Moral of the story: never let a dummy drive your car. I mean, seriously, there are tons of videos of them getting into accidents.

I want to know who keeps giving these dummies driving licenses.

a comment:

I was told that this was a 10 year old little girl who was in her seatbelt. She did not have a booster seat so the seatbelt shoulder harness was not positioned correctly. When the vehicle starter to roll she slipped out of her seatbelt and was ejected. She died at the scene.

The body looks like a kids to me, wow.

Was that his brain flying out right after he hit the second car?

[–]saltshaker23 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The commentors on the video seemed to think it was a piece of the concrete wall, and that it was just skipping along the ground. It's hard to tell though..

To me it looks like he got lucky when he hit that parked car, looks like his lower body absorbed most/all of the impact. Also you can see him move at 1:15ish, and I'm pretty sure that wouldn't be happening if he got decapitated/his brains came out. So maybe it's not as graphic as we thought!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He could have broken his neck or spine and died when he hit that car. Also, he smashed through the windshield. Those take quite a bit of force to break, especially with a soft body. Also, maybe he was twitching/convulsing from the shock his body just took even though he was already dead.

[–]motorcityvicki 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Did that... he got decapitated, didn't he. Oh, God.

Damn.

[–]xxon 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I truly doubt that. It takes a lot of force to decapitate someone. I'm guessing it was another object that we saw continue in the flight path. Like maybe a cap or something.

I reacted more to the person showing up and checking the crashed car at 1:10, and then seems to leave the location without giving the body a closer look.

[–]gatz 6 points7 points ago

[–]iamthedan 28 points29 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'll vouch for this gif. Happened to me.

It was sometime around '89 or '90 (I was still pretty young, so I don't remember exactly) but my family was driving through Colorado in a Chevy Astro in the middle of the night, headed to California. My mother passed out in the driver's seat and rolled the car several times. My parents were belted into the front seats and remained there the entire time, but us children were sleeping in the back seats and not properly belted.

My little sister and I had the grace to be thrown clear of the car as it rolled...and into a cactus patch in the median. Now I don't remember the accident proper, but I sure as shit remember the doctor pulling out the cactus spines that were lodged in my bone.

My older sister was not so lucky. The van eventually came to rest right side up, but on top of her. She broke her jaw, her arm, and one of her legs. My parents remember freaking out because as they ran around looking for their kids they could only hear two of them, until my older sister began screaming through the blood from beneath the car.

We were all very fortunate to survive as well as we did, and even my older sister managed to heal back up with little more than a click in her jaw to remind her, but it still is one of the most frightening things I can remember happening to the entire family.

TL;DR: This happened to my family and shit was fucked up.

The first dummy to leave the vehicle takes roughly 2.6 seconds to reach the ground again which means he reaches about 8m height. Impressive.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes.

[–]cfiet 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The problem is he did not exit at the ground level, but about 2m above the ground, so it is not really precise.

My physics-fu is a little rusty, but this could be more precise (or more incorrect):

  1. calculate initial speed and the time the flew from 2m above the ground back to the 2m above the ground plus the time it takes to fall 2m with this initial speed - calculations
  2. from initial speed get the highest point he reached - calculations

So he left the car travelling 43km/h and flew up to 9.3m above the ground

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

my heat and mechanics may be a little rusty, but if you don't know the velocity, etc. at which he was ejected from the van, how could you possibly know how high he went since he went out of frame as he reached the apex.

[–]RobinTheBrave 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because you can ignore the horizontal velocity. Ignoring air resistance, it takes the same time to go up as down, so you just work out how far an object would fall in 1.3 seconds)

As a sanity check, the vehicle was about 5m long, and by eye you can tell the dummy went higher than that.

I had a coworker that died exactly like this. The SUV she was riding in rolled and it landed on her. Her ex (who was driving) was thrown out the windshield and he survived with a few broken bones. I never leave the driveway without buckling up and making my kids do the same.

[–]too_many_secrets 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My dad got lucky. When he was younger he was driving a bit too fast on a hilly road and another car came across the centerline before he could avoid it and clipped him head on. He went through the windshield and the car flipped several times before landing on him, but upright and still running, with the muffler on his right shoulder. He said he doesn't remember any of it. A car of his buddies was behind him and rushed up and pulled the car off of him and dragged him out. Huge scar from the muffler burn and had to have grafts but that was the only injury. I actually give my seatbelt an extra tug if it feels too loose, heh.

[–]thewittyname 2 points3 points ago

In high school, two students a class ahead of me were killed like this as well. They were speeding above 90 MPH in an SUV attempting to pass someone, pulled back into their lane but over-corrected and ended up hitting the soft shoulder. The car instantly flipped and both were ejected.

When I was a kid I worked at a supermarket. Mario Andretti was hired for some grand opening or other. I asked him the very same question and he replied its not for if you hit an immovable object like a tree, but if you hit another car it might allow you to remain in control of your car long enough to avoid a disaster.

[–]unamerican 2 points3 points ago

'No, man, if I'm in an accident, I want to be, like, thrown clear! Plus my cousin knows this guy whose brother's boss's kid was in an accident and if he'd been wearing his seatbelt, he reckons he might have been trapped. An elaborate and improbable counterexample like that is far more likely than an SUV rolling over at speed! If that happens, I'll just brace myself.'

My best friend's wife was in a wreck when she was 16 where she would have been killed had she been wearing her seat belt (the driver's side was completely crushed but she was thrown into the passenger seat by the force of impact). To this day, they both use that as justification for why they won't wear seat belts. Drives me insane.

Dummies BreakDance http://i.imgur.com/cDDS9.jpg

[–]rafuzo2 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Real simple: Ask yourself if you want to be ejected from a car, usually through a glass window or windshield, at any significant fraction of the speeds we normally drive on the highway (and don't expect your departure from your vehicle will be at all clean, with your body in any configuration that might give you a chance to defend yourself) and then slamming into the nearest solid object (usually with pointing things, like tree branches, or nice well-defined edges, like highway overpass abutments) with the same kind of force that will crumple the front end of your aluminum and steel car.

You're not guaranteed to survive any crash at high speed, but all of a car's safety mechanisms can't protect you even in a very survivable low-speed crash if you're no longer in (and often times you can end up wearing the car in ways it wasn't designed for).

I mean to each his own, but given the rates of traumatic injury and amputation from being ejected from a vehicle, and the "benefits" of not wearing one, it seems like a pretty easy choice to make.

[–]poopingRainbows 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There was a man showing a video of a car accident in a clip trying to demonstrate why it's good to wear a seatbelt:

  • As you can see in this accident the person without a seatbelt went through the window. He's all mangled up. Now look at the person wearing a seatbelt. He looks almost alive.

Something like this happened right in front of me and I ended up comforting a 20 year old kid while he died convulsing in my arms. It's not funny, it's serious shit. Wear you fucking seat belt!

[–]SerendipitousCat 1 point2 points ago

I don't need any convincing but I mailed it to a friend who still never wears one. I doubt that it will convince him however.

[–]Merlaak 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

UGH. My best friend from college REFUSES to wear his seatbelt. He's married with a kid and another one on the way and he STILL won't put it on. It drives me crazy! To make matters worse, his wife was in one of those 1 in a thousand accidents when she was 16 where if she had been wearing her seatbelt (she wasn't) it would have killed her. That's her justification for not wearing one either.

To this day if he's riding in my car, I won't even start it until he is belted in. I thought about sending him this gif, but I doubt it'll make a difference.

[–]cultured_banana_slug 1 point2 points ago

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Close, it was actually headed East on I-4 towards Orlando during a commute I used to need to make a few times a week.

[–]too_many_secrets 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ah. Yeah, the one I saw the guy realized he wanted 275 rather than 75 at the split and tried to cut over after the split. They had just put a concrete V type barrier there. Man, he hit that and went airborne and just rolled. Man, that'll wake you right the hell up at 6am...

And ouch, hell of a commute! We moved to Lakeland for a few years for more land, but then got jobs again back in Tampa, and that was enough of a drive for me.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I was going to school in Tampa while working in Orlando. I can't exactly complain, though.

And they really need to make that split about 5 miles longer than it is to avoid such high speed lane changes. Traffic can get up to 80 going through it.

This reminds me of something. Several years ago I stumbled across some "Arab drifting" videos on Google Videos. "Arab drifting" is basically where wealthy young men in the Middle East get in their white Toyotas and do various retarded things, mostly drifting, at high speed on public roads.

The reason I bring this up is because one such video captured our imaginations. It was a compilation of many brutal but hilarious Arab drifting crashes. One of the crashes involved a white sedan (obviously) drifting on a dusty road. They driver lost control and it slid off the road and began to roll; two people were ejected from the car. The first simply popped out of the window and fell to the ground. The second, however, was launched considerably higher; we estimated the distance as "90 feet," and thus a name was coined.

Here's where you come in, internet. We have been entirely unable to find this video for years. So if you can provide me with any leads as to the location of my treasured "90 feet" video, I would be eternally grateful.

UPDATE: I haven't found the video BUT the clip in question looks a whole lot like several clips in this video: http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=844_1252441268 including the two at the beginning, except the car flies off at high speed and rolls instead of just sliding around. It's almost like they were filmed in the same place. The very last clip in the compilation actually had me nervous because I briefly thought I had found it, but no one flew out of the car.

This is why you don't let an inanimate object drive an SUV.

This happened to me. The car did one roll and landed on it's wheels. When it stopped I was stand on my feet next to the driver side window with one leg still caught under the steering wheel. I was the driver. Not a scratch. Passenger had seatbelt on and was more fucked up then me. Funny how things work.

And if it had done one more roll?

When I was 12 my mom and I were in a car accident that happened exactly like that video. Seat belts plus this giant GORE-TEX coat I was wearing at the time resulted in zero injury (not counting the sore muscles). My mom on the other hand did smash her head into the driver side door window resulting in stitches but that's about it.

I had a friend die in a similar manner back in the 90's. They were in an early model Accord and the driver swerved to avoid a deer; he over corrected, they had an off and hit a drain culvert. the car rolled 3 times. Driver was belted in, passenger was not and was partially ejected. The car rolled over his head and upper chest. He died with in minutes.

One of my friends used to never wear his seatbelt when he drove, saying he "preferred to be thrown clear". That sounds like a great plan.

[–]chemistry_teacher 1 point2 points ago

I dunno. Looks like two of them got well clear of the vehicle and landed safely. The right front passenger jetted away scott-free.

Wait, this is why you SHOULD wear a seatbelt?

1) DON'T wear seatbelt.

2) Be thrown from car in event of crash

3) Land in stylish gymnastic position

4) ???

5) Profit!

[–]Torquemada1970 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And yet I've had to deal with more than a few redditors who will cheerfully argue against wiki/ studies/ anything that proves that not wearing one is insane - because they insist, quite openly, that their 'rights' are all that matters and if their judgement is impaired leading to someone getting killed THEN AT LEAST THEY WERE FREE TO DO IT.

[–]elitexero 1 point2 points ago

People who don't put on their seatbelt when they get into a car are just stupid. Not really any other way to put it.

Actually, that's why you should not drive an SUV: high propensity to roll.

[–]Niten 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Last weekend I was driving on a 50 MPH highway when a large asphalt truck swerved into my lane and struck my rear bumper, spinning me out at full speed.

The eyewitnesses said they were sure I was going to flip – and it felt like I nearly did – but thankfully I was driving a small acura coupe that held firm to the ground. The car went off the road and took some damage, but I was completely unharmed.

Now if I'd been driving an SUV or even a taller car, I would have rolled right in front of that truck. Let's just say I'm sticking with coupes and sedans from now on...

The first guy got some wicked air. On another note, I have been in a roll-over and was not wearing a seatbelt. Yes, I went flying. I was unconscious so I'm not sure if it was wicked air. Either way, I broke my right neck of femur...and laid on it in recovery position about 30 metres from the road for about 3 hours until an ambulance arrived. You don't know what pain is until you lie on a broken bone for a few hours.

Show this to everyone who says that they know omeone who knew someone who was saved because he was not wearing a seatbelt when their car caught fire or something. And then ask them what do they think it is more possible to happen:

  • a statistically highly unlikely combination of events in an acident where the driver is ejected unharmed or

  • what we see in the gif which happens in almost EVERY accident that involves rolling over?
