I once got "♁." Not even as PART of a word, just one of the words was ♁.

I thought it was the "Earth" symbol, a mark in various old religions.

[–]arlanTLDR 8 points9 points ago

It works regardless of what you enter. So it went well.

[–]smhxx 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, that's one thing I've never fully understood about reCAPTCHA. You only have to get one word right, you can type whatever the hell you want for the other one.

[–]arlanTLDR 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They use it as a way of crowdsourcing the transcribing of books. One word is the captcha, one word is scanned from a book. Sometimes the book was scanned upside down, or used symbols, and thats how we get captchas like this one.

[–]odd84 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If enough people type the same thing for the other word, they have reasonable confidence in the proper spelling of that word, and it can join the list of translated images.

[–]smhxx 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I understand the motivation behind it, it just seems like lowering the difficulty of the test makes it somewhat less bot-proof, which is of course the ultimate point of CAPTCHAs.

[–]odd84 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Bots don't know which of the words is the easy known one and which is the hard unknown one. They can be in either position.

Opened this and switched to a new tab while it was loading - came back and pressed "Continue".

Needless to say, I was quite confused for a few seconds.

[–]kerwen 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Captcha only needs 1 of the 2 words to be entered, usually the "normal" one, the other word doesn't matter as they are stored later as a base for text recognition conversion software. If you entered that it would've passed. Same with "amanks BLABLABLA" or something along those lines

[–]eyesofsaturn 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

THIS HAS BEEN DONE TO DEATH

[–]sltkr 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Obvious repost, since ReCAPTCHA nowadays adds some sort of drop-shadow behind their generated word.

(And for those that didn't know yet: ReCAPTCHA only checks the generated word; you can enter anything for the other word, and it will accept it.)

How in the hell do they expect regular users to be able to recreate some of the ridiculous symbols they use?

[–]ggggbabybabybaby 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They don't really. reCaptcha gives you two words, one that has been deliberately fucked up and another that is just a scan from an old book. You only need to get the deliberately bad word right to pass the test.

[–]artanis2 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They're both from scans, one is a known word and the other is unknown. This is how the system checks for humans as well as gets new data, it assumes some percentage of users will enter the correct input for the unknown word. Once enough users enter the same thing it'll be a known word. I have no idea what happens to the garbage words that have cant be properly translated by most users.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Perhaps if there is little consensus from a large dataset it gets marked as "bad" and to be review manually?

Perhaps if even after 10000 captchas it has over 100 variations with no clear contender?

[–]sltkr -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No. It's a sensible approach but that's not how reCAPTCHA works.

[–]artanis2 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ReCAPTCHA#Operation

That sounds to me like what I described.

[–]sltkr 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Maybe that's how it worked in 2008 or how it was originally intended to work, but go look at a few reCAPTCHA's and I'm sure you agree that one of them is always generated with these properties:

  • always in the same typeface
  • drop shadow (which almost none of the 'real' words have)
  • between 6-8 characters (the length of 'real' words varies much more)
  • (usually) a random combination of letters; not an actual (English or otherwise) word

If the control word was drawn from the set of correctly recognized 'real' words then there should not be a word with these properties all the time.

I'll concede that it is possible that they sometimes use 'real' words as control words, but I don't recall ever seeing them; so this certainly doesn't seem to be the normal mode of operation.

Wow, downvoted for pointing out easily-verifiable facts. Lovely.

I always type some ridiculous or vulgar word. I think deep down I'm hoping it messes them up somehow.

[–]GalacticNexus 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They don't. Special characters such as: , " % @' |á ಠ etc don't need to be entered.

[–]Linktank 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Where does it say that in the Captcha page?

[–]Sylocat 0 points1 point ago

Some recaptchas are too ambiguous to get right on the first try. Maybe it's a 1,7,or T, but the way they're formed sometimes, it makes me want to irritate my bowel syndrome.

Did you know that reCaptcha uses one word for verification, and the other for learning? You could spell the one word incredibly wrong and will still accept it. The verification word ALWAYS uses the same font, and never uses punctuation marks.

Today YOU learned: commas, special characters, etc, etc are not required to pass the captcha.

For example, if my captcha says

',chicken ƹʶnuggets‡└

I am only required to type "chicken nuggets," disregarding the rest of the captcha, and it will accept it.

[–]Balmung 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually you only need to type chicken and anything for the 2nd word.
