Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Awesome drawing.

But I cannot unseen this: bushes from the hill shoot thorns (or spines) at the Sun, while the photographer and trees are protected by magic shield.

[–]linkoftime 19 points20 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

For the last millennia, the sun reigned supreme over the desert plants. Oppressing them by day, and appointing watchers by night. But in the early summer of 2011, the plants fight back. One unfortunate man is caught in the struggle, where his only hope is to find a way home with the protection of his trusty forcefield. This is his story ...

Rocks and brush, I think. The foreground seems to be in a shadow, while the red in the background is a sand-dune being hit by the sun. You don't see the sky at all in OP's photo.

Thanks for the second pic. Looks like some odd exposure technique was used in the original picture to fully develop the shaded trees and overexpose the desert hill.

"desert hill" Thanks, before you said that I was wondering why Mars was huge and taking up the sky.

[–]brettmurf 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think it is surrounded by dunes. If you time it right, the sun will be hitting the dunes giving it a bright color, and not hitting the ground in the bowl. Still looks bizarre.

[–]G3ML1NGZ 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Shadows usually have a blue hue to them while straight sunlight has a orange/red tone to it. Looks like the ground was cast with a shadow while the dunes were lit by direct sunlight. Then the color balance was set so the sunlit dunes would be in correct color. but when you do that, the already "blue" ground gets even more blue. making them even more extreme. hope I made it somewhat clearer :)

Thank you for this. I have a National Geographic Picture of the Day App on my Android. It changes the wallpaper every morning so that I have a new picture too wake up with. [–]Marhault 1412 points1413 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

is it a photograph of a painting?

[–]Plutor 127 points128 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Tinted orange by the morning sun, a soaring dune is the backdrop for the hulks of camel thorn trees in Namib-Naukluft Park.

The orange background is the slope of a sand dune. The white spots are rocks. If you look carefully, you can see the thin darker shadow on their right edges. The second photo here can give you a different perspective on a similar dune. The flat area with the trees in the foreground must be in the shade of another dune (out of the picture). Hence the dim blueish color.

I'm pretty sure the levels have been manipulated a little bit, too, to enhance the contrast, but then again that's the norm in photography. (It's impossible to perfectly capture what the human eye sees -- let alone print it or show it on a computer screen -- so what is "real"?)

[–]elroc 16 points17 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The white patches are grass, not rocks. Been there myself really gorgeous place at sunrise. Want a bigger mind-bend? Look up fairy circles, which occur in the same region.

[–]thepapawsatan 23 points24 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I appreciate your help, but there is no way in hell I can understand the photo.

[–][deleted] 24 points25 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The orange is not sky. It's a hill. Weird looking as hell, but not difficult to grasp.

[–]thepapawsatan 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I understand that the orange is not sky, and that it's a hill. What I don't understand is that rather than a hill, it looks like a flat wall.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you look closely you can see some slopes in the dune, but there's nothing on the dune (aside from rocks) for your eye to be able to distinguish depth. So in the picture appears flat.

If there was a person standing on the bottom of the visible area of the dune and a person standing on the top, you'd see the difference. As it is it's mostly sand, so it appears flat.

[–]CaptInsane 17 points18 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]sweddit 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yep, this is it. Great photographs. Kinda surprised so many redditors got visually-trolled by their own minds, if you look closely at the "sky" you'll notice rocks and bushes all over the place making the distinction that the orange section is in fact a hill in the background. To be fair, the soil color in both areas is very different from one another.

For those of you as confused as I was: Look slightly to the right of the tree on the far left (about an inch up from the blue). Those are rocks and a bush. Still don't get it? Picture the blue as dropping off like a cliff, and the orange being a hill in the distance.

Its located somewhere here in the Namibian Desert. A place you shouldn't get lost in. (start zooming out)

[–]Annibal13 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think it's just the Namib Desert--I've been to a little chunk of it and my friends and I wandered into it for a full day and couldn't find our way out until after dark XD. But it was a part of the dunes near Swakop, so not much into the real desert. We could see lights from the city the whole time. And there were pit vipers. Which are so adorable! Sossusvlei is southeast of Swakopmund, southwest of Windhoek, and west of Solitaire. Some of the highest dunes in the world, and incredibly isolated. The rest of Namibia is spectacular as well, from it's Skeleton Coast to Swakop and the Fish River Canyon, Etosha National Park, and the fact that it borders so many other great countries. Take a 20 or so hour bus ride from the capitol and you can be in Livingstone to see Victoria Falls. Just to the east is Botswana with it's spectacular parks and a huge number of animals which are, sadly, becoming pushed mostly into the National Parks.

Aaaah I love Namibia. And Zambia. I wanna go back.

(I'm not just typing at you, BarefootedHoodNinja, but you provided a great spot for me to gush.)

I've been there. Beautiful place and very strange. We camped nearby and then flew over the skeleton coast.

Why the fuck would you transfer this image to imgur instead of linking to national geographic so we can have some context without having to dig through the comment thread?

The orange backdrop is a sand dune, the trees are in the shadow of another one.

The only plausible answer is that that is a jello lake, those trees are made of chocolate, and the sky is orange juice.

I've been there. Namibia is the most staggeringly beautiful place on earth. There are petrified trees in the middle of salt plains, surrounded by sand dunes.

That is perhaps one of the coolest places I've ever been to. If you're ever in Namibia you should go. It is not hard to get to.

[–]Motality 1 point2 points ago

He's using a telephoto lens to crunch the background obviously, but I still don't get how he overexposed the hill like that... excluding photoshop/double exposure techniques I'm stumped.
