I am from Charles City. That picture was taken near Osage, IA which is where Orchard is located. That is not even a funnel cloud. It's just a supercell storm most likely capable of producing tornadoes. I think they just got some nasty wind and giant hail. I remember seeing that picture on the local news that night. Good find on Snopes Mr. Wafflemonster.

And I am slightly baffled that something so close to home is on Reddit. Neat.

Those grain bins are at least 60 feet in diameter. If that was a real funnel cloud, a lot of that stuff would probably be airborne.

This was not a funnel cloud. Our local NWS used this photo during spotter training to demonstrate how when your view of the horizon is obstructed, you may mistake other cloud structures as a funnel cloud or tornado. That said it was still probably a structure in a powerful storm, and seeking shelter would not be a bad idea at all.

Actually looks more like a really low wall cloud or downdraft, not a funnel cloud unless there's rotation that cannot be seen from this angle

I remember when this photo came out and I think there was some hubbub over it technically not being a tornado, but either way there's going to be a hell of a lot of wind if it's as close as the picture makes it look.

we have satellites that would probably pick it up. Still a cool idea though.

Another issue would be the expenditure of energy to create the tornado related to how much you'd be accumulating -- seems pretty inefficient.

I'm pretty shocked that this old pic was run on the first page of the NY times and labelled as such. It looks to me like an updraft base and part of the wall cloud of a supercell but it's hard to tell with the obstruction.

Kinda like this taken south of Emporia KS, 5/21.

I can confirm this, I know Lori. Her husband BBQs the best pork loin in that kick ass grill. Cool to see this pic again, and on Reddit!. My father owned the house right across the street, the tree on the left is in his yard. He was the Mayor of Orchard (83 people!) when the pic was taken. Since moved to Rudd. I'll link to the pic of me standing in the yard if i can find it.

Any thoughts on whether or not this is real? I was working at a tv station near there that day, and we received this photo. It was immediately thrown out by the news director as fake.

I don't know, I figured it was real with a slightly longer-than-normal exposure, but I guess I wouldn't be surprised if it was fake either.
