A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

If that's Susie Derkins in the bed with him, so help me, I have lost faith in G.R.O.S.S.

Seeing as how Calvin's kid has Suzie's toy Mr Bun, I'd say it's her.

[–]erobins 378 points379 points ago

That would be because he and Hobbes captured him many years earlier, clearly. Trophy of war gentlemen.

[–]JohnOrrIsAnArsonist 180 points181 points ago

But don't forget that Hobbes defected to Suzie's side and Calvin was forced to do a prisoner swap (even if Hobbes wasn't an actual prisoner).

Look at these in this order:

½. (S)he likes me!

  1. It's shameless the way we flirt

  2. Calvin blackmailed

  3. Later in life

  4. Hobbes and Bacon

  5. Don't put away your childish things

  6. Perfect for each other

/edited for grammar: a missing "at"
//edit #2: forgot about (S)he likes me!

Watterson said that they had a quasi-romantic relationship so I wouldn't doubt him marrying her as a plausible outcome.

Glad it was recognized. C&H has had a significant influence on the way I view certain things. I still take "nothing breaks" when it's awesome outside and take my kid to the park.

C&H has also gotten me off the computer and outside to build snowmen with my son when I really didn't feel like it. I owe Bill a lot.

I'm sure he knows he's touched a million people. People never sit there and go "Oh man, I hated Calvin & Hobbes". Everyone gets nostalgic or talk about their stuffed animals or games they played because of it. Sometimes I wonder if he was just trying to help us all learn those life lessons.

Damn, the man was awesome!

[–]WiglyWorm 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He's from my area (He is from Chagrin Falls, Ohio. A suburb of Cleveland). He was well known for slipping in to a mom and pop book store, autographing copies of the books, and slipping them back on the shelf. The person who bought the book may just randomly get an autographed copy. Unfortunately, he stopped that practice when he learned people were ebaying them.

He is fiercely against commercialization of his work all those "calvin pissing one whatever" stickers you see are bootleg, and he will never allow merchandise other than the books to come out.

The Cleveland, Ohio area paper The Plain Dealer got a once in a lifetime chance to interview him but it was sadly a completely blown opportunity. You can almost taste the snark in the answer about stamps, for instance.

So, yeah, he seems all and all a really really down to earth sort of fellow who values his privacy.

I know what you're saying. If you've ever read any of Bill Watterson's thoughts on licensing and whatnot, you cringe every time you see Calvin pissing on a Ford logo.

But clearly Tom and Dan (the artists) are huge fans of his work, and this really comes off as an homage. It's a love letter to Bill Watterson's creation, and I'd like to think he would appreciate that. I really hope they do more.

This isn't as hard to understand as people try to make it. By the end of ten years, I'd said pretty much everything I had come there to say. It's always better to leave the party early. If I had rolled along with the strip's popularity and repeated myself for another five, ten, or twenty years, the people now "grieving" for Calvin and Hobbes would be wishing me dead and cursing newspapers for running tedious, ancient strips like mine instead of acquiring fresher, livelier talent. And I'd be agreeing with them. I think some of the reason Calvin and Hobbes still finds an audience today is because I chose not to run the wheels off it. I've never regretted stopping when I did.

Now that is some truth.

[–]derleth 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Every time this comes up I'm reminded of Peanuts and Charles Schulz. He created the modern visual language of American newspaper strips, making memorable characters out of simple lines and spare composition, and his work is certainly in the pantheon, but he was, in so many ways, the exact opposite of Watterson:

  • His style was an embrace of the limited space comics were starting to get, and imitators allowed editors to shrink strips even further to the point Watterson had to fight hard to get his full Sunday cartoons run unmolested.
  • He enjoyed marketing and expanding his franchise. He shows that merchandising isn't always bad. For example, look at the Charlie Brown Christmas special: It's a classic and has brought much joy to the world. This doesn't excuse the sad peeing and praying Calvin knock-offs, but it does provide an honest counterargument to Watterson's anti-merchandising position.
  • He kept going. He kept at it for a lot of his life and it's heartbreaking to see how far the strip fell from its high point in the 1950s-1960s to where it was at the end. The example of later Peanuts is a perfect argument in support of Watterson's decision to quit early. The spectacle of the shambling corpse of 'Classic Peanuts' still haunting comics pages with five- and six-decade-old strips completely out of their original cultural context is an object lesson in what's wrong with modern American newspaper cartooning, and I'm sure Watterson would fight tooth and nail any attempt to do that to Calvin and Hobbes.

I know how you feel, Watterson wanted no part of any merchandising or TV shows so I absolutely cringe when I see all those damned Calvin peeing stickers. I rage for him.

This is nowhere near as bad, but I really wonder what Watterson would think of it. I found it pretty amusing. Just seeing a new comic with Hobbes in it made me wistful.

[–][deleted] 42 points43 points ago

I think the worst part is that Calvin is seeing Hobbes as a stuffed animal. In the comic, only he could see Hobbes. Now, he's lost whatever it was that brought Hobbes to life, and he' just a kid's toy.

Calvin lost the one thing that we all lose: Childhood.

It had to happen eventually, Watterson just didn't want to draw it. I don't see anything wrong with this comic, it was clearly done out of love and not to make money. Also, I think anyone who can name their child Bacon hasn't completely lost their childlike ingenuity.

Yeah, I really like the spirit of this and the art style is pretty spot on (with the exception of the lettering, that's just all kinds of wrong) but it just feels... a little forced.

Why the hell is there a reference to Donald Trump in here? It's not like I like the guy, but what's the point of shoehorning some lame political "joke" in here.

Also: Bacon. Really? Calvin's going to name his kid Bacon? I sincerely hope that's supposed to be a nickname or something.

[Edit: Got through to the site and the the artist explains that his niece was nicknamed Bacon and he thinks that Calvin of all people would name their kid that. Strongly disagree.]

Has it occurred to you that it might be a reference to Francis Bacon, the philosopher? Just like Calvin is a reference to philosophers John Calvin and Thomas Hobbes?

Not gonna lie... this made me smile. Call it what you will, it's a great tribute. There are few things that brought me more joy than Calvin and Hobbes as a kid, and few things that hold up so well even 10-15 years later.

I honestly wouldn't mind more of this.

I was kind of sad because I knew this wasn't going to be a continued reboot of the cartoon.

Fuck that. Stop what you're doing. Go into the woods. Get lost. Nobody is around, so talk to yourself. Pretend you're a pirate. Nobody's judging you. Leave your phone in the car. Don't bring a camera. Take nothing but the clothes on your back (and maybe a slingshot) and realize that you can be a child whenever the fuck you want.

But don't be out too long, you have work in the morning.

I'm in complete agreement, and I hate Donald Trump and love to see him made fun of as often as possible.

I just don't remember Bill Watterson injecting any sort of commentary on modern political figures (by name) in his humor. Even if it may have happened a few times, it had to be so rare that paying homage to Calvin and Hobbes just once would make one probably want to err on the side of not-doing-that.

[–]TundraWolf_ 16 points17 points ago

That's the amazing thing about the comic is that it doesn't add anything that ages it. It doesn't reference vague political scandals from the 80s that are easily forgotten.

That's one thing I really dislike about newer seasons of south park. The episodes get dated so quickly. Who still enjoys the episode about britney spears? Okay, now who enjoys the episode where the pee-wee hockey team had to play the NHL team?

I think the artist was channeling Bloom County in that part. That was the comic which regularly had politicians and other public figures haunting the closet of anxieties. Basically the same "Comic Era," too.

Don't even need to say that much - Donald Trump was a regular in Bloom County, to the point where he swapped brains with Bill the Cat.

Having Calvin's daughter being scared of a politician hiding in the closet instead of a monster seemed to fit for me, but choosing one from current events does make it seem a bit more of a political statement than would be preferable.

Did anyone else get a sudden pang on their heartstrings when they realized that Calvin is in a frame with only him and Hobbes, and Hobbes is stuffed?

I mean, obviously it's the point of the comic that he is grown up now, but it still is a bit sad!

I always sort of wondered if Bill Waterson would end the comic with such a panel, if he really wanted to go for a Defcon:Toy-Story-3 level tear-jerker ending. I'm glad he didn't.

[–]lissaandy 144 points145 points ago

Seeing Hobbes in the closet just makes me cry.

Homage or not, Calvin and Hobbes has a big enough collection (I have the three hardcover set, they are AWESOME, please get them if you can afford them) that you can read it through, cover to cover, immediately read through it again and still pick up more little things in the subtext that you missed the first fifteen times, and you are definitely still entertained.

I appreciate the sentiment, and I think "Pants are Overrated" did a pretty good job, but C+H is one of those things for me...I don't want to imagine them grown up, and I certainly don't want to see it.

Maybe it's cause Calvin helps keep the little kid in me alive, but I just can't handle seeing him put his best friend on the shelf in the closet. It's too much of a metaphor for how people seem to treat their friends these days, and I'd like to think that Calvin would never do that.

[–]GreyInkling 52 points53 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

For me this is almost on the level of watching Andy from Toy Story (my favorite movie as a kid for some time) give away his toys before heading off to school, when I myself had just left for college the year before.

This comic is for people who are holding on to their childhood memories for fear of growing up, when the greater joy is watching those things be passed on to the next generation.

[–]altmuzac 20 points21 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This. That scene in Toy Story was the one that made me cry the most.

But he and Susie did the most painfully loving thing they could have with their childhood best friends: They passed them on to their daughter.

[–]lissaandy 22 points23 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

For sure. I do appreciate that sentiment. I think it was well done.

For me, Calvin has always been a representation of youth. He is a character suspended in time (he didn't age throughout the lifetime of the strip), and I appreciate that about him.

I just don't want to see this work of art exploited. Calvin doesn't have to grow up. Watterson knew what he was doing. It should be left alone.

Is nothing sacred?

[–]devourerkwi 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That's the thing about homages. To many—yourself included—the best way to celebrate perfection is to spread its original form. To others—like me—imitation and personalization is the greatest compliment one can muster. We all need to find joy in our favorite things in our own ways.

It bothers me that so few appreciate this for what it is. It is yet another way to show that we still remember what can easily be classified as the greatest comic to grace the newspaper. This is not a mockery of his work, but an artist's way to show that they still remember this masterpiece. How is it okay to quote a work in another written piece, but not remember a comic by drawing a homage to it?

[–]basquefire 79 points80 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This has potential.

The artwork is very true to Watterson's style, in a number of ways. The artist(s?) have employed the trope of waking the dad in the middle of the night, and successfully replicated some of Watterson's facial expressions and shading habits. There's also been a tasteful and understated nod to panels and text unbound by the standard comic grid.

That being said, the writing is weak. I don't detect any real punchline, and the reference to Donald Trump is too concrete and topical for my taste.

I realize that it's unfair to compare a tribute strip to the refined work of Watterson the Master, and I want to make it clear that I'm happy to see this piece. However, I'd be even happier if the artists teamed up with a good writer and continued to develop this strip.

It's quite possible - I'm not familiar with Bloom County.

One of C&H's tropes is that of Calvin waking parents in the middle of the night to take care of monsters, although under-the-bed seems to be their preferred haunt.

If this is indeed a Bloom County reference, how does that sit with you? I'm all for the evolution of new strips, but to write a direct successor to C&H and to incorporate tropes from another writer smells polluted to me.

I think this is great, but I don't agree with the sentiment that the strip should be continued. I think my favourite part of the comic was that it ended.. without actually ever ending. In my mind, Calvin and Hobbes went off exploring and having all the same adventures they always had, and always will have.

I have a stuffed tiger that I named Hobbes that I got when I was 5. I still have him (21 years later). He protected me from all sorts of monsters when I was a kid. I think this strip is extraordinarily sweet, and a nice homage - but let's leave it at that. Let Calvin and Hobbes be our youth forever. :)

[–]theCaptain_D 16 points17 points ago

From the artist:

As for why someone would name their daughter Bacon? Well, my niece acquired the nickname Bacon over the years, and Francis Bacon was another old philosopher along with Calvin and Hobbes, so it seemed like a good name – plus, if anyone would name his daughter Bacon, it would be Calvin.
