  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

I'm not a novelty account, but caudal (9 points).

Edit: Actually, that's the longest word, but caulk and duck score 11 points, and calk, lack, and rack all score 10.

Also edit: I wrote this. It (optionally) reads a dictionary of words on stdin and figures out valid Scrabble words for each of its command line arguments. Sample usage:

      Whether you like it or not, Octopuses (12,700 occurrences) is standard contemporary English usage, while Octopodes (267 occurrences) is a rare attempt at hypercorrection based upon the silly premise, though not without its fans, that a largely arbitrary selection of English words, Octopus among them, should be inflected in the manner of their oldest recorded etymological ancestor. Rather than using the English inflectional system.

      English, like any Germanic language, is littered with Latin and Greek vocabulary.

      Greek aside, if we inflected all the words we acquired from Latin according to their Latin inflectional suffixes, we'd have a very different language indeed.

      But if this is the approach you consideres sensibilem, I won't demandes you admittas it absurdum, if you preferes it, and judgices it correctum.

      Is popularity really sufficient? Surely what's the language standard doesn't merely depend on contemporary usage? I think the current German standard is based on international treaties of german-speaking nations (and probably other government decrees), the French have their Académie française; does England have no comparable standardization? What goes into the textbooks then?

      Actually, one of the unique features of English is that it isn't regulated anywhere. There is no such thing as "standard" English, and the perceived "correct" orthography/phonology tends to come from influential regions (General American, Received Pronounciation).

      As ABabyAteMyDingo points out, English dictionaries are often descriptive, and not prescriptive.

        Wiki: Hypercorrection

        While octopodes and octopi are accepted pluralizations, the english pluralization would still be the most correct.

        I do like hypercorrection a little though, because when people are being all high and mighty about the "correct" spelling of loanwords, I can drag them down by showing them they're wrong (it can be quite fun sometimes).

        Don't know why you are being downvoted. Octopi is just as valid a pluralization of octopus as octopodes or octopuses.

        I don't want to be prescriptivist, but here's the thing:

        The roots of 'octopus' are Greek ('oktṓpous', meaning 'eight-legged'). That being said, when you pluralise it in Greek, it becomes 'oktṓpodes'. Note that if it were Latin, you would change the '-p(o)us' to '-pi' (as with 'cactus' to 'cacti').

        So it really comes off as pretentious (and wrong) to say 'octopi' when the perfectly valid 'octopuses' is there. If you want to be pretentious (and* right*, which is a lot better), you should say 'octopodes' (pronounced 'oct-o-po-dees').

        I hope that helped. :)

        EDITED TO ADD A short note, mainly from my own experience: I think it's pretentious and wrong when someone says 'octopuses', then some annoying, full-of-shit twat goes up to them and says, "No, you're an idiot. It's octopi. Get it?" Use whichever version you want, but don't be high-and-mighty about it.
