Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

It's a 'collage' (aka a nice way of saying photoshop) according to the photographer, not not as you think. The plane did pass from there but a lot of different shots with different exposures were taken and then combined in the end with means of photoshop to get that final image.

From the looks of it, a plane will always pass from there so photographer had all the time in the world to get it right, combining different photos of the same location with different lighting effects.

More from the photographer here: http://tinyurl.com/3d4xltg

Nice one, nevertheless.

[–]oatmealsnap 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The site doesn't seem to be working right now, but it seems like you are describing an HDR photo. HDR isn't exactly a collage, or completely photoshopped. If this is in fact an HDR, then all they used photoshop for was to merge several photos together to get balanced color in the highlights and in the shadows.

[–]garoorag 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm not sure where the technical definition of HDR stops, but when you say HDR it usually means feeding the multiple exposures to an algorithm and letting it work its (ugly, tacky) magic.

As I understand it (and as I already assumed from looking closer at the resulting photo), the photographer didn't do that, but essentially did a manual collage of the sky+plane in a photo, and the building in another photo. It just so happens that (unless he's lying) both photos were taken from exactly the same spot, but it wouldn't make that much of a difference to the final image if they weren't.

(Not that I'm minimizing the achievement or doubting the reality. I choose to believe that the photographer actually did capture the plane in the "skylight".)

unless you read in the Matrix, how do you read result to declare it's legit?

edit : i'm not saying the photo is shopped, I'm just questioning the analysis. I've butchered many, many photos and forensic-ed them, yet it always "seems legit". From the beginning I think this site is just a toy for trolls.

[–][deleted] 28 points29 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The error level analysis only works if the image is comprised of two or more different source images which had significanlty different level of compression or resolution.

Any shop which is hard to tell is a shop by eye is likely to pass error level analysis too.

[–]frogsofwar 29 points30 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

http://errorlevelanalysis.com/permalink/b8bbdbe/

Two shitty jpegs stuck together really quick. Yet the analysis says... what? Can you read it and make some deductions now?

The FELA site has been used here to show how much pics have been edited, most of the pics taken in example were beauty pics of some models, not at all pics made of several images. I've read many times how the program is supposed to work, but still, I can't tell what it's supposed to show.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I agree, it's not a useful tool to detect if an image has been manipulated; I've only seen it work with screamingly obvious shops.

[–]frogsofwar 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And on your example, the FELA doesn't who the image has been manipulated. It only shows that there are different brightness values in the image. You find the exact same pattern on Jackson than on the shopped head. http://i.imgur.com/IAeaG.jpg

[–]garoorag 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've wondered every time it was mentioned on Reddit, because it made no sense to me.

So what you're saying is that the only case it can actually work is if someone used jpegs from Google Image as source material for a composite shot? And most of its uses on Reddit are wrong? That does make more sense.

[–]frogsofwar 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But if you check all the examples above, you'll see that even this does not make any sense.

We should request the guy who wrote this program to do an IAMA

[–]garoorag 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think it does. If I understand it correctly now, you're not supposed to look at how bright the colors are or whatever: you're supposed to check out what the patterns look like on comparable areas of the image.

See the outline of the plane, and the areas where the building receives average lighting: they look the same in the analysis, which should mean that they both come from comparable sources (i.e. the guy didn't go on Google Images to find a plane). If you have a full-resolution image, maybe you could even tell if they come from the same camera.

Although that's not at all what the site's explanation says. But I'm just gonna decide that they don't know what their own algorithm measures. It can happen.

Never mind, I just saw your example. (Somehow I just thought people were jokingly referring to the original plane as a Spitfire.) Yeah, well, I'll just go with "this thing is bull and I damn well hope it doesn't end up in courtrooms."

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

The shutter speed makes me think the picture is two parts: the sky/plane, and the building. The 1/3200 or whatever really-fast shutter speed used to freeze the plane couldn't have captured the building looking as lit as it does.

I guess it could be that the building is getting a metric ton of sun though... it could be legit. I'm thinking not, but there's a chance it is.

[–]natbythefoot 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was also searching for this site. Thanks.

[–]esssential 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Clearly it's shot at a very low aperture, if this was taken in one shot the plane would be a complete blur as the shutter speed would need to compensate for the aperture. Also, the building and sky/plane are clearly shot at 2 different exposures, if not more.

[–]LinksUncle 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

actually, it's just that his camera has the ability to capture the space-time continuum so that there are no fuzzy pics of moving objects. especially objects moving at the speed of an airplane that fly provocatively close to buildings.

Don't know why everyone claims this is shopped... Planes take off over the same paths everyday. If indeed the path intersected this building perfectly, there would be plenty of opportunities for this shot everyday.

I guess it's just the default internet's reaction to unusual photographs.

[–]hogiewan 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]ComeUpon 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

With all due respect, all digital photographs are "shopped" in some way. From these comments, it sounds like the dynamic range of the scene being photographed was too large for the sensor of the camera being used, so the photographer had to use multiple exposures to create the image that you're seeing. This is just a very common and perfectly legitimate way of increasing dynamic range in a scene beyond the capabilities of the camera's sensor, so "shopped" doesn't seem like the appropriate term to use. Now, if the photographer had only taken an image of the building and then added a random image of an airplane from Google images, I would be prepared to call it shopped. But that's just not the case here.

[–]hogiewan 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

most photography IS 'shopped, but that doesn't mean that you can claim it "not'shopped" just because everyone else is doing it. It does make "as captured" a more rare and interesting thing.

[–]Stockholm_Syndrome 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It is shopped. Cameras can't record that wide of dynamic range. Either the building will be too dark or the sky (and subsequently the plane) will be blown out and rendered as just white.

[–]stumblejack 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Look how close the plane is. If the image is real, the plane is taking off or landing. Either way, the building is close to an airport, and there would be many opportunities for shots like this.

Not impressed.

[–]diskomo 7 points8 points ago

It's from Naples, and if I understand the comments on this page correctly it is composed of more than one exposure, but the exposure of top floors and the plane is real.

[–]adobiqt 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It can easily be real due to consistent landing/takeoff routes. Then again it can easily be shopped. We'll never know. It's a good job whether fake or not!

[–]Stockholm_Syndrome 0 points1 point ago

the lighting is basically proof that it's shopped in some way. Cameras just don't have that sort of dynamic range. Either the building will be too dark or the sky (and subsequently the plane) will be blown out and rendered as just white.

Yeah, they'll never be able to figure out where the RPG came from.

This was obviously shot in a higher resolution and later scaled down. The diagonal lines look kinda courious. They are a little jaggy and not blurry, like they typically are. They look a little bit like the diagonal lines in old Lucas Arts adventures.

I kinda like the effect. It would be cool to find out which program was used. But probably it's a simple nearest match filter with no interpolation...

Nah, as Bst1337 posted in another comment, that's clearly recognizable as abuse of a sharpening filter. (I know because I used to ruin my photos like this.)

This looks like it was taken in Austin, as those buildings look exactly like the Jefferson building I used to stay in while I visited up there. Freaky.

Why do so many people assume this was shopped? The jet isn't at a high altitude, so it is either taking off or landing. In both cases, the building would have to be near an airport, and the photographer would have many opportunities to take this shot.

Planes don't just randomly fly over houses. There must be a flight route, therefore there must be like 1000 planes passing every day. It could be even harder to get a shot without a plane, but you know that.

[–]Otaconbr 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And on top of the the plane capture, the building just looks awesomely cell shaded. Never seen an effect like that before.

Cool ass photo bro.

[–]korthrun 0 points1 point ago

Awesome shot. Gorgeous shot. A shot worth an upvote (shop or not). Not perfect.

A perfect shot would have seen the plane in the direct center, tip to tip, so that the spaces around it were symmetrical.
