If you ever grab a frog by the "hips" and hold their legs outstretched in your hand, you will notice they won't struggle too much. They can't bend their legs, they can't kick away. The snake probably struck quick enough to get a leg, maybe both legs, as they were being outstretched. The snake is also small enough that it didn't allow enough room in its throat for the frog to move its legs. The snake was lucky, but frogs are wily.

My guess is that the frog was watching the cricket waiting to pounce. When he saw a movement on the right side of his visual field he assumed it was a movement made by the cricket and went to chomp.

You could breed your own toad warriors from infancy in a toad nursery, and then send them into battle to combat other warrior toads.... or hamsters. Battletoads vs. Battlehamsters. The battlehamsters would definitely need long, fighting sticks. Battletoads would need to wear a saddle occasionally, of course.

White's Tree Frogs or Dumpys are pretty common pet frogs, I had one for a couple years, they eat like this, reckless abandon, diving mouth first for anything moving of roughly the same size.

No teeth, they'll go for fingers but usually figure it out.

One day I caught a pacific tree frog, these little buggers are about the size of a postage stamp (US) and sing beautifully in the summer evenings out here in California.

Since dumpys are supposed to be non-aggressive and can be kept with other species, I figured, Cool! I just got another frog. So I put him in the tank with Budworth.

He kept to himself, up in the top corners of the aquarium, Budworth would sit on the bottom of the tank staring at him, I bought him some special food but couldn't get him to eat, I thought maybe he was intimidated by Budworth so I put him in another container overnight with his food.

No dice.

The second container wasn't heated as well as the main tank, so he was moving a little slow the next morning. I decided to release him back into the wild, but thought, "Hey, I should let him warm back up a bit."

So I put him back in with Budworth, as soon as I turned my back on the tank I heard the "THUMP" sound Budworth would make when he dove for crickets.

I flipped around and to my horror all I saw was a flipper and part of the hind leg of the tree frog, hanging out of Budworth's mouth.

I jumped to the tank, shouting at my frog "Budworth, NO!", thinking maybe I could pull the other frog out of the jaws of death.

That's when my brain caught up with my body and I realized other frog was gone, and Budworth wouldn't need any crickets for a few days.

Moral of the story, "Food sized pals make lousy play-dates for a pet"

When I lived down south a few years ago, tons of bugs would be attracted to our porch light. Bugs attract toads. So every night, we'd have a bunch of toads. They'd occasionally attack each other, but one day, a particularly large one did manage to eat a small one. It was pretty awesome.

Edit: I forgot to mention the toads left huge toad turds on our porch too. We thought they were from skunks or cats or something until we finally realized that toads turds are just big.

yes, but the frog eventually learned to climb glass, nosed his lid off, and was promptly devoured in no doubt a spectacularly-filmed anticlimactic scene. "I believe I can fly" was probably playing in his head as he soared, legs akimbo, in slow motion toward the maw of the predatory lizard.

This is why I can't get a companion for my frog. The Austrailian White's Tree Frog will try to eat anything that moves. The female can outgrow males by a couple of inches, so breeding can be tricky when the ladyfrog is constantly trying to gobble up the male.

That reminds me of when I was a kid and we captured three tadpoles from a pond to try to raise up to being frogs. Then one day there were only two... then one day we walked in and one was about halfway through swallowing the other.

I have two of these frogs. They are Dumpy Tree Frogs and more often than not they end up getting a mouthful of tree bark substrate instead of the cricket!
