Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

If I'm not mistaken, isn't it a monastery, not a castle?

[–]jgrindal 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's a town.

In the sense that it has all the town-like shit, but didn't it start as a monastery?

[–]memoi2001 5 points6 points ago

Started as a pagan retreat to ignore the chrstians, turned into a christian monastery, turned into a small town, turned into one of the last bastions against the saxons, tuned into the last bastion against the invading french (by the bretons)

Seriously, anyone who wants a history lesson should spend a little time in brittany, at least 20 invasions in the mast 500 years and they make most of them into folklore.

They even clain merlin is buried in the forest next to broceliande

Yeah I think you're right. I mean, I know for sure that it's definitely not a castle, but I'm almost positive it started as a monastery.

Now it's pretty much just a tourist trap, but yes, it was a monastery. I don't think it was ever anything else, but I remember it being very fortress-y when I was there, so I could be wrong (and I'm feeling too lazy to google it).

Originally the bridge wasn't there, so it could only be accessed at low tide.

Yeah; what did we say that implied anything about country of origin?

The first time I went to Mont Saint-Michel my mind was blown. It's like this awesome cross between Minas Tirith and Hogwarts.

[–]memoi2001 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Problably the inspiration for minas tirith, tolkein spent a lot of time in cornwall if memory serves, not to far for a couple of days off..

Also in Cornwall, a very similar, although less architecturally spectacular Saint Michael's Mount at Marazion.

You guys know Mont St.Michel is in France, right? (I'm not being snarky, I'm actually just asking, as I think I misinterpreted your comments).

[–]HistoryMonkey 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No we know, but there's a very similar mount in Cornwall and a strong Cornwall-Normandy cultural connection

[–]sweeners44 0 points1 point ago

Ah ok, so that is what you're referring to. I just got confused.

When the tide goes out the surrounding salt flats are used as a parking lot.

This is the same castle from the movie 'mindwalk' right? (suppose I could google it...)

[–]GNU_bie 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Mindwalk was a great movie filmed in this castle. It consists of a conversation between two intellectuals (Dad from Home Alone, and Sam Waterson from Law and Order). Watched it in my intro to philosophy class. Good flick. Great setting for a movie.

Protip for anyone traveling there, be careful where you park.

As you can see at high tide most of the car park is submerged.

It's where King Arthur fought the Giant. Who ate children. While King Arthur also killed children.

Before the construction of the first monastic establishment in the 8th century, the island was called "monte tombe". According to legend, the Archangel Michael appeared to St. Aubert, bishop of Avranches, in 708 and instructed him to build a church on the rocky islet. Aubert repeatedly ignored the angel's instruction, until Michael burned a hole in the bishop's skull with his finger.

If you have the chance to go, really try to see it after dark. The 1000s of tourists disappear and you have the entire thing to yourself. A few Prince of Persia moves and it will stay with you forever!

You can sleep in your car in the car parks just below ;)

When the tide goes out, though, all that water becomes mud. BAM! Bye bye beautiful castle/town/monastery, hello mighty Fortress of Shit-Land.

Also, you can buy swords there.

I loved visiting there (even if much of the town had turned into tourist-traps). The geometry in the abbey made me want to sit and gaze for hours.
