Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Seeing images like this reminds me why I can never complain about my position in life.

[–]mcf 118 points119 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

but if nobody complained we'd all be in positions like this

Keep in mind, the Arab Spring was started by a single fruit vendor. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohamed_Bouazizi)

Why is that? He is a business man enjoying his right to trade goods.

He answers to nobody and is a part of a large civilization's ecosystem.

Not sad enough?

Luckily, Adobe Photoshop has a new feature called Content Aware Fill that fixes problems like this.

Now there's even less hope for this man.

Thanks, Photoshop!

I agree. I mean I know it's a sad image in general but for some reason this actually kinda bothers me.

[–]Torrenthurder 20 points21 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

His expression looking down the alley, how he's holding his hands. He's waiting. He could be anybody, so you can empathize with this. The contrast from the rest of the picture seems heavy making the oranges almost obtuse, and yet they symbolize his hope. The entire picture seems almost to represent life, how we wait from moment to moment, hoping for something better just around the corner and worrying just the same.
This is why it bothers you and me.

[–]unbearable_lightness 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What bothers me personally is the look of acceptance in his face of what life has dealt him with. Learned helpessness: the perceived absence of control over the outcome of a situation.

He will probably only get one or two sales that day, how much will he earn? Pennies? Yet he wakes up every day and waits for maybe one day he can move up the chain and be happy, but that day might never come. I really want to help this man, but I can't.

[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points ago

Why it is sad? He is better off than thousands slowly dying in their cubicles growing fat for their heart attack.

What a lot of people do nowadays: find a cool pic/webcomic, upload to imgur. A lot of people don't add watermarks/websites to their pictures, so the author doesn't get clicks on his website. It's a douchebag move.

[–]snottlebocket 53 points54 points ago

I find it interesting that everyone automatically pities the guy.

The other point of view would be that we're seeing an entrepreneur making the most of things in a hard environment. He's clean shaven, well groomed, dressed warmly and has product to sell.

However bad his situation, this is a man helping himself and that's something to respect not pity.

[–]AuntieSocial 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Luckily, he has this option. If he were in America, he'd have to cough up a few hundred dollars for a local business license, build or buy a stall that met local food health and safety laws, pay for the inspection to prove it and have a permit to sell food on the street. All that before he could set out a single fruit. (Which probably wouldn't sell anyway, since it's blemished.)

Bootstrapping's a lot easier when you don't have to buy special custom-made, rare-leather bootstraps from a licensed source before you even can start.

Yes, it's Afghanistan. The photographer, Steve McCurry, is famous for his 1980's National Geographic cover photo of an Afghan refugee girl. Here is OP's photo, with others by McCurry:

What I like most about this shot is the way his clothes match the background, leaving just his face and the fruit as focal points.

[–]sandrocket 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't think it's real. The photographer desaturated the clothes and most of the background.

[–]Masterbrew 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why the downvotes? The guy is right.

[–]theophiles -2 points-1 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is what the artist (photographer) did, I am relatively certain. Part of what makes it art is the way that the artist plays with light to emphasize some aspects of the portrait and deemphasize others. Other aspects include the framing (which left out the entire universe outside this place and this moment). Still, does the fact that the photograph is adjusted make it any less real or does it just draw our attention to certain areas?

[–]sandrocket -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Documentary photos shouldn't be altered as strong as in this photo, because they are supposed to show a piece of reality.

If it's a piece of art, then I would agree with you and it's ok to "bend" it a little, to make it more interesting.

In this certain photo, the desaturation was a little too strong and too obvious. It just seems unrealistic.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

In some places, AK's are less expensive than a chicken. In "Lord of War" the producers bought real rifles for the scenes because they were cheaper than buying movie replicas.

Something that costs less than a meal for a family, can be used to destroy many families forever.

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

probably AK 47s which are cheap as dirt

[–]GnomeChumpski 0 points1 point ago

Every once in a while I see an image that really resonates with me. Such disparity in the world, so many people barely eking out a living... I sometimes wonder what my life would be like if I'd been born into such circumstances. If I could distill into a single sentence the kind of world I want to live in it would be one where regardless of your when and where you were born into this world you had chance, an equal chance, of making something of yourself. I don't want to live in opulence while others struggle to feed and house themselves from the get-go.

Before I saw this I felt kind of depressed about some small shit in my life. Now I feel exactly the same way because my problems are problems in relation to my own situation and an arab that's selling fruits because he can't find a better job doesn't make me feel bad about caring about problems in relation to my own life.
