i think donks are actually pretty sweet in a ridiculous way, but is there a name for this new fad where the car (or hair in this case) is modded to look like snack packaging? now that you brought it up, i guess I've only seen pics of donks cars with the snack look... is this a southern or midwestern thing? I've seen donks in philly but no snacks.

lots of uneducated people represent brands as art. Its a strong indicator to why uneducated people are also poorer. Edit: i also think its hilarious... see also: nascar fans with dale tattoos

Edit: It has little to do with Race and Gender. I would consider any person that spends money to have a giant oreo-cookie(insert brand here) sign on their head as less-educated and poorer than average. An educated person would spend money increasing their quality of life.

[–]WaxCop 9 points10 points ago

What about Louis Vuitton? Buying a $50 purse for $1000 doesn't strike me as an educated decision either.

[–]uncleawesome 2 points3 points ago

I don't get the attraction to using your body or car as free advertising. I live in the south and see this kind of self branding everywhere. Funny you mention NASCAR because some non target audience members have taken to wearing NASCAR driver jackets with matching shoes and shirts. I'm boggled every time I see someone dressed up like this.

[–]kiwala[S] 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What do you mean uneducated people representing brands as art is an indicator as to why uneducated people are poorer? I don't really see the correlation. Unless you mean when it's displayed like this and they are prevented from having a decent job?

[–]jvslacker 31 points32 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Nope. You live in a fantasy. The correlation is that having a brand displayed shows that you think you have status and some form of respect from your peers. It is at best a delusional outlook on life and hence shows a lack of real education and that lack of education thus keeps you poor.

[–]nidoran 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I agree that equating brands as status isn't very intelligent. But do you think this doo is an example of that? Even if it smacks of ghetto culture, it seems pretty creative and I bet a lot of work went into it!

[–]LinearFluid 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yep a lot of time and money, probably enough money to buy food for a week. That is the problem, it is the attitude of get money and buy useless stuff to make you look rich that keep people poor. Gotta love the hoopdee going down the road missing on a cylinder with 2 grand in rims on it, then they call in and say they can't get to work because their car won't start.

[–]DeLoreanMotorCars 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My wife was a "Big Sister" through Big Bro/Big Sis. Her little sister didn't have basic necessities such as shampoo and toothpaste (because they "couldn't afford it") so my wife would often buy that stuff for the whole family. The one day my wife brought them some supplies and the husband was outside setting up a 200 dollar giant inflatable snow globe, in which he had just purchased from Walmart. lol

[–]DongsNPongs 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Drove past the projects in my area yesterday. Giant castle "moon bounce" was out for a party. I never had one of those, but we bought our own fucking food.

[–]Creepwood 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When you are poor, those little extravagances make living seem worth it. Not defending a moon castle or a snow globe, but if you aren't poor try to understand in their position why they'd do it.

[–]LinearFluid 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The one thing that I do understand is that it is a cyclic system that help keep the poor poor.

I have been fortunate enough to interact with a lot of different monetary situation from the poor to old money to new money.

The one thing that I have learned is that old money looks like no money most of the time, new money looks like rich money for a while til the money runs out, The poor when they get money they try and look rich until the money runs out.

What is the one thing that divides?

The following statement, "Old money never touches the principle" The whole reason it is old money is because it is never touched. Most new money(IE Athletes, Entertainers, and Lottery winners) and poor never grew up learning that in order to have money you have to HAVE money that you can't go and spend a lot of it and expect to keep it.

What it comes down to is as simple as if you and the generations before you have never had money then how do you learn how to manage any money you might obtain.

right but in time, they will either become smart enough to keep their money and grow it, or spend into oblivion.

[–]kiwala[S] 6 points7 points ago

Oh, represent was meant as wear on themselves not just appreciate. I was thinking of it as more of a Warhol's Campbell soup type brand representations as opposed to strictly wearing on oneself. This makes much more sense, though.

[–]bostonmolasses 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

where is your correlation from?

[–]zeppelinfromled 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It seems that both being poor and this whole brand thing are caused by a lack of education. It was implied above that the brand thing is the reason that they are poor, when in reality, it's a correlation caused by a third aspect.

[–]alienproxy 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's pretty irresponsible of you to make this sort of claim about uneducated people without proper examination - even reflexive examination. "Having a brand displayed" is the norm. From one's car, home's architect, one's television set, brand of watch, purses, wallets, belts, clothing, all of this stuff is perfectly normal to display as a form of status in nearly any setting.

That sort of display isn't even subtle. Did you miss it, or is this woman a special case for you?

Any CEO would be considered extremely eccentric if he or she owned a practical vehicle costing under the $25,000 mark. Most CEOs make expensive choices for the purposes of 'playing the part'; that is, as a display for their peers, which is precisely the sort of behavior you're calling the mark of the uneducated and delusional.

Additionally, many people choose to wear t-shirts which say "Miller High Life" on them, or their favorite brand of cigarettes, or their favorite model car. It signifies their lifestyle choices and value system, etc..

When choosing between two clothing items with the same function and quality, many people would prefer the brand name items.

You've made some pretty bold assumptions about this woman, her outlook and her level of education. I'd be curious to see your reaction if the same hairstyle was on a white "hipster". Perhaps you'd think they were just being ironic and not make a single assumption about their education or lack thereof.

Maybe she is being paid, and these are desperate times. Or maybe, like myself, she's been called an "Oreo" all her life because she "sounds white" or is "black on the outside and white on the inside".

Or maybe, just maybe, SHE LIKES HER FUCKING COOKIES."

I know not one, but two educated people who have tattoos of Pabst Blue Ribbon cans on their bodies. This is far more permanent than a haircut and dye. One of them has a masters degree in design.

Tattoos along this line are far from uncommon. So to answer your question: Two weeks ago.

[–]anonemouse2010 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't know if I'd consider this the same, but point taken.

[–]jvslacker 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

O.k. seriously, you are kidding right. First I agree having a brand displayed is the norm for modern American culture. Having half of your hair shaved painted blue and applying Oreo stickers to simulate a packaged brand of cookies is not. I am not going to get reflexive with my examination about this. Get real.

The CEO garbage you are spouting is so far removed from this, I won't even respond to it. You have to be kidding me. Did you get this from your sociology 102 class. Blah blah.

Again, every example you gave about Miller High Life and clothing is not an equal comparison to this woman's choice of brand display. Again get real.

I stand by my bold assumption about this woman. I have worked in the NYC public schools for 6 years as a special education teacher and have first hand experience in this kind of behavior. If you cannot tell anything about this woman's level of education from this picture, I feel sad for your total lack of common sense and ability to read the most normal social cues. You are going to be taken advantage of by many people. Good luck.

Finally. I don't know why you want my opinion about white "hipsters." I am going to assume that you are implying racism on my part, since you brought race into this. I don't see how my thoughts and that have any bearing to this. I never once implied race to this or assumed anything about her skin color and her education. Do not label me because of your personal vendettas or problems.

All the maybes you present are stretches to say the least. You know inside these are not true. I know all about the Oreo stigma you are speaking of and can see from this person that this is not the case. I would happily bet a fortune that each one of the possible circumstances you presented are way off the mark. I would also bet a fortune, just looking at this woman's fashion sense that her level of education is pretty low.

Good day.

[–]CreateTheFuture 1 point2 points ago

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Zero correlation between having a brand displayed to show status and lack of education. Nothing he said shows any proof that a person lacks education or that they are poor.

When you use grammar, spelling and punctuation in the manner demonstrated in your reply, you provide an insight into your background or attitude which is not altogether flattering for oneself.

Right or wrong, some people might even call it "ghetto".

The English language is a powerful tool. Its use also defines many cultural boundaries. To use it casually in everyday banter is fine. When presenting a case for the obliteration of stereotypes it is probably best to use the language properly.

I would have to disagree with your previous statement. It would be foolish to assume another persons background and or attitude from a singular paragraph. I was indeed under the influence of the aforementioned tequila and therefore proper grammar, spelling and punctuation was of little importance to me at that point in time. However as the effects of the alcohol have diminished, feel free to continue assuming that you know anything about me besides the fact that I drink tequila and am a member of this site.

OK this is a hidden camera ffrom Costco or Samsclub. I can tell by the entrance I'm leaning more towards Costco.

Sams Club. On the left side of the picture you can see the right side of the Sams diamond logo.

Once again I'm going to say it and be downvoted for it, if you see a black woman with any kind of dayglo color in her hair, hoodrat.

Not sure I want to know if she's double-stuffed, it what the cream filling is made of.

These hats are given away at various stores, they have a small micro chip embedded in them which sends out a short-range subliminal signal that says, "Eat more Oreos".

As you can see, it works pretty good.

Excerpt from maintenance section of the user's manual:

"To power the unit, you will need to insert 3 power tokens (called oreos) into the lower face slot once per hour. Be warned not to insert fingers in slot while adding power tokens, as the grinding mechanism will damage them. Power tokens are available at major food retailers nationwide. Off brand power tokens can be used in the event of an emergency, but are not recommended for proper & consistant operation."

Do you think she could be making a racial statement? Oreo cookie = black on the outside, white on the inside?

[–]Pnutbuttersalamander 0 points1 point ago

There is absolutely no difference what-so-ever between this woman and someone proud to billboard Gucci.

[–]Nesman64 2 points3 points ago

She can use her Gucci to carry a pack of Oreos. Her hair serves no such purpose.

3 Downvotes : Indeed, the fact that the idea of display those shoes is the same thing as advertisement for those brands seems incongruous, is their biggest marketing accomplishment.
