A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

...Is that baby wearing eyeliner?

[–]ObscureSaint 272 points273 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes.

Mothers protect their babies from evil spirits by tracing their babies' eyes in black makeup and adding black decorations to their face. The color black is thought to repel harm from the delicate openings on the face. (source)

The black line will absorb light more readily than the whites of the eyes. Reduces glare and stuff. That's why football players put black streaks of paint under their eyes.

[–]ci5ic 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

so, the eyes are actually lined with black holes... interesting.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

By looking at the child's surreal eyes I would say they are black holes. Anyone who stares into the eyes never comes out.

dust and UV rays are evil spirits... that's something use science types havn't managed to wrap our heads around... people used words to catch the essence of something, often in a more encompassing manner than the list that analysis would concoct.

[–]davey_darling 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Reminds me of the story of the Buddha statue in China that was carved by a monk with the hope that its presence would calm the river making it safer for travelers.

Turns out that when you dump hundreds of tons of rock in a river, it can alter currents enough to calm the flow.

[–]LookAtYouNow 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Isn't it more that people came up with explanations for things that worked rather than a wise 'catching of essence'.

I mean you could say it's more encompassing, but I would say it's just more general and vague.

[–]TheBlackestManAlive 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think in some cases it is both. One person over simplifies it for the lesser people and the lesser people are the ones who exchange that idea. Ancient Egyptians wore mascara to protect their eyes from the sun so it's not too far off that these people would know of this methodology.

[–]bitcloud 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Specificity is a narrow, often incomplete way of conceptualising the real world.

Let me give you an example: There's an old building up the street.

"Don't go in that building, the floor isn't secure". So you go into the building, walk carefully and get splinters.

"Don't go into that building, the floor isn't secure and there are splinter". So you go into the building, walk carefully and wear gloves and you inhale vapours that make you sick.

"Don't go into that building, the floor isn't secure, there are splinters and there are vapours". So you walk carefully, wear gloves, put a handkerchief over your nose. 30 years later you die of asbestos poisoning. Specificity didn't cover it.

"Don't go in that old building, it contains evil spirits". Fair enough.

Specificity is a false sense of security. What the "evil spirits" thing does is CORRECTLY identifies that there's stuff you don't understand about that building, and theres stuff I don't understand either - thus giving you a list is dangerously misleading.

Now if you want another example, look at climate change. We're trying to write a list to cover 100 billion species and the intricate workings of the single most complex and interconnected phenomenon the universe has ever seen. We keep trying to "swallow the spider to catch the fly", but the real solution is to recognise that we DON'T understand it, and that pollution is infact bad juju... :)

if i recall correctly the result was 'it works, if you're wearing a hat.'

[–]anthony955 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It works if you use enough of it, it probably wont work for eyeliner though. For example in the military we don't really paint our faces up to camouflage them, we paint them to reduce glare from the oils in on our skin.

[–]ours 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've heard the purpose of camo was not to hide but to make a person/vehicule look less like a person/vehicule. In the particular case of a person, you break the the face from looking like a face by scrambling the features with paint as the human brain is hard-wired to recognise face-like-patterns really damn well.

[–]anthony955 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The camo we wore does that, it breaks up our silhouette with the background but it's not like we'd be a bunch of floating heads walking through the woods without face camo. The biggest thing is notice someone's face on a sunny day, I don't care what color skin they have you'll notice the sun reflecting from it. Face camo prevents that.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's odd because I live in a state where the sun is blinding and my eyeliner doesn't help one damned bit. Must wear sunglasses all the time.

[–]forlornhope 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My parents participated in the Human Genome Project. My genes, on my mother's side, were traced to the region in Northern India circa 10,000 years ago. Almost a perfect match.

Found that particularly interesting, though, 10,000 years is obviously a very long time. My father's side was almost entirely from Northern Spain (Celt) which was no surprise because most of his family is from France, England and Wales.

[–]doubleUngood 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think what the parent is trying to say is that the influence of "Alexander" injected some sort of genetics into the population that provided these peculiar eye characteristics.

From Dunepedia:

"Eyes of the Ibad" was a term used on Arrakis to describe the effect that the Spice Melange had on the eyes of an individual whose bloodstream had been saturated with the drug due to years of exposure to it. The pigmentation of these eyes was described as blue-within-blue, and was ordinarily associated with the Fremen (they possessed the Eyes of the Ibad from the age of twelve onwards)

The caption is sad:

"TB is the child of poverty - and also its parent and provider" This quote from Archbishop Desmond Tutu encapsulates the link between TB and poverty.

Poverty, malnutrition, sickness go hand in hand. It is in communities such as this where highly infecious diseases, such as Tuberculosis, live and spread. According to research, Tuberculosis contributes to an annual total of 400,000 deaths in children.

Looks like the picture was taken at a TB treatment facility in Islamabad, Pakistan. Here's another picture of the girl:

It looks like she has tuberculosis. She's got blood on her hand and all over her cheeks. It's an impressive, and simultaneously horrible photo.

[–]seanmharcailin 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

She doesn't have blood on her hands. It is henna. in the west we usually only see henna done in intricate patters, but she has a very old fashioned traditional application- her entire palms are smeared with it, then her fingertips and knuckles are as well.

That baby is actually not wearing eyeliner. It is called surma a ceremonial dye I guess you can all it. Typically used in the Middle East, Afghanistan, etc. They say its good for your eyes and stuff like that, my mom did it to me and all of my siblings. Most likely they are Pathans.

[–]Von_Dredd 97 points98 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So, what you're saying is that the baby IS wearing eyeliner?

[–]Loud_Secretary 16 points17 points ago

It contains unrefined lead. Yes, thats the dangerous one.

A dye? Well, that sounds like eyeliner to me, though maybe not sold as that.

Eyes like this were discussed here a while ago.

The dark ring around the iris is indicative of youth and health, fading with age, and is a quality unconsciously sought when evaluating potential mates. Probably it is amplified in rare dark-skinned races with light eyes, making them especially stunning.

So when it appears this strikingly, it resonates on a primal level. Same with the Afghan girl someone posted. Note how the ring faded as she grew older.

[–]KSUNVI 11 points12 points ago

Either that or she's leaning to the side a lot to position the weight of the baby over her hips.

[–]maltwyrm 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I thought about that, maybe it's just poofy clothing?

Another picture of her here (Courtesy of this fellow.)

Another person suggested that the bump on her stomach was actually the baby's legs.

[–]maltwyrm 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

AH! I concur with the Baby's Legs Theory. It does, indeed, appear that her dress is over the baby's knee.

Am I the only one that thinks finding someone beautiful is not always synonymous with finding them sexually attractive?

I find both of those children beautiful, as well, regardless of how old they are.

Yeah, you'll find many like that though, sadly the harsh Afghan climes will get to her in about 10 years time (add to that marriage, kid making, and that cosmetics are an alien concept and BAM - the 'she didn't age well' comments start pouring in).

Of importance here is the magnitude of one's limbal distance.

The limbal ring is the black ring between the iris and the white of the eye.

I remember having this supply teacher in school once, one of the awesome ones that knew he wasn't a proper teacher and just told us weird stories. He used to work in a kids jail and was telling us how he learnt to spot what he called 'shark eye syndrome'. Basically how you can tell someone is going to be a serial killer/rapist from looking at their eyes and how he would go into schools and see kids but not be able to tell the headmaster because he sounded like a madman.

This kid had shark eye syndrome.
