several times?

If you let it be color and then look at a different part of the picture it all goes black and white, but then look back at the dot, it goes color again.

I had too much fun playing with this.

[–]RichardPeterJohnson 4 points5 points ago*

Yes.

gifs can't hurt you.

Edit to add: Don't let some asswipe run your life. Look fearlessly at things that might be cool. If an occasional shock gif gets through, that's a small price to pay for freedom.

it's fun! You want to try some other things?

Spin your ankle in a circle in one direction, then take your finger and move you hand in a circle going the other way. Many times this will cause your foot to stop and turn the direction your hand is going.

Put both of your hands in front of you. Make one do a 'thumbs up' and the other just point with your index finger. Then quickly switch them (i.e. make the hand that was just pointing now just have its thumb up). This can be confusing and difficult at first.

Not quite related but you can try to make your self gleek but pushing your tongue towards your front teeth on the roof of your mouth and jutting your bottom jaw outward at the same time.

There are many cool 'tricks' to doing all sorts of things, however I feel like I am forgetting another cool bar trick

Stand in a doorway with your arms to your side. Now try to raise your arms, keeping them straight at the elbow, pressing the top of your hand against the doorframe.

Exert as much force as you can, and then when your arms feel exhausted relax them and step out of the doorway. Your arms will raise by themselves.

[–]readyfuels 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When I was little, I had a book that said to do this with the sides of the doorframe. My arms were too long. Now, I see this reappear... and i'm too short to do it with the top of the doorframe. :(

Interestingly, the ankle/hand spinning is only a problem if you use the foot and hand on the same side. If you use your left foot and right hand (or vice versa) there's no problem.

If you hold an egg in the palm of your hand and very slowly close your fingers around it, you can squeeze it as hard as you like and it won't break! This is because the pressure equalizes as you squeeze.

Go and try it! Impress your friends!

Explanation

[–]uzusan 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was taught a slightly different way of multiply numbers in my head that might be useful to people rather than the whole africa thing it mentions there.

Using 15x13 as the example:

first you get rid of the 10s in the second number by adding 0 to the first number, and multiplying by the amount of 10's giving you 150, remember this number. That leaves you with just 15 x 3, giving 45. Add the numbers giving, 150 + 45 = 195.

Another example:

14 x 28

=(280) + (14x8)

=(280) + (112)

=392.

The first step there, you are mentally splitting it into (14 x 20) + (14 x 8). The 14 x 20 is easy, add a 0 to the 14, then double it. (giving first 140, then 280). I actually ended up splitting out the 14 x 8 in my head as well to (8 x 10) + (8 x 4) which is (80) + (32) giving 112.

You can also add the 80 to the 280 before doing the last 8x4. This works better if there are multiple splits you are doing and you can keep a running total, so you end up with this (i've expanded each step, to try and make it a bit more obvious):

14 x 28

= (14 x 20) + (14 x 8)

= (280) + (14 x 8)

= (280) + (10 x 8) + (4 x 8)

= (280) + (80) + (4 x 8)

= (360) + (4 x 8)

= (360) + (32)

= 392.

The more you do it the quicker it becomes, i've been using this for years to work out numbers in my head quickly. Using this method all you are ever doing is single digit multiplication and keeping track of maybe 3 or 4 numbers at a time, depending on the numbers.

It works for higher numbers as well, but once you get over 100 it can get a bit tricky keeping track of everything. At that point, it becomes a task to keep everything straight and any speed advantage you get from not writing things down / getting a calculator is lost and it becomes a parlour trick.

Never saw it before But I knew how our eyes work so I sorta expected it

Our eyes have a central foveal vision where the light falls onto a space about a mm sq. In this area there is a very large % of cone photoreceptors which pick up the colour in items (and focus/sharpness) and the further away you get from the CFV you get more Rods receptors which pick up light, In the dark you use these Rods to pick out detail while the cone receptors mainly sit inactive.

[–]fatmallards 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is just the opponent process theory right?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This phenomenon is called afterimage. In this example it is negative afterimage. The color stays for a moment as your rods and cones adjust see: Wiki

My color theory professor told our class that afterimage is part of why nurses / MDs choose certain colors for scrubs because other colors seem to blend in too much following hours of work.

[–]windsostrange 1 point2 points ago

Yup. This is how they take old black and white pictures/movies and restore them as colored

[–]frickendevil 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, to colorize a black and white movie, they use color masks as overlays on the original black and white.

The way this illusion works is that the negative of the image saturates the opposite color receptors in your eyes and when it swaps to black and white, the white of your monitor (which is red + green + blue, not actual white light) triggers only the original colors until your eye can reset all the receptors.

If you're looking for tons more illusions like this: http://www.moillusions.com/

[–]unintentions 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When I looked at it the 2nd time, I made sure to look at the entire thing, not just the dot, and didn't focus on it until the very last second when the progress bar was running out..It seemed to change to color for a fraction of a second and then directly to black & white...Seems like a created illusion to me rather than a real one. Am I seeing this wrong???

[–]frickendevil 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You are supposed to focus on the dot, here is what is happening;

  • Your eyes have cones and rods, (cones see colours, rods see black and white, or the other way around, that part isn't important). The way they see colour is by a protein that changes its shape when exposed to the right frequency of light. The reverse process is not instantaneous.
  • The image is first in the negatives of the original, ie the opposite colour of what it is supposed to be. It then changes to black and white.
  • When the change happens, what was once a colour now changes to black and white, a mixture of "no colour" and "all colours together" respectively. The change happens, and all the "opposite" colours receptors are already oversaturated, and can't see the opposite colour at all. All that is left is the original colour.
  • If you are moving your eyes around, even slightly, it can cause the "resetting" to happen faster, or the receptors won't get saturated. This means when it swaps to black and white, you won't have as much of an effect.

[–]Reidmcc 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think so. I was able to get the color illusion to maintain for about 15 seconds by not focusing my eyes after it switched. If it were a created illusion it would be the same length of colored time for each viewing.

what have you done to me, internet!?!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If I keep staring the color stays there until I move my eyes. After repeating the loop a few times I can now get the color to come back to the b&w version by staring at the dot again.

Goes to show the caching going on in the brain. Wonder how you control F5 it... lol

[–]codyjake 0 points1 point ago

[–]naturalcauzes 0 points1 point ago

So...I tried a couple of things. I noticed that no matter what I do, the screen flashes a color depiction for a fraction of a second if not a full second, then goes to black and white. No dot-staring necessary.

[–]Zeraphil 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What's also awesome is that if the gif was longer, and you could keep your vision centered on the dot, you would actually "see" the image's "colors" degrade over time.

[–]drusteeby 0 points1 point ago

I actually read about this in my psychology class textbook. When you look at anything that is a color like the dark and light blue in this .gif, your eyes do a sort of photo-negative thing and when you look away, the imprint stays for a few seconds as the opposite color. The book had a similar example using the U.S. flag.

Some interesting results when you invert the colors too. Try inverting the colors just when it turns to black and white as well.
