well.. there are several episodes where the children are addressed by the parents and angelica is not there... so while this interpretation is interesting and would make a really sick remake of the series.. I doubt it holds to the majority of episodes.

Not to mention the entire 'All grown up' spin off.

[–]Horatio_Hornblower 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Is that any good? I mean, obviously neither of us is going to watching it ourselves, but I mean, as far as being quality children's programming like the original, does that sequel hold up? I fear that it will give in to the sexualization of programming for pre-teens, in Bratz style.

Nostalgia and heroin have a lot in common.

[–]preludeoflight 18 points19 points ago

[–]tomrhod 31 points32 points ago

My friend got married to a former high school sweetheart because of nostalgia, he's now getting a divorce and selling his house while paying her alimony every month.

So I agree, heroin is cheaper.

[–]Maxjes 8 points9 points ago

Have you seen the prices on those DVD box sets?

Nostalgia, not even once.

Dil? I kinda liked Dil. I also thought the movie was pretty badass, I was ALSO excited that Charles had found love once again. You know you loved Kimi! : )

...Bratz style sexualization has nothing to do with age.

[–]Horatio_Hornblower 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't know, I have a daughter and am very aware of the problem, and I believe I see it being used to market more toward 10 year-old children than 4 year-old children. The point is moot though. It's evil, across the board, and unforgivable.

[–]Hindu_Wardrobe 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I thought it was okay, but then again I watched it when I was like 10, so if I watched it now I'd probably think otherwise.

[–]danny841 4 points5 points ago*

The very first episode Kimi and Lil have a threesome with Tommy. Later Chuckie comes out of the closet and tries to commit suicide. Meanwhile we learn Angelica has been stealing prescription meds from her parents for years. She tries to get Suzzie to experiment with them and eventually succeeds. Suzzie loses the race for class president because she nearly dies from an overdose. She becomes angry with Angelica and vows to bring her down.

Holy shit this would be awesome. Brb writing fanfic.

[–]venuswasaflytrap 1 point2 points ago

I've seen it like twice, it was mostly about tongue in cheek preteen problems, like having the right shirt or who was going to what party. It was okay I guess

I'm not really up to speed on this cartoon any more but just because they are addressed by the parents doesn't prove anything does it? The parental interaction could also be a part of the hallucination? I'm thinking of it from a fight club point of view.

[–]Joon01 42 points43 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sure. But the idea behind these "conspiracies," or reinterpretations to use an apt word, are that they're applicable and makes sense. If the theory is just "hallucinations, everyone, always" it's devoid of meaning. There needs to be some sense to it, some evidence.

This theory could literally apply to any series ever.

Everyone on Family Guy except for, uh, Lois is dead. When they were making out in the road as teenagers, Peter actually got hit by the truck. So her mind broke and she made everything up to cope. OMG, crazy!

Everyone on Cheers drank themselves to death. The show Frasier was Frasier imagining a happy life instead of having all of his friends dead from alcohol abuse which he, as a psychiatrist, feels partly responsible for never stopping.

There's nothing at all to say why this Rugrats thing would be true. Which is the part that matters.

[–]inyouraeroplane 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Everyone on Family Guy except for, uh, Lois is dead. When they were making out in the road as teenagers, Peter actually got hit by the truck. So her mind broke and she made everything up to cope. OMG, crazy!

Wrong! Brian's the only real thing on the show. He's currently deluded into thinking he's a dog, and he made up a family to take care of him and a baby to oppose him. Cleveland, Joe, and Quagmire are background characters. Meg is shunned because she's the last girlfriend he had before going into this delusion. The Evil Monkey is his paranoid schizophrenia manifesting itself.

You watch, the last episode is going to show Seth MacFarlane in a straitjacket licking himself. Brian was always a puppet for his views, that's just how they back out of it.

[–]forum1388 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No the point he's making is that parent/baby interaction took place in episodes where Angelica was never even present. If they were still a hallucination than it wasnt Angelica's, and therefore proves this theory wrong.

[–]test_alpha 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Um, that doesn't prove it wrong. The whole theory is based around her imagination, and the viewer is seeing that imagination. Surely she can imagine things happening where she is not present.

[–]I_divided_by_0- 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Does not prove it wrong. What if those were dream sequences by Angelica?

[–]I_divided_by_0- 2 points3 points ago

[–]MyRealNameIsTwitch 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Or, it's a show about talking babies.

[–]bejayel 20 points21 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No it's not. The parents are not able to understand the babies. The babies understand each other as it's baby speak.

I think this theory stems from the fact that angelica is so much older than the babies, so it doesn't make sense why she can understand them and the parents can't.

[–]WarPhalange 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

"So much older'? She's a few years old and doesn't even go to school. She's right in between, which is why she can understand them.

[–]UEH 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't understand why Chuckie couldn't partially interact, seeing as while the rest of the babies were 1 he was 2 and Angelica was 3.

[–]WarPhalange 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Chuckie was slow to develop. He probably should have been saying his first words by then, but he was always a little bitch. Tommy probably started talking before Chuckie.

Dude, if you didn't figure out that Ms. Deville was a raging lesbian by the first episode you saw with her in it you must be blind AND ignorant. When she wasn't trying to recruit/fuck the other kids' moms she was busy busting the guys' balls and whining about the "patriarchy". She's a horrible stereotype of a butch dyke, but...I'm surprised there's anyone at all who DIDN'T figure that out.

[–]ireland1988 41 points42 points ago

Damn man, sorry I wasn't some latchkey kid with loads of wisdom on adult sexuality when I was younger. I always just viewed her as a strong woman, and the husband as a wuss, never as it being some weird hetero-homo-marriage. I was like, 10.

[–]rm01 19 points20 points ago

[–]Ad__Hominem 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, this isn't literary analysis, not by a long shot.

One thing people tend to ignore with literary analysis is the analysis part. The statements have to be based off of the presented work.

There's absolutely nothing available in the work to cause that assumption, so it's not literary analysis. Just conspiracy.

What about Suzy?

[–]LeonHRodriguez 61 points62 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The last time this conspiracy theory was posted, we came to the conclusion that Suzy and Angelica are the same entity - Suzy was the complete antithesis to Angelica, both in appearance and action

Angelica is a spoiled, annoying and cruel white girl that is a dyed-in-the-wool bully while Suzy is kind and respectful black girl who always stands up for the babies and is rewarded by the adults

Suzy only exists in Angelica's mind as sort of impossible, unreachable ideal that she wishes she could become but never will - remember how Suzy and Angelica always antagonized each other?

I am confused. Rugrats ran from '91-'04. Dil was introduced in 1998 which was only halfway into the run of the show and most "children of the 90s" would have still been children in the 90s unless 98 is no longer the 90s.

Peter Chung, creator/director of Aeon Flux was character designer/writer for a lot of the Rugrats stuff. So this whole conspiracy theory is pretty possible considering all the fucked up nonsense in Aeon Flux.

Then again, it was just a kids' show. Right...?

[–]twoworldsin1 2 points3 points ago

Actually when I was in high school, and also a pervert, I wrote a sex story where the parents were all secretly swingers, and when the babies went to bed they would put out the tarps and start filming these wild sex parties. Like...Stu would invent these fucked up sex toys for the women, Phil and Lil's mom would probably fuck every one of the other mom's, stuff like that. Crazy stuff, man.

I like my theory better, sorry.

For those of you who are going to past this to facebook.

The babies in Rugrats don't exist and are products of Angelica's imagination because her mother ignores her and her relationship with her father is shallow and parasitic. In reality, Chuckie died along with his mother, which is why Chaz is such a nervous wreck. Tommy was a stillborn, which causes Stu to sit in the basement making toys for his son that never had a chance to live, and the DeVilles had an abortion. Angelica coudn't decide whether the unborn child would be male or female and simply invented the same character in her head twice with different genders.

Nope. There is no basis for this in the cartoon. At least other ridiculous "deep" secret cartoon messages have SOME basis in the actual series. This is just making shit up.

you could make the same claim about any character in any show with the same validity. if anyone's ever read around IMDB message boards there's always one of these posts. This character wasn't real, the ending didn't actually happen, etc. no matter what, there's always someone who thinks he's so clever claiming the exact opposite of what happened in the movie or show happened.

That one was pretty crazy how much the "funeral altar" they used to compare looked like the cupcake.... too bad the pics aren't all working.

You know what? This stops right the fuck now. These theories were cool when they first started but now they are just getting annoying. Yes, there is examining a work for deeper meaning, then there is looking at a kid's show and trying to pin something on it that simply isn't true. It's like that damned pokemon theory where Ash is really in a coma and the show is all in his mind. Do the creators of kid's TV shows put something in for the older audience to spot? Yes. Do they go out with the intention that these crazy ass theories propose? No.

Angelica also talks with her barbie doll as if it's her real friend, so that's not surprising. Also, have you noticed how often she gets sucked into the illusions created by TOMMY'S imagination? This wouldn't happen unless it was all Angelica.

"I'm a psycho!"
