  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

I have a new (actually some 6-years old) unopened 10-pack hidden in a waterproof sealed box somewhere in the basement. Many years later I will sell it and ensure myself a nice retirement and decent funeral.

[–]Dr_Fix 6 points7 points ago

nice. though you know, you can just go to Office Max and buy them.. they're about 5 bucks for a 10 pack.

i shit you not, the weapons R&D office i'm the janitor for still uses them regularly.

yeah, they're outdated but hey, if all you need is to move small data files around the office, [aka "sneaker net"] why not?

USB keys?

[–]stufff 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because they're slow as shit and expensive compared to USB flash media, even if you don't consider the storage capacity and convenience.

[–]Trinexx56 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, USB keys are banned pretty much anywhere there's anything worth stealing.

[–]stufff 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But Floppy disks are allowed? That seems rather silly considering that the magnetic storage on a floppy disk would be just as easy to sneak out as a USB key.

[–]kaspar42 5 points6 points ago

A giant electromagnet at all exits would eliminate that risk.

The very best thing about those old VHS tapes is definitely the cheesy commercials. Nothing captures an era like its commercials, and commercials are unfortunately very hard to stay around. If I could watch Star Trek TOS with the originals commercials, it would be even more awesome.

[–]ainmosni 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Funny thing about commercials is that they go from unbareable when they are relevant to more awesome the older they get.

I haven't used one in 10 years, but I am puzzled how anybody using the Internet wouldn't know about them. You still see them around all the time, and lots of people have dual dvd/vhs players.

What they should have shown there is an 8-track. I'm willing to bet that at least 9 out of 10 kids would not be able to identify an 8-track cartridge.

CVS still carries them in 6-packs, last time I checked. I had to buy them for our security cameras at work.

I also still use a dot-matrix impact printer (Like this) on a daily basis. And sometimes, I fax things!

It's like walking through a time machine when I go to work.

[–]angrybacon 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Dot-matrix printers will be around for a long time simply because they make carbon copies easily.

[–]PaxVitriol 52 points53 points ago*

I actually love that printer. It never jams, the ink ribbon is maybe $5 and lasts for 2 months (or forever.. it just gets lighter over time), the paper loads itself from the box I have on the floor, and there's no fucking HP Customer Endazzlement Photo-Awesomizer DigiMassage Software Suite with HappyEnding(tm) Foto-Finisher Technology. In fact, I'm not sure there's any software at all. It just plugs in and works!

Plus, I love tearing off the dotted edges of the paper. Ooooooh yeeeah... NSFW Pic

When you want a ride home, do you do a Collect Call in the pay phone, or simply do a double miss-call?

(Side memory: Our school used to have a pay phone where you stacked the coins on a sliding tray on the top, and they rolled in one after each other. The nice thing was that you could hold on to the first coin to prevent it from falling in, and do a miss-call without wasting precious soda money)

I just went ahead and downloaded this game to see if I could pass them now that I'm a proper adult. Unfortunately, seems like they're oriented to proper adults living in the 80s. It took me like 10 tries before I was able to start playing.

Also, I laughed at: O. J. Simpson is a. an R & B singer. b. under indictment. c. embarrassed by his first name (Olivia). d. no one to fool with. Correct answer: d.

My dad had a ton of dos games on the first computer we had, and this was one of them. It was funny first time through i put in my real age, it told me I was to young, so then I said i was 99 years old and it told me that the game might give me a heart attack; when I went for a medium age I just asked my mom all the questions it asked and got to play the game (for 2 minutes because I couldn't figure out anything about the game.)

I've only encountered one, about half a decade ago... this large floppy disk i'm holding has a capacity of 160KB. IMAGE

Here's a size comparison photo with some pennies, a pen, and an old hard drive platter. IMAGE

Yeah I tell people it's 8 inches floppy too, but nowadays it is more like 3 and a quarter

There's plenty of minors who know and use VHS movies still. What kills me was making a joke about Y2K to one of my students and having them ask me "What's Y2K?"

"Dear God girl, am I really that much older than you?" (I was 22, she's in middle school.)

[–]adoran124 1 point2 points ago

Well to be fair she would have been likely less than 5 when it happened? It's also a very rarely discussed historical event nowadays, even inside the technology field. I personally haven't heard it mentioned in years.

They could use a zip disc, mini disc, laser disc, honestly there is so much dead technology.

[–]shazbotter 165 points166 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

laser disc

They're trying to target a technology that most people 18 and older recognize, not a technology that one guy used in his basement during the 70s.

We used laserdisk when I was in school, it was a public school to so I imagine I wasn't the only one. Then again I'm 27. Now asking a 18 year old to identify a Betamax tape, that's obscure.

[–]sandrakarr 5 points6 points ago

My science teachers tried to use them (key words: 'tried to') instead of plain ol videos. No one could get the things to work right and so much time was spent trying to figure it out.

[–]anthony955 2 points3 points ago

Haha, yeah. Some of ours just opted for the projectors or those old slideshow projector things. I feel really old actually seeing VHS implemented into classrooms. Laserdisk was interesting though, it operated almost exactly like a DVD in that it had menus and such.

I'm in college currently and my History teacher had a TV on a cart with a VCR at the bottom.

She popped in a VHS cassette about the Gettysburg Address a few weeks ago and the distortion was awful. That cassette had to be at least as old as I am.

The cool thing about laserdisks is that (except for audio on 'newer' disks) it's all analogue, pretty much directly mapping the composite signal onto optical tracks.

So if you have a spot on the disk, you will see funny lines, colours etc., similar (but different) from a bad aerial signal.

Hhm, I guess you kids don't even know what is a TV aerial, how can I explain this. You know, like when your mum takes the hook off the phone while you're downloading a GIF.. err.. I know, as the black dots you get when there's rain falling on the satellite dish.. Or.. when your dad is showing those films of you as a baby, and the picture starts rolling because the projector.. args!

Same here. There were tapes of some Hawaiian professor teaching his class, in which there were plenty of demonstrations, and I think a copy of old scientific demonstrations.

I bet the school felt silly about that investment, but at least it came to some use.

I watched Of Mice And Men on laserdisk in public school when i was a kid. We had to switch the disks like 4 times. It was my one and only encounter with the technology.

I'm 26 and have never laid eyes on any laserdisk system. I always heard someone's friend's neighbor's uncle had one, but yea, they were most definitely not widespread.

Yes, we used laserdiscs when I was in elementary school and as recently as last year. And every teacher has always had a fit trying to scan the barcodes.

[–]gigashadowwolf 14 points15 points ago

that one guy used in his basement during the 70s.

Laserdiscs were fucking awesome you tool.

They came out AFTER VHS tapes. They may have come out in the 78 but they weren't even called laserdiscs until 83 and were not at their peak popularity until the early 90s. They were the pre-curser to DVDs and CDs but the data was uncompressed. In many ways they were superior to DVDs.

TLDR; I'm a guy who was born in 87 but lived in my basement watching Totoro, Dick Tracy, and Edward Scissor Hands on my laserdisc player in my basement in the 70s.

TLDR WAS TLDR; Snap into a Slim Jim.

This I can attest to, T2 was awesome on laserdisk. I watched it in my friend's living room in 2006 and it felt like I was in a basement in the 70's.

95% of k-12 schools probably still regularly use it. Plenty of families still have VHS collections.

The image slightly confuses me. Along with showing the VHS, it also says "To proceed, enter your age". So I'm guessing you don't need to type in "VHS", and you can just type in any number 18 or greater?

Last summer, i took a job in a tutoring center for elementary school kids. One of the things i had to do was put on the movie they want to watch during their movie day. One day, the dvd player wasnt working and I noticed there was also a vcr player hooked up to the tv. I found a the VHS version of Charlie and the Chocolate factory. I popped it in and started rewinding it back to the beginning. Suddenly, i hear the kiddies going "WHAT ARE YOU DOING, JUST PLAY IT". It was then i started to feel old.

I was watching the first episode of X-men today with my little brother. When the parents of Jubilee said "look what she did to the VCR!", I had to explain to my brother just what a VCR was.

Today was the first day I felt old...

My favorite question from Leisure Suit Larry:

The term "Working Girl" refers to

a. a secretary.

b. a lady of negotiable virtue.

c. an industrious woman.

d. an employed female.

Correct answer: b.
