Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  6. No animated images. Please submit them to /r/gif, /r/gifs, or /r/reactiongifs instead.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

God, is EVERYTHING in Norway just blatantly, overtly beautiful all the damned time?

[–]aoyiz 63 points64 points ago

The Fjords won an award to the artist that created them, you know?

[–]dwaxe 37 points38 points ago

Good to see Slartibartfast getting some recognition.

The All-Father Odin, and his two brothers, slew the first frost giant Ymir. From Ymir's brains they made the clouds, from his skull the dome of the world, from his bones the mountains and rocks, and from his blood the rivers, seas, and fjords.

Hmm. It's been too long since I read HHGTTG - I don't remember that part AT ALL.

[–]Jaraxo 52 points53 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Pretty much. I went there for 10days back in 2007 and it was the best holiday I've ever been on. I only got to see a small area around Bergen and a little further up north on the train, and it's all amazing scenery, fjords, waterfalls, lakes, streams, fast flowing rapids, mountain trails, perfect.

edit: I took the liberty of uploading a few photos that I took while on holiday. Here is the album. The one dated "1/8/2007 16:32" is the view from the front garden of the house we stayed in.

[–]deinem 10 points11 points ago

Agreed. Even an amateur like me can get some good photos in Norway.

[–]ghostchamber 11 points12 points ago

Bring your wallet. We're one of the most expensive countries in the world. Prepare to be shocked.

[–]jenjamina 5 points6 points ago

As I've heard from Norwegian - "Well, Switzerland is one of the most expensive countries, second after Norway".

I went back in 2009, and it's like that all the way up to Tromsø. Try dropping a the street view man anywhere on the coast, it's hilarious how often it just happens to be jawdropping.

I went around the south coast through Bergen into Oslo then up to Tromsø in 2004. It'a a remarkable part of the world and surprisingly warm in the arctic north.

[–]gdmfc 2 points3 points ago

[–]dwaxe 128 points129 points ago

Sometimes it's just Photoshopped...

[–]eviljolly 20 points21 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

True, but they only Photoshop it for our safety. They actually have to make it uglier because the beauty might otherwise overwhelm us and cause us to go into seizures.

[–]maphes86 51 points52 points ago

What, a bubble can't have a drop shadow? Or reflect light that isn't effecting the world around it? The skepticism of reddit knows no bounds. This bubble is pushing the envelope, it's a Maverick.

[–]sturle 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]thaen 45 points46 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Which is more likely:

1) The image was taken as-is.

2) The image was photoshopped.

Given the length of the shadows and the quality of the light on the ground, the sharp line of the grass and the water even though the background is supposed to be blurred, the incredible sharpness of the bubble and its mirror-like qualities, even though bubbles typically display tons of chromatic alteration in their reflections... I'd say number 2 is more likely in the modern era.

edit: If it is a real photo, it's very nice. If it's not a "real" photo, it's very nice.

Your iPad snapped while you derped. I love it.

[–]Gnomearts 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I also see no sign of a camera, or photographer in the reflection. Which is often the case when photographing eyes and bubbles. Given the angle at which this bubble appears to be shot, there should be.

[–]nilcalion 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not really, check out other "bubble reflection" pictures. The camera is such a small object especially on a spherical reflective surface that it almost always gets lost, not to mention that the backdrop here is dark aswell.

[–]BeforeTime 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also check out tilt and shift lenses. They are really cool,

Don't know if this was used here though.

[–]TheNickLovin 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You can make out what appears to be a photographer on the lower third of the bubble. It's probably me just seeing things, but it looks like a man holding a camera up to his eye.

Either you're a very decent Norwegian or a jealous one from elsewhere. As far as I understand the movement of the earth you get the light thats missing in winter as a bonus in summer.

I enjoyed that in June in Norway - siting outside with dim sunlight until midnight, sunrise at 3am.

Since Norway isn't a member of the European Union, you would think that was the case. However, as Norway is a chartered Schengen Agreement member, passport-less border crossings from neighboring countries is an effortless affair.

In short, one can simply walk into Norway from the neighboring EU countries of Sweden and Finland. However, russian-norwegian border crossings are subject to passport control.

Is that actually what houses look like in Norway?

[–]vetlemakt 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

In the rurals, yes. Small wooden houses with small red wooden barns. Not everybody in Norway live in these houses, but everybody has a grandmother or -father that does.

I like that you suddenly placed my grandparents in a little cabin. Thank you, sir.

...Is there something out of the ordinary about them?

[–]recreational 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

They're way too pretty and idyllic. They ought to be boxed into rows of neat, mindless uniformity, or rundown and crumbling like good, God-fearing American houses.

...Have you seen the nature over here? The houses you can see here actually look kind of shabby.

On the south coast, traditional houses look more like this.

More pics of sørlandshus ("southland houses"), for those who might be interested.

Norway is amazing! Lived in Stavanger for 5 of the best years of my life. If you ever visit, the best time is around the 17th of May when they have their national holiday and the weather is perfect. Pretty much any other time its grey, cloudy, and rainy like Seattle.
