I found this to be very interesting. It shows how the things that were once beyond value can become worthless and left to the elements to dissolve.

This book is a good read if you are interested in this subject.

These things always remind me of George Carlin's bit about the earth being fine, we are the ones that are fucked. The earth just wanted us for plastic.

I've been to that one in Amalfi. Unfortunately I was hiking through those trails in the middle of January when they apparently don't upkeep them at all, so I ended up getting completely lost in the woods for a few hours and got to hang out with some mountain goats.

[–]B00Mgoesthedynamite 8 points9 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The difference, however, is that in the first two pictures, the abandoned buildings have been naturally overcome by vegetation over tens of years. The trees at the top of Tower Guinigi were planted there by humans.

This does not take away from Guinigi's beauty or serenity. Standing at the top is that tower was one of the most peaceful moments of my life. Lucca is an incredible town. Visit if you are able.

[–]Space-Dementia 131 points132 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Only one entrance bridge by the looks of it. Unless they learn how to abseil (scary thought). Also, this has a fresh supply of water, which is a pretty good bonus for a siege situation. I'm not sure, I might prefer to have this place than the fortress.

Edit: Someone make a 2fort map with this and the fortress. I am disabled through a laziness/low-attention-span gene, so if someone else could do this that would be swell.

[–]kittybear 202 points203 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Abseiling - Rappelling - from German: abseilen meaning "to rope down"

(so no one else has to google it and feel stupid)

[–]Space-Dementia 61 points62 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Another UK/USA word difference to add to the list :)

[–]bebeschtroumph 22 points23 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Really? Having lived in both places and been active in the outdoors community in both, I've always thought it was used in both places. I know my dad says 'rappelling', but I always thought that was from his army days. I've heard some outdoors folk use it as well, but I thought I'd heard abseiling too...

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

All of my friends that rappel say rappelling. Both rock/outdoors types and indoor/urban environs. I feel like I've heard "abseil" before, but not frequently enough that it stuck.

[–]DrDPants 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, all of MY friends that abseil say abseiling. And my friends that rappel, they say abseiling too. Except I don't have any friends.

[–]bebeschtroumph 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When I climbed in NY, the people I climbed with said abseil, when I went in West Virginia, people used rappel. Almost all the whitewater kayakers I know use abseil, both in the US and the UK.

[–]Space-Dementia 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've never heard anyone here say rappelling over abseiling. It's a known word to everyone, but abseiling is, from my experience, the choice word. I haven't done any climbing in years, maybe times have changed.

[–]Konet 25 points26 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Opposite for me. I've never heard the word abseiling. Only rappelling

[–][deleted] 36 points37 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Unless they learn how to abseil

Well if they were the "fast" type of running zombie, and they were on the upper cliff, couldn't they just run off the cliff and rain onto your fort? Since, they're undead, unless they sustain a head injury, they could get up or even crawl to still attack you. Once there were enough bodies stacked up, they might even land fully intact. I'm assuming zombified flesh would make a pretty squishy/gooey cushion to land on.

I'm not sold on this as good anti-zombie-apocolypse real estate.

[–]BeMoreCareful 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have to agree, best case scenario is the fast zombie rotting corpses contaminate the water.

If they were slow... there could be a chance. I think I'd still go for the high ground.

[–]arbuthnot-lane 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wouldn't a large enough crowd of zombies just fill up the moat after a while? Perhaps this could be avoided by having a supply of oil and torches ready for making the moat in a fire pit, but then the water supply would be contaminated.
It ain't easy being zombie killah.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How?

[–]snottlebocket 19 points20 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The geste of it is that you blur parts of the image. Tilt shift tends to have a very specific focus, anything closer or more distant blurs.

Photoshop tiltshift usually uses some kind of gradient mask to go from blur > crisp > blur along a direction. It tends to work best with images taken from a high angle because the indiscriminately applied mask actually has some semblance of proper out of focus area's that way.

[–]ElencherMind 10 points11 points ago

Upvoted for your efforts in explaining this technique but the word you want is "gist", not "geste"; geste is real word but something completely different. (Also: "areas".)

I think it's awesome that there's a rocky ravine with a 150-year-old mill slowly eroding under greenery, right in the middle of downtown Sorrento. It makes me look at local history (which barely goes back 150 years) in a new light. :D

[–]DRUG_USER 26 points27 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you visit Rome, the city is entirely this. It's kind of cool, my main bus stop going to school was next to this pit that held the ruins of part of the forum. The old city is about 20ft below the new one, so they just open up areas for viewing.

[–]naughtybanana 2 points3 points ago

they don't really do it justice i think. when i visited i was amazed at how high up everything in town was in comparison to the mill. this photo sort of captures that better: http://i53.tinypic.com/ncm3jm.jpg

Sorrento is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. The whole town is like this; most buildings have been there for ages and there's vines and other flora everywhere. The city backs up to a spectacular circular bay where there are buildings on the cliffs that seem to be melted into them. I highly suggest visiting, as it's not exactly a tourist trap.

I went to Sorrento (and most everywhere in Italy) about 6 years ago for my junior/senior class trip. That place is scary as fuck when you have a bus driver maneuvering up the side of a cliff like a boss, on a two-way road that's barely bigger than the width of one American street's single lane.

[–]fernweh 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

yeah been on a guided bus tour of Italy too- those bus drivers have skillz!

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points ago

Props to the shuttle drivers that take you downhill to the ferries for Capri, too. They fucking zig-zag down a staircase-shaped road at a million KPH, drifting like they're auditioning for a Fast and Furious movie. All the while, the shuttle is crammed full of Americans standing ass-to-ass yelling "OMG we're going to die!!!"

Better than any roller coaster.

Holy shit Sorrento was terrifying with the bus driver. He's such a pimp. I remember he was a baby-face Italian with blue eyes and a big ass gold chain. He'd go through the streets of Sorrento without a problem when there was but 2 inches of clearance on each side.

Sorrento and Positano are two of the most beautiful places I've ever been in my entire life. I remember swimming in the Mediterranean at Positano and looking up at the mountain range that slopes directly into the sea, and there were all these little fish gently nibbling at the edges of my toes. I got dressed and ate an enormous order of the best pasta I've had in my life and hopped on a rickety bus back to civilization and eventually Rome. The entire Amalfi coast is magnificent. I want to go back again.

Interesting factoid: Beneath that mill lies the entrance to a gloomy 19th century laboratory where an insane doctor, in his sick quest for immortality, performed twisted and forbidden experiments on the freshly dead (mostly on them, yes - although he is believed to sometimes have tried to revitalise them with the lifeforce of innocent children who, unsurprisingly, did not survive the procedure).
The local authorities walled off the entrance to that abominable place after finding out. What they had found was so beyond horrible, that they did not even bother checking for survivors. Rumour has it that sometimes at night you can hear the screams of the doctor's victims, tormented and now thoroughly wicked souls, as they are searching for an exit in order to come forth and quell their thirst for vengeance against this, our civilization, which had let that happen to them.
Creepily, Sorrento and its surroundings are also the place with the highest rate of sudden infant death syndrome in Europe (and possibly the world).

I stood right where that photo was taken when I was about 8 years old, seeing this just gave me the biggest wtf I have ever felt.

Always wondered what it was, the photo is taken from road level so it's really disconcerting seeing how low it is.

Can't believe I just saw this, sweet sweet memories of family holidays.

We have a similar abandoned mill here in my area.

http://www.treyhaun.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/sweetwater-creek-panorama.jpg

Unfortunately, both of these places would be terrible ideas for zombie fortresses. Littered with gaps to the outside, no real floors, and what wood still exists will be a crumbling death trap.

Great post OP. Quite a few people in this thread have been to Sorrento, which is cool. Sorrento, the island of Capri and the Amalfi Coast are all seriously beautiful places. Plus you have Pompeii and Herculaneum nearby. Worth a visit and not just because of the cool abandoned mine.

One of the things that amused me about Sorrento were the mopeds. They were nuts.

Cars overtake mopeds

Mopeds overtake cars

Mopeds overtake coaches

Mopeds overtake the police

The police are taking it so easy the guy driving nearly puts the car up the kerb.
