How was this picture taken? It looks like the camera was above him, and the cockpit canopy is off (!).

So let's say the planes have to take off really quickly... how does that happen in this scenario?

[–]RobinTheBrave 0 points1 point ago

I think there are also 2 catapults towards the end of the angled runway (that's usually used for landing).

OTOH, there's more to launching a plane than just wheeling it into place. By the time they've got it ready they could have moved the others around.

[–]scaryghosts 0 points1 point ago

They won't.

Honestly, is this the answer? Is it showmanship? I'm really being serious.

I believe this maneuver is known as "waxing the hangerbay".

[–]scaryghosts 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That nonskid needs constant waxing.

[–]zzorga 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, so that more nonskid can be properly applied.

You know what happens when you don't give the decks enough grip? You get a bunch of pissy whites and some seriously skittish reds.

Screw that junk, I'm an airdel . You can have your V division life all you want.

Veteran here...It is purely for show...kinda...it serves several purposes.

  1. A visual record of all the aircraft on ship. It sounds overkill, but if that was the last picture ever taken of that ship, it makes sense.
  2. It's a show of strength...The US Navy has at least 11 aircraft carriers, including 4 at sea at all times. Pacific, Atlantic, Mediterranean Sea and Indian Ocean fleets.
  3. Every Battle Group will produce a unique "yearbook" for participating members to purchase after deployments, they use these type of pictures to fill the pages. Sailors and Marines buy them to commemorate their Sea Service. It is something to show your grandkids I guess...

But most importantly, it serves as propaganda for the Military Industrial Complex.

edit* While this carrier is "showing off" the other carrier in the battle group is running air patrols in the surrounding vicinity, ensuring no "lucky" enemy aircraft/subs stumble upon them in such a vulnerable state. More than likely, the photo was taken shortly after "setting off" before reaching international waters, thus minimizing exposure.

I think in an actual war time scenario the ship stores the planes inside and has some on the deck (the ones they need to launch). They don't carry them on the deck like that because all the planes are sitting ducks for a lucky enemy jet. But if they were randomly attacked in that configuration they can still launch planes because the diagonal runway is the one they use. They would just have to shuffle some planes around to make sure nothing was on the runway and a plane could take off fairly fast. You'll notice that there are not planes that are fully on the runway

[–]ilmmad 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, the diagonal runway is for planes that are landing. Aircraft take off by using the steam catapults, which are the lines on either side of the 69 and I think on the diagonal runway as well. Look at this.

You. Simple shit like this makes me love reddit.

[–]realigion 0 points1 point ago

Yeah I know they have elevators that bring the aircraft below deck, so I'd assume they'd have just a few "on board" ready to take off.

But quite honestly, there would rarely be a situation in which they'd have to launch without at least a couple of hours of notice - and then on top of that the ACC has to get in position anyhow.

http://www.public.navy.mil/navsafecen/Documents/media/flight%20awareness/flightdeckawareness-5thEdition08.pdf

They show off when they come in to the port. The deck is often pretty full, but not that full. At sea, there are often planes on patrol, and there is always a plane on alert, ready to take-off in minutes.

The reasons to keep them below deck are space and maintenance, not vulnerability. If a plane is at risk, so is the rest of the ship.

[–]Darthmalt 0 points1 point ago

Totally guessing but I would imagine part showmanship, (same reason they line the deck with seamen in dress uniforms) and partly to clear a large space below decks for whatever post deployment activities they need to do.

I worked summer camp and at the end we'd take up a huge parking lot sorting and counting equipment. So I imagine on a carrier they need all the space they can get.

Upvote for snarky historical wrongness. Though, with the new USNS Cesar Chavez(*) coming out soon, you have to wonder.

*Oddly enough, Chavez was stridently anti-illegal alien, so much so that some of his UFW guys busted up some illegal alien scab farming operations. You would think that this would preclude him getting a ship named after him.

aren't these vessels scared of big waves? how to the protect the planes from tipping over if it gets bumpy?

Fleet carriers are enormous. Waves barely effect them.
