Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Why not just cross the streams?

[–]herutza 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because it would be gay. Or is it gay only when swords cross? I keep forgetting.

[–]BuckeyeBentley 3 points4 points ago

It's only gay when balls touch.

physics Quiz: As the barge goes over, does the load on the aquaduct structure: Increase, Decrease, Stay the same.

[–]thecommabandit 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Stays the same. By virtue of the barge floating, it must displace a volume of water of equal or greater mass than its own. As it passes over the bridge, it pushes water equalling its own mass off the bridge, meaning that the mass the bridge is supporting is constant. QED.

(I registered just to answer this question and feel smart. I will be so embarrassed if it's wrong.)

You are correct good sir! Here is the evidence.

Sorry brah

[–]thentherewerelimes 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

According to Archimedes' principle, floating objects displace their own weight in water, so when the boat enters, the amount of water displaced weighs the same as the boat.

Stays the same.

[–]Skynne -4 points-3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Both incorrect. It displaces the same volume of water, not the same weight. Dropping a lead ball into water and dropping a clay ball of the same size will displace the same amount of water, but the lead ball will increase the load.

What do I win?

[–]rcxdude 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

it only displaces it's own volume if it's submerged, i.e. the barge sinks. Otherwise, it's in equilibrium, and since the buoyancy is equal to the weight of displaced water, a volume of water equal in weight to the barge must be displaced. You are correct though, in that dropping lead (or anything else which doesn't float) in the channel would increase the load.

[–]thecommabandit 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You've misunderstood Archimedes' principle. The lead and clay balls both displace the same volume of water. The clay ball floats because it weighs less than the volume of water displaced by that spherical volume. The lead ball weighs more than that, so it sinks. Whether an object floats or not depends on whether the volume of water it displaces weighs more or less than the object.

That said, I'm reasonably sure a solid clay ball would sink. I kinda assumed you meant a hollow one.

I just watched the movie Hanna and she hid on a boat going over this. Or at least one just like it, you know, since it's just an aquaduct basically.

This was such a useless post.

But the movie was kinda cool.

Agreed. The movie was certainly worth a watch.

[–]webchimp32 1 point2 points ago

It's called an aqueduct. Or viaduct, can never remember which.

[–]The_Reverend 1 point2 points ago

Because it's big enough to carry a barge

[–]dwaxe -2 points-1 points ago

Aqueduct. Viaducts go over valleys.

[–]queenbrewer 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, viaduct is derived by analogy from aqueduct. The Latin root "aqu" meaning water changed to "via" meaning road. The root "duct" means to lead. (Aced Bioscientific Vocabulary from Greek to Latin fall quarter)

You sir or madam, are a scholar!

[–]webchimp32 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Been doing some checking and the above example can be either.

An aqueduct can be anything from a channel, pipe, canal or bridge and can either be for just transporting water or navigable.

An viaduct is any multi-spanned bridge, not necessarily for transporting water.

It's even cooler than it appears in the photo:

There's a whole canal interchange there.

Pfft, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Briare_aqueduct

Though none of the pictures I can find do it justice (last one on this page is good http://anotherheader.wordpress.com/2010/06/09/the-loire-valley/ but it doesn't really show how long or how beautiful it is).
