Looks to me like they may have used a ring flash. It's literally just what it sounds like, a ring of lights. It provides light from every angle when taken so close to the face.

It's not a ring light though. It is two rectangular lights, one on each side of the face. The catchlights from a ringlight are circular like a cheerio, not two rectangles.

Martin Scholler. His typical setup is two soft boxes, left and right with the camera lens right between them, and a beauty dish up top, and a big card under the chin. Same basic concept as a ring light, but no shadows anywhere.

Pretty much, none of them (with the exception of Nicholson perhaps) are drama queens, and they would probably just get along and be fairly normal. It would be interesting for sure, but I couldn't see any of the "drama" that reality TV thrives on coming out of it.

I see a lot of discussion for how this look is achieved so I'm going to explain it from first hand experience. I was an assistant for Martin Schoeller when he was in Cleveland, OH shooting Lebron James for ESPN Magazine. It was roughly around late 2006/early 2007 (I would have to dig in my file cabinet to find my invoice to him to get the exact date).

How it is done: The set up is not softboxes. What they are is Kino Flo lights. Similar to these models here. They are turned vertical, taller than they are wider, on the left and right of the subject. The subject then stands in a box like structure that is made form black foam core that is open in front of (obviously) and behind the subject. About 10 to 15 feet behind the subject is the background, that is then lit with traditional strobes, the day I worked with him to was ProFoto's. The backdrop is also placed in a box similar to the subject... all of this is done to keep most of the ambient light from effecting the overall color temp of the entire image, since both the kino flo's and the background strobes are rated around 5500K.

He then shot them with film using a Hassleblad body with a longer lens.

I would also like to mention that working with Mr. Schoeller was a great experience and he is a really nice guy. That one long day did a lot in me learning about lighting and how to interact with subjects.

It is why he does what he does. He can't actually see the face in three-dimensional space, but when flattened he can understand it. I believe he said in an interview that the face appears like a landscape with certain physical characteristics. But to put it all together is impossible. Just to tilt the head slightly is to present an entirely new landscape. I think in a way he was "mapping" the faces in his portraits.

Also I printed for a guy who was working at this print shop. Chuck Close had commissioned them to make these gigantic 150+ run silkscreens (big fucking deal to make those). My buddy told me about how pissed off he'd get that Close never knew who the fuck he was, even when he saw him every day. Now it makes sense.
