Yeah. I'm not quite sure I'm getting the point of this graphic. Africa is the second largest continent, being much smaller than Asia and slightly larger than North America.

Is this really all that controversial or important? Is it even interesting?

I mean, we all have seen globes, haven't we? Maybe rather than twisting china sideways and stuffing it inside of a map of Africa, we should just look at a goddamn globe to see how big things are.

[–]Delmier776 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There actually is controversy because of how different map projections show land mass size.

Mercator projection vs Galls-Peters projection

[–]SSChicken 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

None of this applies to globes, though, and that's what Nixon was regarding specifically. He does have an edit, so if he originally said maps then you may carry on!

[–]yupko 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The Gall-Peters projection is just as horribly distorted as Mercator, but in a different way.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Go on...

[–]yupko 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

While Mercator hugely enlarges northern areas of the Northern hemisphere and far Southern hemisphere, Gall-Peters does so near the equator and up to the tropics. While Greenland, Antarctica, and Russia are cartoonishly large in Mercator, Africa, South America, and the Indonesian islands are cartoonishly tall in Gall-Peters.

Not really misleading though, since the giant map makes it very clear that they are talking about the contiguous USA. However, the table on the left should probably be clarified.

The point was to give perspective on the size of Africa by comparing it to well-known geographic references. As many people fail to realize how big Alaska is, it would have been detrimental to the exercise to include it. Therefore, you're a faggot.

Look at North America alone, Canada is frigging huge.

[–]Astrokiwi 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Canada's only a little larger than the US.

Seriously! The mercator projection makes it look huge, but Canada is only like 4% larger than the US. Canada, the US, China, Brazil, and Australia are all similar in size (Australia is the smallest of those, at about 80% of the area of the US), with Russia 70% bigger than Canada.

Who said it was a country?

[–]Momentstealer 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The comparison chart is all of Africa vs a whole bunch of countries (with the exception of Europe). The text on the chart is also referring to children being quizzed on the population of their "country". The list on the right hand size is also comparing countries. There happens to be 54 countries in Africa.

Since Africa is the second largest continent, why not compare continent size?

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It seems we're be misunderstanding each other. The text beneath the chart argues we should notice geographical ignorance. One aspect of that ignorance is misjudgment of Africa's size. Another is how large one country is compared to another. To illustrate the former point, the poster crams three huge countries into Africa. This still leaves room for other big countries. Nowhere does it say Africa is a country.

[–]Ynotdude 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The issue is the map compares large countries to an entire continent, which is a bit like comparing an apple to a barrel of apples. Clearly you're going to be able to fit lots of countries in a continent.

Rather than comparing the size of respective continents, which would make more sense, they compared many different countries with a continent. If, for example they had tried to fit continents in Africa they would have a much more difficult time:

  1. Asia - 17,139,445 square miles (44,391,162 square km)
  2. Africa - 11,677,239 square miles (30,244,049 square km)
  3. North America - 9,361,791 square miles (24,247,039 square km)
  4. South America - 6,880,706 square miles (17,821,029 square km)
  5. Antarctica - 5,500,000 square miles (14,245,000 square km)
  6. Europe - 3,997,929 square miles (10,354,636 square km)
  7. Australia - 2,967,909 square miles (7,686,884 square km)

[–]Calsendon 6 points7 points ago

The creator used countries because most people are more aware of the size of their own countries.

[–]Ynotdude 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wouldn't comparing the size of some of the larger countries in Africa to those they're more aware make more sense then?

[–]Calsendon 1 point2 points ago

Because the people this article is referring to would recognize very few, if any, African countries.

It doesn't matter. The way almost all maps are drawn Africa's size is lowered.

[–]Thieves_MacGyver 25 points26 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It is not that the size of Africa is lowered, it is because of its location on the equator. On most maps, the only geography to proper scale is on the equator, and everything else is stretched to keep the longitude lines parallel. The effect is the same, that Africa looks smaller in relation to other regions, and that Greenland (for example) looks fucking huge.

I don't understand why circle-jerking over Africa's surface area became an African nationalist meme. If anything, it brings its failure to achieve much of anything into keener focus; Europe is so much smaller, but so much wealthier, despite clearly having far fewer natural resources.

I mean, yes, there are good reasons for this, but if you're going for brainless self-congratulating, it seems to me there are better things to focus on.

[–]Volksgrenadier 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

To be perfectly fair, while Africa has a wealth of mineral deposits, it was unfortunately not gifted with an easily accessible abundance of the coal and iron that allowed for such an easy, self-sustaining Industrial Revolution in Europe.

[–]yellowstone10 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And as everyone knows, you want to build your first camp near a source of coal, so that you can craft torches and keep the zombies away.

[–]GoatBased 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The number of "resources" doesn't matter, what matters is what those resources are. For example, coal and iron are extremely important resources and have been since the industrial revolution.

Aside from South Africa there isn't a lot of coal in Africa. Again, aside from South Africa and a few northern African countries, there isn't a lot of iron.

Europe has a -huge- advantage in terms of living conditions - temperate weather, no droughts, fewer diseases etc.

[–]Volksgrenadier 5 points6 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not really, no. By the time the "Rush for Africa" occurred, Europe was by far the most affluent area of the world. It could be argued that the slave trade was responsible for much of Europe's economic prosperity, but by and large the Industrial Revolution which made that prosperity possible flowed from England, and England's wealth and power flowed from the millions of oppressed Indians rather than Africans.

[–]abadgaem 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

How is this brainless self-congratulation? It's simply an infographic dispelling misconceptions about the size of Africa.

Anyways, you should read Guns, Germs, and Steel to get an understanding for sub-Saharan underdevelopment relative to Europe. Most landlocked countries, lack of navigable rivers criss-crossing inland like in Europe, mostly non-temperate zones, lacking in seasons that kill parasites and diseases, etc.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes. I felt sharing this obvious proof of douchebaggery. I will most likely be downvoting everything by OP from now on.

A poster on a library wall at BU looks like this. It fits China, the United States, and Europe into Africa. It's easy to forget how much a map affects how you think of the world.

[–]dooglies 7 points8 points ago

Asia fits China, Russia, AND India. I think it's clear what the superior continent is.

Asia knows that it is the biggest and therefore does not have to run around telling everybody how endowed it is. Asia drives a sensible car and dresses modestly. Africa on the other hand drives a donk with 24" blades with music blaring at top volume and wears expensive clothes and jewelry it can't afford.

What's the point of this 'map'? How about a 'map' of Asia (or even China by itself) and how many African countries can fit in it?

Africa is a continent with a plethora of very distinct countries, not some homogeneous landmass where everyone speaks "African".

[–]no1113 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Uh, while I'm not vouching for the accuracy of this map (I don't know one way or the other), didn't/don't you see the big, red, orange, and yellow blotches inside Africa with the words China, Japan, and India on them?

That seems to cover literally the entirety of Asia doesn't it?

Learned this as a footnote in high school. Personally I wish more people realized this and was represented on maps and globes. Might help give people a better perspective in how they view the world (figuratively and literally).

[–]Blacksheep01 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This map is uninteresting. What I really want to know is, how many Rhode Islands (my home state and an official unit of measure) fit inside Africa? Because that is always really impressive. Like "that lake is the size of Rhode Island" or "That meteor is the size of Rhode Island." Conversely, you can also say "50,000 Rhode Islands fit in Alaska" and that just sounds awesome. So what is it Africa? 20 million Rhode Islands? 40 billion? We all must know because...uhhh.....it will help save...errrr.....Africa?

[–]JMB-CAL 0 points1 point ago

Why does size matter?

[–]mickey_kneecaps 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is stupid. Only idiots think that Africa is small, and while it is a nice sentiment to try and correct the misconception, the images of countries that have been fitted for this image are also distorted and misshapen. There is no map projection that will perfectly convey the relative sizes and positions of countries (or the general geography of the world). Luckily, there is an easy solution to this problem: buy a fucking globe.

Holy butthurt Irishman. Approximately no fucks would be given if it included the US as a part of Russia, besides a few people questioning how that could possibly even happen.

[–]shillbert 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's a bad metaphor; America and Russia are nowhere near each other. It's more like if Alaska were put in as part of Canada.

[–]quadtodfodder 1 point2 points ago

'cause the map is about land masses, not political bounds (see other similar threads here)

[–]Thieves_MacGyver 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They are right next to each other, and form a convenient visual mass to scale other things against. So there is one "fucking way" that they are associated. But I totally understand the annoyance....if it is any comfort, this was probably made by and an ignorant fuck from a country that you don't know all the geographic/political details of either...........granted now that I look at it more, I am starting to get annoyed by the fact that they could have just labeled it right like they did with everything else....

[–]thinkingperson 0 points1 point ago

upboated. Though I would use the example of putting Canada together as part of US.

[–]PMan1 -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't know why you're getting downvoted either, seems reasonable to expect that a cartographer would know something about, you know, geography. Sticking Ireland and the UK together and calling it the UK make no sense.

I'm not even going to think what the Alaskans think about being left out of the US. Not the first time I'd say.
