A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

My email a few days ago to Brian May:

In the song Bicycle Race, Freddie mentions "...and I don't like Star Wars". Do you know if this was really the case or if he was just saying that for the sake of the song? I know that wouldn't be typical of him but I just have to ask.

His response: Well, it's a fair question, I guess. But did you ever read 'MobyDick' ? I always remember the first words were "Call me Ishmael". But of course Herman Melville wasn't Ishmael. As with a novel, just because a song is written in the first person doesn't mean it's in any way autobiographical. As I remember, Freddie liked Star Wars a lot, and he actually wasn't very keen on riding his bicycle (if he even had one!) - he preferred being driven in a Rolls Royce! But he created a character in the song, and this character can say what he wants, and he can ride his bicycle where he likes !

Cheers Bri

Pilot- That is amazing that he responded. Not saying anything bad about the guy, but I just assume anyone that is famous enough to end up on my radar is too busy to reply. That is all. If i had a point, I have forgotten it. And I have not idea why this response is all green. Maybe I should lay off the bottle

Yeah, "Bicycle Race" came out in 1978, and the Strategic Defense Initiative, or "Star Wars" program, was started in '84.*

[–]flocker92 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It has been confirmed that Baron Cohen will star as Freddie Mercury of the rock band Queen in an upcoming film about the period in the band's history from 1971 leading up to the Live Aid concert in 1985. It was Baron Cohen himself who contacted screenwriter Peter Morgan with the idea of portraying the flamboyant lead singer.

Being that I'm am only in my twenties, here is my question about Freddie Mercury (and Elton John for that matter): Did people really not know that he was gay? We're they shocked when he came out as gay? C'mon....how did people not know that they were gay?

[–]SwellJoe 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm pretty sure it was not much of a secret. I seem to recall knowing he was gay when I was a kid (I was a kid in the 70s and 80s, and Queen was my first favorite band and the first album I ever owned was a Queen record), at least by the time I was old enough to understand the concept. Likewise Elton John, who was another favorite of mine from very early on. Rob Halford, on the other hand, was in the closet for sure...though it's hard to imagine how people didn't know he was gay, what with the leather and all; but so many metal heads played at that look (probably partly because of the success and influence of Judas Priest) that Halford just blended in. George Michael was also in the closet, at least officially. I remember several girlfriends over the years having a, "I remember where I was the day I learned George Michael was gay." story...to which I, of course, replied, "How could you have not known from the first 'Jitterbug!'"?

But, to put things in perspective, mystery about sexuality was the thing to do back in the 70s. David Bowie, Iggy Pop, The Velvet Underground, and even Mick Jagger, tinkered with androgynous looks and attitudes; rumors ran around about various high profile gay affairs (Bowie and Jagger and Bowie and Freddie being two very frequently told stories; Bowie was a bit of a tramp, if rumors are to be believed). It was a time when everybody was fucking everybody, or at least wanted to present that image to the world. Acting gay was just one more trend, and it didn't necessarily mean they were gay (though Bowie did get around, and swings both ways).

I saw this, it was on the News of the World tour. This was during We Will Rock You. I also remember the entire crowd singing, "Sammy was low, just watching the show, over and over again." The band just stopped playing and listened. One of the best bands I ever saw. it was at Cobo Hall or Joe Louis Arena, Detroit, don't remember the year.

I can confirm that the title of this post does appear to reflect what is in the linked image to fair degree of accuracy. However, the accuracy could have been improved by using the phrase on the shoulders of Darth Vader in place of the phrase on the back of Darth Vader.
