In my limited research I haven't found anything to contradict it. I've only found overwhelming corroboration. As far as I can tell this stuff is real, but for ethical reasons it doesn't happen anymore.

Actually I take it back, I expected to Google it and just see it completely ripped apart. But all I'm finding is evidence that it's true.

Although some of the scenes were exaggerated or staged apparently.

I looked around for a bit I'm still at 80% though, I certainly won't go around throwing it around as anything close to fact. I'm from Russia and according to my mom most Russians dismissed experiments such as that as total bullshit which the Soviets were full of, making up bullshit experiments and statistics to make themselves appear more competent than they really were.

It seems like a pretty substantial experiment, I understand moral implications (actually I don't, it's a dog, science>dog) of the issue but you would assume an experiment like this to at least have been replicated inside the soviet union or possibly other countries that aren't so sensitive about these things such as China. It doesn't seem like they ever were so considering the experiments were never done again and like I said the Soviets were full of shit so I would feel reliability comfortable dismissing these experiments.

Still kind of wish a credible source would step up and prove/disprove this.

I think it depends on your definition of succeeded. It's thought the decapitated dog was mostly brain dead and the other experiments tended to die relatively quickly.

That's even more blatantly unethical (though frankly I'd be okay with it) and it's not always a good idea to start with humans. In fact it was probably a bad idea to try with dogs. I'd try with the simplest possible organism with a defined head and brain and then work my way up. That way you have less to deal with the first time and then you have something to work off of all subsequent times.

I just think it's ridiculous people get angry about scientists using animals in experiments to further our understanding of the world. Especially in just plain awesome experiments like the Russian who tried to transplant heads.

I think it's ridiculous to be ok with subjecting unwitting innocent creatures to experiments that are only meant to further OUR causes. I don't see what's more unethical about using someone on death row instead of a dog. Not at all.

Though, uncomfortable truth be told, the Nazis got a lot of very useful data and could have gotten amazing data had they not been so fucking insane. Science without ethics is very fast and powerful. Personally I think our ethics are way too strict and hamper our progress, but I work in computational science so I can't really claim it directly effects me. It does hamper those who do the experiments that inform and ultimately determine the truth or falsehood of the models I work on.

I don't even think humans have a "will" in the way most people mean it. Although in this case I simply meant that the animals have no way of understanding what will be done to them or why. It's not at all a moral thing for me, it's simply pragmatic. These experiments have the potential to advance our scientific knowledge, the least controversial way to do them is to experiment on animals. If the least controversial way to do them was to experiment on unwilling people, I would support that as well, although the wider scientific community would not. Hell there are TONS of rules about what you can do with animals, let alone people.

I just watched that video, and it looks pretty darn real. What I saw I think was a precursor to life support machines, but I don't have any evidence to support that idea. I never thought about it before, but something had to be used to test those machines. I'm not happy about it, though. I'm not a fan of animal testing.

For me it is not so much the head but the unanswered question of how the dog died. Clearly it must have been in good health to be brought back to life...
