Not too long after that happened the same keeper made another terrible mistake and was so embarrassed that he ran off the pitch and substituted himself.

One of the YouTube commenters raises a good point. You see the stands with the blue seats in the video and there are no people to be seen, but you can clearly hear them in the audio.

[–]an800lbgorilla 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If a game isn't anywhere near being sold out, they often limit seats to one section or a few sections in order to help with the atmosphere. So there might still be a thousand or a few thousand people. but that section is not being used.

One of the top-rated comments on that video is basically Joke Explainer:

What's up with the super loud crowd noise? I don't see a single person in the stands.

[–]reverend_dan 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sports programmes often overdub noise to heighten emotion.

I'm not sure about football, but all broadcasted horse racing has the noise of galloping hooves overdubbed. It's obviously impossible to close-mic the ground all the way around a long track so they play an old library track of stampeding bison.

Another case in point - long distance skiing. There's a guy with a keyboard and a sample of a 'swish' noise who plays over any closeups.

To be fair, with a lot of sports they mic things sensitively and cleverly to make it sound exciting and complement the visuals, but when it's impossible, they cheat.

[–]jforeman1988 17 points18 points ago

This 100% because I want to see his reaction when he realises it has gone into the goal.

Not to say this isn't hilarious but the title very much implied we were going to see the goalie's reaction when the thought "What do you mean he scored?" Went through his head.

For the life of me I can't understand why animated gifs even exist. I've never once seen one that was both worthwhile and better in gif format than video.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, the one useful thing I can think of about .Gifs is that they automatically loop. That can be exploitable in some fun ways. However, people probably use them on Reddit because EVERYONE clicks on imgur links.

[–]stoicsmile 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think they are a relic from olden days when it took forever to load videos. So just cut out the part of the video you think is important, remove sound, and put it on a loop.

[–]Rhomboid 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That doesn't really make sense because GIFs actually take more bandwidth than video due to their terrible compression.

The reason they're still around is because they can be posted in places where you cannot embed video, such as forums and message boards. Sure, you can link to a youtube clip but an animated GIF is more lively as it's right there in the flow of text with nothing to click on.

[–]QuerulousPanda 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've found in the last few years that animated gifs always load really, really, really slowly and have all sorts of problems actually playing in any reasonable period of time.

[–]junkit33 -1 points0 points ago

[–]shadow1515 -1 points0 points ago

For similar reasons that paintings still exist, even though we have photography. It's a different medium.

[–]junkit33 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That makes no sense. Paints are completely different from photographs, and serve completely different purposes. Gifs are just a lesser experience of the exact same thing as a video.

it was Penalty Shootouts. if it were a penalty shot during the middle of the game then the player could have fun up and kicked the ball in, not that he needed to anyway.

[–]rmachenw 1 point2 points ago

It may be out of play if the referee called the kick completed. The ball can be out of play by crossing the line or by the referee's whistle.

[–]tandeg 129 points130 points ago

Actual soccer referee to the rescue: It would also be out of play if the keeper punched the ball over the touchline. However, this is from a penalty shootout (the kind you have after overtime in a knock-out competion [cup] if the score is still level) so he wouldn't even need to punch it over the line, just away from goal. He did not manage to do that, so the goal was allowed.

Also, if memory serves, this happened nearly a year ago. I think it was in either the Algerian or the Tunisian cup, though my memory is a little foggy on that. EDIT: Looked it up, and apparently is was Morocco, so I was pretty close.

Actually, we do get thanked fairly often (note: I'm not a soccer ref, just football and baseball). While some coaches are a PITA, most understand that we aren't incompetent, and that we aren't trying to screw over anyone. Parents on the other hand can go fuck themselves (seriously, coaches are normally great, parents can be complete assholes).

[–]oldmanrain 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's good to hear. I don't follow a lot of American sports (although the super bowl is the shit) but all I ever hear is "the referee's a wanker"

[–]yoda133113 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You have to remember, the higher the level, the less forgiveness for fucking up. Also, the more anger for it as well. When you're getting $35-70 a game, it's somewhat acceptable to not be perfect, when you're getting paid multiple thousands per game, it's not.

[–]tandeg 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Still, criticism of referees is at an unacceptable level in the top leagues. For instance, Mark Clattenburg is in my opinion the best referee in the EPL, yet he has still received massive criticism in recent years. After a Merseyside derby in 2007 he was suspended for one round, and has never since refereed an Everton match. It's no wonder he criticized the FA for not protecting referees and threatened to retire.

[–]tubadeedoo 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So true! I only got yelled at by a coach once, but I would get screamed at by parents every fourth game or so. When I go to my sister's games I tell a rather vocal family to shut up regularly as they are not certified referees.

I use to do spring leagues in high school. Awesome job that pays you a ton of money for that age. Tournaments were a great time too - tons of games, good money, and free food from the concession stands if you were a ref.

tl;dr Refereeing soccer is a great job if you don't mind seeing people get angry for the smallest stuff.

Mostly 3rd and 4th division in Norway. These are regional leagues, and where I live (up north) teams are very spread out. Since I'm fairly young and mostly an assistant referee (linesman), I usually catch a ride from whoever is the main ref, and still get additional pay for travelling expenses. Meaning I'm very well paid compared to the hours I put into it.

People from northern Norway are known throughout the rest of the country for always speaking their mind and especially for swearing a lot, so I've heard my fair share of expletives. I remember once I was on the line in a match where the reserve team of my best local team was playing (at the time their first team was in the top league, though later they were relegated). Their current first-choice keeper played the entire match (as well as several other first team players). He is from even further up north, and was the embodiment of this northern personality. He would yell and curse from the other end of the pitch throughout the entire match. During the break I asked him jokingly if he really thought he could see better than us from the other end of the pitch to which he just smiled and said something along the lines of "Of course I can". I kind of liked that guy, even though he sucks in goal. He should have stayed in the 3rd division.

Upvote! I loved being a referee in HS. I made about 20 dollars a game, and since I reffed the younger age groups, games were only about 40 minutes to an hour. I'd do about 5 to 7 games a weekend, and more during tournaments.

Everything about that job was a blast. I even enjoyed the parents yelling at me, as they so often did.

[–]strife25 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was exactly like you. I personally enjoyed seeing the parents get crazy angry because it gave me something to do during the little kid games. With the higher levels, you had the best seat in the house to see the game.

Just a little confused. I was watching Luton v AFC Wimbledon today spoiler warning just in case ...
...
...
...
...
...
and there was a penalty during the shoot-out that got knocked straight into the air. The keeper made an effort to stop it and the commentator mentioned this was unnecessary as he had "stopped the initial penalty". Is the idea just that he had pushed it away from goal?

[–]tandeg 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I haven't seen the situation, but if he knocked it straight up and it had went into the goal, his touch on the ball would have only been a deflection, not a save. Honestly, many commentators don't have a lot of knowledge when it comes to refereeing. I often think their employers should make them take a refereeing class.

The goalie can only take a ball out of play by taking the ball outside of the field of play. Holding it still keeps the ball in play, it's just a little tricky to get the ball off a keeper without a foul with your feet.

The shootout just prevents the an attacking player from getting the ball and having another go, it's a one shot chance. Technically the ball is still in play after the keeper has stopped it, it's just that the attacking player(s) (shooter) can't take advantage of a rebound in this specific situation.

Edit: Last paragraph.

[–]saltshaker23 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I can see how you would think it's still in play since everyone generally clears away from the goalie once he picks up the ball. But they don't clear away because the ball is "out of play", they clear away because:

Holding it still keeps the ball in play, it's just a little tricky to get the ball off a keeper without a foul with your feet.

Usually taking off down the field to meet up with the ball after the goalie kicks it is going to give you a better chance of regaining possession than trying to get it back from the goalie (without fouling) is, so players take that route.

You wouldn't see him doing that unless the ball was in fact out of play, past the goal line. In which case that's what you do.

[–]TheForeignMan 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, when the goalie 'puts down the ball at the corner of his crease' it's because the ball HAS gone out of play.
If the goalie has it in his hands (ie he's caught the ball) then he kicks it out of his hands. The ball never leaves play.
If the ball goes out behind the goal (and it was the attacking team which kicked it out) then the goalie would put it on the floor for a goal kick - the other team wouldn't be allowed within 18yards of the goal in this case.

[–]saltshaker23 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think(?) the situation he was talking about is that the goalie caught the ball, ran to the crease corner, put it down, and kicked it. As far as I remember that's legal? I don't know why a goalie would do that instead of just punting it, but you never know. Everything you said is definitely true though, if I'm wrong about the situation he's talking about.

[–]flatcoke 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

see this.

However, if the ball went out of bound, or if it was an offside close to the goalie, the play is stopped, and the goalie is supposed to make a similiar kick, but nobody is allowed to touch it.

[–]FuckThe 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, it's legal just like Snarf stated.

Also, any decent goalie should know to never take their eyes off the ball until you have seen it go out of play.

[–]kosmopolska 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

From the laws of the game, law 14 (the penalty kick): "A goal is awarded if, before passing between the goalposts and under the crossbar: the ball touches either or both of the goalposts and/or the crossbar and/or the goalkeeper. The referee decides when a penalty kick has been completed", meaning that although the keeper touched the ball, the penalty kick was not completed and a goal should be awarded.

Anything counts. Hell they have an entire category called own goals. So awesome since in Soccer each and every point matters, not because it is tightening up loose ends, but because it is the only point. I think in the game result they actually show it as an own goal along with the scorer name. Here enjoy: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5879759145636232499#

I'm pretty sure this isn't considered an own goal though. The keeper has special exemption since it is expected that the keeper will be touching the ball before it goes into the goal. On the other hand any other player inadvertently touching the ball is considered an own goal.

You know where this video would be useful. Physics textbooks. Nobody gets angular momentum in high school/early college physics. Give them this goal, have them solve the equations for how this actually happens, and we'll turn half a dozen kinesiology majors into astrophysicists.

It is a bit tricky to call since it was not a regular penalty kick. During the regular time, when a penalty kick is taken, its a live ball until the keeper catches it, ball goes out of bounds or ball goes in the goal. Also, the other players are there and can immediately go for the ball if ball was touched by the keep or hit the post. Now this took place during penalty shootouts which is exactly like hockey, its just you and the keeper, and you cant go for the ball again if the keeper touched it. In hockey, keeper saves it, ball is dead, in soccer its pretty much the same rule. 99,99 % of cases keeper saves it, ball is either out of play or just gets pushed somewhere in the box...however this was a troll ball. You can see the troll face on the ball if you zoom in. Scum bag ball: keeper saves the penalty, ball still goes in.

My take: a slightly elaborate deflection.

[–]greginnj 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Why is no one giving credit to the kicker? He gave it all his power, at just the right height to also give the ball incredible topspin. Topspin would have helped even if it was just a normal deflection off the hands, but in this case it was crucial.

With less power, or less topspin, this would have been a save. The guy applied his tactical skills and managed to score; he deserves credit.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There's no way that's a good penalty. Strait down the middle, along the ground, not even a huge amount of power (he side footed it).

Those are the penalties that get saved most of the time because the goalkeeper doesn't have to move to save them. Heck even if he dove left or right, he'd still stand a good chance of saving it.

It was only a goal because the goalkeeper was careless, managers certainly wouldn't want their players to take penalties in that way.

I was thinking about this. I mean he was freaking showboating! He totally blocked it, then it rolled into the goal, oh well! The ref might have made a bad call.

According to soccer rules, the player must be lynched in the parking lot by the fans, strung up and crucified, then they must hunt down his family and kill them too. Then the crowd must riot in the streets for 3 days causing civil unrest, fires, and total economic devastation to whatever city where the match was held.

It looks as if this is a penalty shoot out to determine what team wins a trophy or proceeds to the next round of the competition, after the match being a draw.

I always assumed in a penalty shoot out situation that once a keeper blocks the initial shot that it's classed as a save which obviously the keeper did too.

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's not arrogance, it's sheer relief bringing out that reaction from the goalkeeper. Try watching a penalty shootout, they're unbelievably tense, whole competitions riding on single kicks.

Similar thing happened to me one time. It was during shootouts and I dove for the ball and I knocked it to the side, but it had backspin and went in. Only difference was I couldn't get off the ground in time to stop it from going in the goal.

Although "football" (or "association football" if you're not into the whole brevity thing) has of course always been used in official contexts, I recall reading that it wasn't until recent years that British folk would make fun of Americans calling the sport "soccer," and that it was common for people in conversation or on sports broadcasts to refer to it as "soccer" in a slangy way. I believe that came from the excellent book Soccernomics, but if it's not that I'm sure I've read it somewhere.
