In retrospect, Lady Elaine Fairchild was a strikingly complex character for such a simple concept as the Neighborhood of Make-Believe. She wasn't a villain per se, but a meddlesome trickster, and probably the smartest (certainly the most savvy and cynical) person in the entire Make-Believe world.

While every other character was a childlike caricature which could never exist in the real world, Lady Elaine's personality was surprisingly realistic.

You should change your name to PBSlake.

That red nose and stoic eyes, combined with Queen Saturday's horrifying falsetto voiceover, were inspiration for many a nightmare back in the day.

I wasn't all that creeped out as a kid. What really gave me the creeps later was when I found out Fred did all the puppet voices.

I never fell for the land of make believe. It was kind of lame and creepy. Like my 65 year old alcoholic neighbor when I was 8. But Fraggle Rock still gets me going!

TERRIFYING!!!!!!!

I always thought she was a witch.

this fucker on the left creeped me out as well.

[–]frabelle 0 points1 point ago

The puppet itself actually WAS a witch before he repurposed her. Learned that from the book "Mister Rogers Neighborhood: Children, Television, And Fred Rogers," a really fascinating collection of academic essays about the show. (I'm kind of a nerd and would like to write my thesis on him if I ever get to grad school.) I highly recommend the book if you're interested!

God dammit I still can't look at Lady Elaine!

Incidentally, when my brother and I were really little, we thought the Beatles Song 'Penny Lane' was actually 'Lady Elaine'. A terrifying prospect for sure.

Lady Elaine is super-creepy, but I always found that singing trash heap from Fraggle Rock to be far more terrifying.

The only reason that I didn't like watching this show as a kid. I had to turn the damn channel when they went to Puppet Land.

Anyone remember "Making Contact"? In Germany the movie was just named "Joey". The Puppet freaked me out as a kid. I still don't like them.

Punch and Judy was always the worst for me.

There's this hilarious book called "The Evil Empire" about all the ways in which "England ruined the world." (I actually like England, but certain things about it frustrate me, so I gleefully dipped into it at a bookstore once.) One of the reasons given is "They Created The First Very Stupid and Very Violent Puppet Show for Children." In the explanation, the guy goes on and on about how "hundreds of years before tykes gathered 'round a glowing box to watch Tom and Jerry dismember each other, a hook-nosed gentleman named Punch regularly beat the crap out of his innocent companion, Judy." That made me laugh so much.

I don't know. shrug It is just such a British thing... all of that sadness and anger showing through the supposed humor like a pentimento. So much of their humor revolves around that very juxtaposition.

You should check out Riddley Walker, a post-apocalyptic book set in England that's effectively been returned to the Stone Age. The Punch and Judy show survives but has become MUCH more darker.

I could not agree more heartily with you, especially as you are the sausage king of Chicago.

Now it can be told! It always amazed me that someone who seemed to have such insight into a child's perspective could ever think that these fricking puppets would do anything but freak them out.

Gooey Gus from the show Ghost Writer on PBS. He was some doll that became sentient and evil, and encased people in chewing gum. He scared the ever loving shit outta me.

[–]Baeker 3 points4 points ago

Nah, that's Lady Elaine Fairchilde. She's creepy but she's still a neighbor. I think it was a good lesson for kids that just because someone is creepy and kinda ugly, doesn't necessarily make them bad.
