Is everyone forgetting about Cedar Point? In my eyes Cedar Point completely makes up for everything else wrong with Ohio, it is the best amusement park I have ever been to. Plus the area around Cedar Point (Sandusky) is awesome and almost feels like you're on the coast of an ocean. I try to go to Cedar Point and Put-In-Bay Island every year for vacation.

Take some friends and rent a charter fishing boat in Sandusky to fish perch. You'll all have your limit in a few hours and have hundreds and hundreds of fish to cook for the rest of the year.

I live in NYC and I try to go to Ohio on vacation every year just because of this place...

I rode the Dragster and Millenium Force last year. SO AWESOME. I never liked riding rollercoasters until a few years ago on a trip to Cedar Point. I went with a friend and decided it was time for me to man up. Within 15 minutes of entering the park I was on the raptor. After that I felt like I could ride anything. So later in the day I decided to take the ultimate leap and get in line for the Dragster. Waiting in line for that was the most intense, stressful, scary moment of my life. Riding it was awesome and afterwards I felt so stupid for being so scared of it waiting in line because it wasn't bad at all, in fact it was really fun. Now I'm not afraid of anything, thanks Top Thrill Dragster!

I refuse to ride NJ's copycat Kingda Ka. Rivalry from living in NY I guess lol. I don't even go to that park in NJ.

tl;dr Faced my deepest fears at cedar point and now those fears are completely gone. I'm only afraid of spiders that appear out of nowhere next to my mouse and keyboard now.

We went to Cedar Point every summer while I was growing up. And we would get $2 bills (from my dad's company), so that was nifty. I still remember where we parked for a couple of years because my parents told me to remember the parking space number and I took them a bit too seriously.

Can't believe it's been over a decade since I've been in Ohio (unfortunately in Florida, not outer space). Someday I'll have to go back to Cedar Point to see how much it has changed in 20 years.

This is the best part of King's Island. Great coasters (though it's no Cedar Point) and no waiting. The worst part is that you are forced to stare at the abandoned remains of Son of Beast the entire time...

"When the end of the world comes, I want to be in Cincinnati because it's always twenty years behind the times." -Mark Twain

As a current Cincinnatian I can attest to this. The same holds true for a lot of Ohio.

Pushing your hair up in various forms is not what makes this out of style; just Google "popular men's haircuts 2011" and you'll see that many of the styles are essentially variations of this sort. The thing that makes this look very late-90's is the fact that it's so obviously over-gelled. You can almost count the amount of little gelled 'spikes' around his head. It's like something you'd find in a style book at GreatClips.

There has been a trend toward much more natural looking and feeling hair in recent times. Girls don't want to touch your head and feel like they're rubbing a hedgehog's back. A good way to see what I mean is to compare the hairstyles of characters in popular television shows that spanned most of the past decade. Except for Ted Mosby's hair. What a disaster.

If your hair looks like the hair in that picture, chances are you need to stop buying the $3.99 tub of hair product at Walmart and walk into a salon.

I've lived long periods of time in 5 states and in 2 foreign countries and Ohio is fine. No its cities are not as amazing as Barcelona or Stockholm or San Francisco or NYC but cities like Columbus and... well OK, we'll limit it to Columbus... is actually a very nice city with plenty to do. Lots of good, unique restaurants of all sorts, vibrant arts scene, an awesome world class zoo, great sports (pro and college), good schools, comfortable neighborhoods, historic areas (German Village, Victorian Village), diverse neighborhoods, good shopping, decent traffic, cool radio stations, funky events (The Arnold Classic being a recent one) and, for at least half of the year anyway, excellent weather... it's really a nice city.

Beats anywhere I lived in Florida or Georgia by a long shot.

Everyone talks about the big C's (Columbus, Cinncinnati, Cleveland) well, but try living a few years in Toledo and see if you still have a will to live at the end.

I have a love-hate relation with Toledo. Every time I'm away from it (in Georgia right now) I slowly start to feel a bit of longing for the place - then I visit home and realize why I got the hell out.

Columbus is a wonderful city. It's spacious, there is great economic growth, the people are friendly, everything is cheap and there are all kinds of wonderful universities in the area.

[–]Skookah 90 points91 points ago

I've always seen Ohio as one of those states about which many people make jovial jabs, but usually with the understanding (somewhere, possibly deep in their subconscious) that it's not really "bad" in any sense. I've never seen anyone make an Ohio joke with even a hint of animosity. Not like, say, Florida. Or any of the Virginias.

Columbus is the best city in Ohio. Anyone who lives in Columbus knows this. Cleveland and Cincinnati are alright, but they've got this whole "crumbling industry" vibe. Columbus never had any industry and now its all government and white collar jobs. The one bad thing about Ohio though is our governor is a dickhead. And southeastern ohio is just awful.

[–]AlterdCarbon 56 points57 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

southeastern ohioans are awful.

FTFY

Southeastern Ohio has the Hocking Hills, foothills to the Appalachians. Amazing scenery and hiking/outdoorsy stuff. I would compare it to some areas in upstate NY.

I love that area! My parents got married at Ash Caves, at the cave with the giant rock on it that overlooks the area where the waterfall spills out. We always called it Old Man's cave when I was a kid, but I don't know if that's the actual name of that specific cave. It's such a beautiful area. I want to go back some time.

[–]eklop 5 points6 points ago

Former OU Alumni/current Clevelander here. Athens is wonderful, but it is surrounded by a bunch of nothing (cough, Nelsonville, cough).
I love Cleveland though, born and raised. The city proper is actually on a good path right now, the problem is the city needs a larger population to properly sustain a local economy. Also, nothing against Cbus (I have many friends there) but I kind of can't stand it, well Dublin at least. I mean yeah it is very nice but every building under 20 years old. Seems fake to me

UPVOTE! I don't see what's all that bad about Ohio... I have lived in Cincinnati all my life and think it's a pretty cool city. Sure, it's a little ghetto in several places but it has this old, mysterious antiquity about it that you don't notice right away. I live in Clifton and every house here is about 100+ years old. The architecture is gorgeous too (once you ignore the empty beer cans scattered about after a Friday night and the homeless people scamming you for bus money. I guess you get that in any major city though...)

haha i always feel the same way - whenever I leave Columbus and drive through circleville and such, I'm always reminded why that stereotype exist. Plus South of cbus really needs to be another state - its a different world and it gets "southern" extremely quick.

Holy shit, I haven't thought about that place in ages. Don't know if your talking about the one in Akron but before I moved out of Ohio I drove a cab and would spend entire nights picking up strippers to take them to work, then picking up guys to take them to the strip clubs, then later taking the guys back home, then taking the strippers home. Good times.

This happens with planes as well. Once on an airplane, we were instructed to buckle up the seat belt as we were over Ohio.

I lived in Cincinnati all my life. On times that I had to take trips to Columbus, I would bring a DVD player and watch LotR. I barely had to watch the road because the trip is nothing but straight road and corn fields.

ummm head a little more west guys. I'm from illinois and go to school at ohio state. I felt like i was on a safari through the Brazilian rain forest on the drive to Columbus when compared to illinois. I'm pretty sure illinois is flat enough and boring enough to be considered a 2 dimensional plane.

The only real thing I actually dislike about Ohio is how everyone from that state is obsessed with Ohio State. And their fans are pretty arrogant/rude! They also have a weird sense of pride about their state unlike most other states. They have this "Texas of the midwest" kind of mentality -- very much "my state is better than yours". Anyway, Columbus is nice, Cleveland has some charm to it (at least in patches), Cinci has kind of a cool vibe when you avoid the evangelical/conservative types, but there are a load of dumpy cities: Akron, Canton, Toledo, Dayton, Lima, Youngstown. True of most rustbelt states I guess.

[–]jschaeper 22 points23 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Please don't lump all Ohio State fans like that. I love OSU but that doesn't make me arrogant/rude. I enjoy watching them. I enjoy when they win. I am sad when they lose. My whole world does not revolve around them though. Most people I know are not like that. Please don't overgeneralize.

[–]Bhockzer 10 points11 points ago

Akron is not dumpy. Youngstown is dumpy enough for two cities though...so I guess it evens out.

Hey man, Ohio high school, class of '04 here, don't put it up on a pedestal. It's fun and all, and sure you get that whoo-I-see-the-tiny-blue-speck-from-orbit-and-it-makes-the-world's-differences-seem-petty-and-irrelevant---and-maybe-we-should-all-work-together-instead-of-focusing-on-narrow-viewpoints feeling. But I haven't used my spacesuit once since then.

Edit: Plus seriously, the feeling is great and all, but in like two-weeks you'll hate Michigan again.

Ohio politics are absolutely terrible, we are so far in the dark ages on so many levels. That is what makes most people want to blast off into space, or at least just GTFO of Ohio. But, living in Cleveland for almost 20 years, I can tell you that the entrepreneur activity these days around here is very active and the pulse of the people is very progressive. The creative community (especially the craft beer makers and culinary explorers) is really starting to embrace and subsequently transform this city and state, and it is the first attempt at revival I have seen actually working throughout this city and Cuyahoga county in general. It is working East and West, and most importantly, even bridging the decades old gap between Cleveland's Eastsiders and Westsiders.

It is a beautiful state, too. Come visit!

I don't know.

We got that castle law passed, and the restaurant carry bill.

The punishment for marijuana is rather sane under 100g.

We don't have too many crazy abortion and religious laws that some states have. Wish we could get rid of the Sunday alcohol shit, though.

We also have Kucinich.

On the other hand, we suck at same-sex marriage laws.

Ohio born and raised.

The reason there were so many astronauts and the Wright Brothers and more Presidents than any other state is because of one thing....

Being raised in Ohio, for the most part, means good, honest traditional values and a very strong work ethic. Tie that in to politeness, caring for others, helping your neighbor, etc. and you'll get why this is a cradle of greatness.

I'm from California and through my experience in the military, I've had the opportunity to have visited Dayton and Cleveland. Although completely different kind of cities, Dayton the sprawling suburbia type and Cleveland the Metropolitan type, both experiences were friggin terrific! Great people, great food and great sports! What more can you ask for? One thing I remember the most, upon returning from a tour in the Middle East, was this downtown Cleveland Police Officer. Once he found out we were just returning from overseas, he walked us over to this hip nightclub and TOLD the owner that we were to all get in free and the owner happily obliged. Cleveland rocks!

Can't speak for much of Ohio, but Cincinnati blows. Like really blows. My wife and I moved here from Houston 6 months ago to be closer to family. Being born and raised one state away in Indiana, the backwards, conservative, "keep your head down" attitude of the people here is soul crushing. Can't wait to move back to sunshine, happy people, and an economy that's worthwhile.

Upvote for a passionate response from someone who is clearly the target of the joke here.

Redditor from Denison (near CBus) here. I have lived in Ohio for 90% of my life, gone K-12 at a superb Ohio public school, now an undergraduate at an Ohio private liberal arts university, nearly all of my extended family lives within the state borders, and I love Ohio.

Yeah, there's a lot that lame about Ohio, but I have always thought that Ohio and the people that live here fulfill a lot of the Asian stereotypes. We keep our heads down, we value family, we are very hard working, and when we get excited about something, people snidely mock us (O H !).

But yeah, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. It may be boring, but it is damn peaceful here.

Having lived in the burbs of Cleveland for 18 years and in beautiful Athens for the past 3, I have some real love for the state of Ohio. I had a sheltered cushy middle class childhood and never really witnessed any downsides of life based upon where I was living. Because of my experiences growing up I have always had such Cleveland/general Ohio pride. There is no way that most of the southern states and the mid-eastern states could provide more than Ohio. California, Illinois and Colorado are probably the only other places I would like to live more than Ohio.

I've lived here my entire life and I grew up in the poorest most illiterate, uneducated, unemployed part of the state (southeastern). I have heard this joke before and while I am certainly not offended by it, I think I look at a different way. WE FUCKING PRODUCED THIS MANY ASTRONAUTS! How cool is that! 24 human beings that were born and raised in this state had what it took to become a part of one of the smallest most select classes of people in the world. I'm proud of that. And we produced two of the best in Glenn and Armstrong. We also produced the second most presidents though most of them were some of the worst. Ohio is a weird-ass state, we are all at once a river state, a lake state, a flat plains state. We have elements of being a southern state, an Appalachian state, a metropolitan state in our 3C cities and a traditional mid western farming state. It's a fucked up state but I think it is the best kind of fucked-up!
