Looks like a brown bear. Actually, I think I was wrong. Even if a bear is bigger than a lion, lions are better killers than bears. I just watched lions take down an elephant on BBC.

In actual fights between bears and lions (obviously organised by people, not just happening naturally) bears win 100% of the time. Lions have relatively thin skulls, the bears just crush right through them.

exactly. bears are built to dig up roots and have very dense skeletons. lions and tigers are built for speed, which requires light weight skeletons. grizzly bears kill big cats in a single swat.

Black bears are not the most aggressive nor largest bears though. Grizzlies are a different case.

Everland Zoo is infamous for housing tigers and lions together, two animals that don't share the same habitat in the wild. This is what happens when they're not kept separate. I've also read that there have been lions and tigers killed in Korean zoos as a direct result of them sharing the same space. From what I've seen, Korean society lags behind the rest of the developed world when it comes to treatment of animals. I'll judge all I want.

Edit: I'm not some bleeding-heart vegetarian PETA supporter. I just think it's retarded to house two territorial species together if they can seriously injure or even kill each other.

I thought the same thing. I'm certainly no animal behavior expert but they were doing exactly what domesticated house cats do all the time. In fact, I've seen domesticated cats fight MUCH worse than that video and then 5 minutes later sleep on top of each other.

I agree it's stupid to house them together, but supervised visitation is pretty common in zoos with young animals. A lot of animal keepers believe that repeated and early introduction to a variety of different situations (with positive reinforcers) makes for a better-adjusted zoo animal. Behavior in mammals is not my area, but I know people who I believe on this topic. Although absolutely unsafe to do with adults, babies are introduced to eachother and allowed to socialize.

That isn't directed against your comment. I just want to draw a clear line between healthy socialization and a failure to meet the animal's safety needs.

I've been helping a friend take care of some privately owned lions and tigers, and there is only one cage out of many that has both a lion and tiger in it. It's a male lion and female tiger, and they've grown up together from what I understand. The rest are separated by species. The bears are kept separately, too.

Le translate.

Let me explain: This is a zoo where they train animals to cohabit (Everland zoo :Zootopia). The lion cubs are a month older then the bear, so the trainer thought they could be friends. The bear was too timid and she put the bear back to it's original cage with the monkey. (Note: the monkey and the bear were cohabiting for at least a month prior to this video).

The bear will be ok, There is nothing wrong with this training. You guys can't read korean nor understand it so you guys have misjudged.

Edit. Looks like the video has been translated on YouTube. Everland Park is a truly unique park in Korea where animals are introduced to each other early so they will get along in the same habitat space. The lion was actually just a month older than the bear, but the bear freaked out.

The monkey introduced in the later part of the vid has actually lived with the bear for a month. Although the bear was scared shitless, someone from the site stated that there was a followup video of the bear doing much better in the company of other animals.

Hilarious video! The bear reminds me of one of my dogs who acts totally clueless and unaware of his surroundings and is easily startled like the bear was. I think its great the zoo is attempting to socialize these two animals because it is great for the overall health of the animal. It is much tougher to do when they are adults than when they are younger. Kudos zoo!

Honestly, just because it appeared to be "playing", it certainly doesn't mean that it actually was. Humans like to anthropomorphise, and that's the bane of most ethologists and animal behaviourists. It may well have been in distress throughout the entire time, or it might not have been. The fact is, you can't tell, but putting your own perceptions of what it's feeling based on your own experiences as a human is inherently flawed.

Anyone looking at my post with scepticism, I urge you to read up on the debate over "aggression" in animal behaviour.

Its very scary video of a couple of guys putting that baby bear in a lions den. They wanted the bear to get friendly with the lions, but it just scared the poor thing out of its mind. I so felt sad for the bear after I saw the video.

Haha exctly this bear reacts the exact same way to a - lion, monkey, it's reflection. I really doubt it is bein traumatized. In the longer video the bear ambushes all three. Adorable.
