Why do people prefer WWF instead of the Scrabble app?

[–]AndrewAmerican 43 points44 points ago

Nevermind Scrabble, Wordfeud is the best.

Huh, Ill have to look into it. Online?

[–]andbruno 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I Googled just the word "Wordfeud" to see what's different between it and Scrabble/WWF. The second result is "Wordfeud cheat". Goddamnit.

No. This isn't how you post on reddit. Perhaps you should read over the reddiquette. Enjoy.

I thought one reason was that WWF made the game first, and better, than the scrabble App. Of course Scrabble would have tried to prevent WWF from being sold. Then Scrabble finally got around to releasing the game, and it sucked. That's always what I understood: WWF just beat them to the punch.

[–]Annyeongbluth 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It definately helped that WWF had a free version and Scrabble cost $9.99 for a long time. Scrabble only recently released their free version.

[–]robeph 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

how can you make a scrabble game that sucks. It isn't like its super complex.

[–]crash331 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You'd be surprised what talentless and/or hurried developers can do.

[–]Schnevets 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

However, Lexulous (aka Scrabulous) did it before Words With Friends. Also, it's not evil (aka owned by Zynga).

[–]CrankCaller 3 points4 points ago

WWF is cross platform (iOS/Android) and the multiplayer is way better than Scrabble.

[–]Catfish_Man 2 points3 points ago

This has been partly fixed, but at one point the Scrabble app had something like 8 splash screens on launch, and took over a minute to start. It's the worst app I allow on my phone.

[–]zeppelinfromled 1 point2 points ago

Can you use the Scrabble app between iPhone and Android?

[–]mattoly 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes. And via the Facebook app. It's platform independent.

[–]tomorrowboy 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because of rights issues you can only play Scrabble with people in certain countries on FB. ie. I'm in Canada but can't play with my friend in Australia (though I played with her when I lived in the UK).

[–]theresaviking 0 points1 point ago

[–]bittersister 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I didnt know there was an option for board size. I just know that WWF lets people play words that are clearly not real words.

[–]Modug 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Scrabble officials just introduced new words that are definitely not words ie "Grrl". Just saying. http://www.salon.com/entertainment/tv/feature/2011/05/11/scrabble_new_words_facebook

[–]andtheodor 3 points4 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hasbro is definitely not the ultimate arbiter for the words list. The TWL is the real player's dictionary, does not have bullshit words like "grrl", and isn't expurgated so you can play fun words like "comsymp" "feminazi, and "jigaboo"

If you want to play real Scrabble, check out sites like isc.ro where the pros play and you cannot use online help resources while playing. [edit: no association with the site aside from playing there]

[–]monkeyme 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

you cannot use online help resources while playing.

How can they possibly prevent you from doing that?

[–]andtheodor 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't know programming details but if you sign the fairplay agreement and open a browser window to word lists/anagramming sites/etc. you will be disconnected and forfeit the game. I know it works because I left a window open with www.morewords.com once when I started a game and was immediately booted.

I'm sure there are ways around it but it legitimizes 90% of the play there, unlike this FB or WWF crap which is wholly a competition of cheating.

[–]monkeyme 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wow. I suppose that is indeed technically possible however that would mean that this program also installs some sort of port sniffer too, which is pretty nuts.

But there is of course no way on god's green earth that they could possibly prevent you from doing the word lookups from another laptop/pc.

[–]keiyakins 0 points1 point ago

So it's running spyware on my PC? Fuck everything about that.

[–]Helix_van_Boron 0 points1 point ago

[–]SergeiKirov 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ahem, this is not hasbro's doing. This is mattel. Mattel owns the rights to scrabble outside of US & Canada and thus I suppose that's where you'll find this new word book. Hasbro has not published any such additions.. yet.

[–]andtheodor 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Right, but when they do it will be expurgated and likely full of crap like "w00t" and "grrl"

[–]scsoc 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The OSPD is owned by Hasbro and Merriam-Webster. The Tournament Word List the real, uncensored lexicon for serious players.

[–]NorthernSkeptic 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why do you consider feminazi a more legit word than grrl?

[–]andtheodor 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Really?

I mean, with widespread usage and accepted definition "grrl" is fine with me but we're not there yet.

[–]comfort_eagle 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That makes me really sad.

[–]TheRealRainFall 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Language shouldn't evolve or anything.

[–]SergeiKirov 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, because "grrl" and "thang" are really prime examples of modern terminology that better describes our world than previous vocabulary.

[–]OhZone 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Language is a form of communication, if it works, sometimes unfortunately you have to add it the big list of legit words. I'm just as sad as you are.

[–]MadCabbit 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

if "U" and "R" get added as words, I swear I will snap and start killing people in dispair over the failure of humanity.

[–]OhZone 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

U're mad bro?

[–]comfort_eagle 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Of course language has evolved, and should continue to evolve. I am disappointed that Scrabble officials are beginning to accept such words as proper nouns and slang.

This has nothing to do with language changing, but with Scrabble changing.

Fortunately the "official" changes don't affect my Scrabble experience, as I only play with my older family members who use pretty strict rules.

[–]andtheodor 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Use the OSPD TWL!!!

Mattel and Hasbro have nothing to do with the rules of Scrabble. They own the trademark, that's it.

[–]scsoc 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Except they, along with Merriam-Webster, also own the stupidly censored OPSD. Use the Tournament Word List, as it is not censored, nor is it corporately owned.

[–]andtheodor 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Dammnit, that is what I meant. I play with TWL 2006 online.

[–]trolling_thunder 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I commented on this a lot when the noun thing was first announced. The game of Scrabble does NOT allow proper nouns. But the actual announcement was truncated by hacksters like Salon and the Globe and Mail (who continue to do so, by the way), just because it makes for a more attention grabbing story.

I've heard nothing from anyone other than the above named sources about the addition of "grrrl" and the like so, until officially shown otherwise, I'm assuming the same holds true.

[–]Helix_van_Boron 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wasn't the proper nouns thing originally an Onion article?

[–]trolling_thunder 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not that I know of. When someone talks now about "Scrabble allowing proper nouns", they're actually referring to the latest in Mattel/Hasbro's long line of largely forgettable Scrabble spinoffs.

[–]bittersister 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thanks. I wish there was a way to play people that actually want to play real words instead of cheat. At least online.

[–]NoahTheDuke 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How is that cheating at all? The list has always been fully chosen by the Scrabble officials. How is this any different?

I now see these were added by Hasbro. Makes sense, as they're aiming for the Facebook demographic, but I still don't see how it could be considered "cheating." The rules for this version are now different, that's all. Same way the multiplier spaces on Words With Friends are in different spots.

[–]comfort_eagle 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I believe you mean to say "eg," since you are giving an example. "ie" is used in the same way as "in other words..."

I don't mean to be pedantic, but I thought you might like to know.

Either this was set up, or he's using a cheat app (which I happened to notice was the top paid app last week). This is why I only play WWF with friends and relatives who I am fairly sure won't cheat.

[–]narpas 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Meanwhile, I don't play WWF because I always get too tempted to cheat.

[–]andbruno 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When I feel the need to cheat, what I do is think for a while, make my move, THEN plug in my tiles into some word finder. If I got the best word, I feel happy, and if I didn't, then I learn something new (either a new word, a new strategy, a new place to look, or some shit like that). I figure it's win-win this way.

[–]andbruno 1 point2 points ago

I'm assuming it lets you input your letters and the board position and shows you the best move. I wouldn't know.

[–]Lokonopa 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There are tons of websites that allow you to do the same. Would be easier than an app, especially on the iPhone, so you can input the letters and board position while looking at the damn board.

[–]cynix 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think the cheat apps on the iPhone allow you to load a screenshot of your game board and OCR it so you don't have to input anything manually.

[–]aligatorstew 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm not sure there's any criteria in getting the highest score ever... It shouldn't matter if it was setup or not. It's still the highest score recorded either way.

[–]andbruno 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Of course it matters. If two NBA teams conspire to let one team score, and the game ends 2000-0, it won't go in the record books, people will get arrested and fined.

So should I start with the original series or the new ?

[–]sexybobo 4 points5 points ago

[–]i_have_a_name 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Couple of options.

I would recommend starting with the 2005 series, then going back and watching the classics, if you'd like.

Alternatively: Start with the fifth series, with Matt Smith. That was last years, and will get you up-to-date before starting in on the sixth series.

[–]chompsky 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I would start with the new, watch it up through the current stuff, then go back and watch old episodes if you're interested. The new series has a much more modern feel to it, but it's a continuation of the originals.

[–]Atman00 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I recommend starting at the 5th season. The first season of the reboot wasn't that great. The 5th was designed as a jumping on point, and is fantastic. Once you're hooked, you can go back and watch the beginning of the 2005 series, then hit some classics if you're up for it.

[–]cliffhanger407 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you want one episode to get you hooked, watch Blink (Series 3) with David Tennant. From there, maybe watch The Girl in the Fireplace. If you think you can get into it even with a little bit of silliness, Series 1 is a great starting point.

Series 5 is great starting point but you'll miss a lot, so once you re-watch all the new episodes you'll want to watch it again. But that's ok, since they have a lot of layers that will keep you interested.

If you have Netflix, it's all available on watch instantly except the current series.

[–]Dopplegangr 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I haven't heard of half of those words, but the only one I couldn't find in the official scrabble dictionary was wop. According to google, it's a racial slur/slang. Slang isn't allowed is it? Does WWF allow words Scrabble doesn't?

[–]alyosha_k 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"Wop" is playable in tournament play, which uses the Official Word List (OWL). The Official Scrabble Players Dictionary (OSPD) has gone through a number of revisions; the most dramatic was the switch from 2nd to 3rd edition, where Selchow and Righter, then owners of the Intellectual Property, caved to political correctness and opted to remove defamatory words from the dictionary. The players protested, and thus the word lists were split, with "dirty words" such as "wop," "kike" and "nigger" only being allowable in tournament play.

[–]andbruno 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't know if you're talking about the change I'm going to mention, but the biggest one for me was the inclusion of game-changing words like "za" and "qi". Now you can plop down one or two tiles and get 40+ points. Before only X really allowed this (and occasionally J with jo).

[–]Babrook 0 points1 point ago

I dont care if I lose anymore, all I try to do now is try and insult my opponent.

I managed to get "you" "are" "cum" "dumpster" in quick succession earlier. Quickly followed by a "you whore" in chat.

It's no oxyphenbutazone, but it'll do.

[–]kurosan 0 points1 point ago

That's counted as a (im?)moral victory amongst my friends- if you can offend your opponent or simply be elegantly crude, then it's a victory beyond the mere points value

[–]eadsm 2 points3 points ago

I played 'dreamily' once in a live club game. It straddled two triple-words and scored over 400.

isc.ro

Romanian url seems sketchy, I know, but the owner of the site has family there, and the hosting is cheaper. The most legitimate and least cheater-filled place to play.

I've only played scrabble. This game seems incredibly liberal with their words. AE, Trad? My kids would love this as they just throw down what sounds like a word and look it up if someone questions them when they are stuck.

[–]MelodicGravity 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you look at the official Scrabble dictionary, both of those words are listed.

Ae means one, it's a word.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You don't even have to look up the word. It won't let you make the play if it's not real.

[–]fatfattypoop 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

still though, a quick google define doesn't have ae as anything except for an abbreviation or a suffix

This is also true of the iOS Scrabble app. And you can use its dictionary as much as you want.

[–]ethraax 0 points1 point ago

Which is why Words with Friends is terrible. All people seem to do is play random high-scoring combinations of letters until something clicks. Seriously, they should at least have a lockout policy (5 bad word attempts = lose turn, or possibly even 3).

Conceptualising*

I guess getting more points in WWF is easier in the US.

[–]monkeyme 0 points1 point ago

True. Although I think Z in British English Scrabble is worth more points than in US version.
