When I was in the 82nd, we'd have a bunch of WW2 vets come around during All American Week (week long event that celebrates all that is Airborne). So my very first Division parade, I was tasked with herding the old timers around the field and just keep them more or less entertained by standing there and looking like a private. One gentleman saw me and said, 'Hey there private, how many jumps do you have?"

I had just arrived to the unit and hadn't been doing too much jumping quite yet, so I answered with an honest 11 jumps. The wrinkled, small man in front of me whistled, obviously impressed, and then proudly stated that he only had three. Sicily, Salerno and Normandy.

I was speechless.

I have nothing but respect for soldiers who serve for their country, but those men in WW2 had balls the size of Jupiter. Hearing that from him must have made you felt them.

It's hard to imagine what those guys did back then. I've read the books, watched the movies, even talked to some of em - but I will (hopefully) never know what that must have felt like...

Back then, those guys were truly fighting for their country... as opposed to the myriad of reasons we fight today. Therefore, you can say they were highly motivated.

Redditors hate to see happy people. If they happen to see a person who uses =D or says Hahaha, their gut instinct is to downvote. They justify this by thinking that the person was not adding to a thoughtful discussion, but then again anyone who imagines that must never read the comments these days.

[–]Sherm 39 points40 points ago

[–]WARFTW 30 points31 points ago

Red Army veteran of WWII. He did a lot. Medals were given out for defensive actions, liberation of towns, courage, valor, heroism, etc. There were also medals given out for anniversaries of defensive actions, victories, etc. So veterans kept accumulating them long after the war (new medals are still being manufactured today and given/sent out to veterans).

[–]thecoffee 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Do you know the logic behind sending out the same award at a regular interval? Is it for PR or something?

[–]fragaria 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

WWII veterans are enormously respected. So when the gov. wants to show they "care", they issue another commemorative medal instead of giving the veterans something they might actually use.

[–]stronimo 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

... and medals are cheap.

[–]fragaria 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly, the government officials have perfected the game - so, for example, each year to commemorate the Victory day, they would organize free concerts, parades, issue official addresses, then for the rest of the year the vets and their problems are effectively forgotten.

[–]MacEnvy 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

then for the rest of the year the vets and their problems are effectively forgotten

UK veterans have it that bad, eh?

[–]fragaria 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I meant the WWII veterans of the former Soviet Union

[–]arronax 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not the same medal, actually. There was, for example, medal for capturing Berlin. Then there was a medal for 20th, or I don't know, 30th anniversary of capturing Berlin. It goes on. Doesn't help veterans much, I guess.

[–]WARFTW 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The Soviet Union had something of a 'cult' develop around the Great Patriotic War. Veterans were eventually allowed to have/create their own organizations and were given benefits by the state. To continually thank that generation they issue new medals on occasion. I'd say it serves two purposes, it recognizes the veterans themselves and justifies today's Russian military/historical background both internally and on the international arena.

That took all about two seconds for me to recall. I have a really shitty memory; I can never remember that sorta stuff. But that one, that's a great line. Hell, it sent shivers down my spine, just as I read it.

Now, I've gotta give you one back — nowhere near as awesome, I admit, and not a one-liner, but I liked it. From the last episode of Game of Thrones:

The veteran on the left is from the Red Army (Soviet Union). Order of the Red Banner can be clearly identified. What country they are in today is harder to say, could be as mentioned Russia or Ukraine, but I'm sure other former Soviet states (there were 15) might have adopted some of the same clothing (striped shirt, for instance).

I'm actually going to guess that this is Russia. If you search google for Ukrainian and Russian airborne images, the Russian airborne beret's have the national colors on the side, White, Blue, and Red, which his beret has. Ukrainian doesn't seem to (and their national colors are Blue and Yellow).

Here is what I found for Ukrainian airborne: http://img826.imageshack.us/img826/8831/x610j.jpg

[–]orange_jooze 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No. Woosh is for when someone takes a joke seriously. WARFTW proposed two options because he wasn't sure which one is right. KRONie just found some more evidence that pointed to one of WARFTW's option as the right one.

NowWhat?

NowWhat is a planet in the Whole Sort of General Mish Mash formerly known as the Hitchhiker's Guide universe. NowWhat can be found in place of planet Earth at an unlikely position along the probability axis, in a parallel universe.

According to the novel Mostly Harmless, "the planet of NowWhat had been named after the opening words of the first settlers to arrive there after struggling across light-years of space to reach the furthest unexplored outreaches of the Galaxy. The main town was called OhWell."

The only export of NowWhat is the NowWhattian boghog skin, which no one in their right minds would want to buy because it's thin and very leaky, and the export trade only manages to survive because of the significant number of people in the Galaxy who are not in their right minds.

Travelers that arrive on NowWhat are greeted by a picture of the president smiling a ghastly smile; the picture was taken after he shot himself, and the missing corner of his face has been drawn in crayon. No one wants to be the president of NowWhat. Everyone there pursues one ambition: to leave.

Arthur Dent arrives on NowWhat in search of Earth. After turning the map upside down and adjusting for different sea levels, he discovers that the shapes of the continents of NowWhat resemble those of the planet Earth. For lack of any other similarity Arthur Dent concludes that it is the right planet but the wrong universe and leaves again.

The sad thing here is that veterans like that old guy are treated like shit by OMON and other low level police officers in public because they are old and have no power.

[–]nonsensepoem 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

because they... have no power

To be fair, that's why they treat everyone like shit.

You are not, and will never be, fighting the last war . . .

The reason soldiers wanted to earn that many medals is because there is a small chance they will block bullets.

Mmyes, mmyes, this one right here, well that's for excellence in the field of tying knots, and this one I got for jovial banter. Oh this was a tough one, awarded for a week of sobriety. This one? Bottlecap. The pointy one is actually just a pretty seashell that I found on a beach in Normandy. Sorry, Norfolk, that is. This one makes me proud, it says "Keep On Trucking", and this one I got for swimming 20 yards under water on a single breath. And the bronze-looking thing here, why that is a penny I found lodged behind a cushion at the sandwich club, mmyes, jolly proud of that one.

[–]generic101 2 points3 points ago

Soviet soldier in WW2... he probably deserved many more. But I still understand what you're getting at.

[–]cawkwielder 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You can earn medals for a lot of ridiculous "achievements." Mostly just being somewhere gets you a ribbon or being a part of a special unit. I'm a firm believer of only being recognized for actually doing something.
