A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

No, that's what the first guy who moves attempts. The target does a sweet-ass reversal. Right?

edit: It IS an uchimata, but as a counter which is what makes it awesome.

I wonder how many redditors will now go try this and fall on their face.

[–]greenpixel 0 points1 point ago

It's a fucking hard throw to do right as well, I still absolutely eat it sometimes when doing an uchimata, and I've got a black belt in ju jitsu.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I did a double-take when I first read the title, but I think it's grammatically correct; it's just that I've never heard someone say "did happen" instead of "happened". Also, there is nothing wrong with the placement of the "just" ("what just did happen" does not sound any better). For example, you can compare "what did just happen" with "what will soon occur" or "what I have just seen", which sound better, but have the same underlying syntactic structure. The sentence is merely extremely quirky, as one does not often insert an adverb within a compound verb (i.e., "did happen").

[–]EggzOverEazy 5 points6 points ago

yes. he said his ankle was fucked up before that fight, and thats why he tapped so fast. he was beating dude's ass, so there is really no excuse for letting him execute such a low-percentage move.

thats Ryo Chonan, by the way.

[–]EggzOverEazy 1 point2 points ago

definitely... completely amazing.

before the last minute triangle on chael, the flying heel hook and this amazing maneuver were my 2 favorite highlights containing Anderson.

... hm, well maybe the front kick on Vitor is up there now, too.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

Yeah that front kick was amazing too. I also loved how he handled forrest griffin.

One of my other favorite submissions was how gracie submitted kimo... amazing that even with the weight disparity, he could still force a tap on someone while balled up in a corner.

Silva was absolutely not beating Chonan's ass. You're just saying that because you watched the video where they only show Silva's strikes. I've seen the actual fight and Chonan was ahead by the judges count as well as by the commentators.

[–]sporkmonger 2 points3 points ago

Broken leg from the lateral force of the attacker's body hitting the side of the legs or? Trying to see where a major injury could come from and that's the only thing I'm coming up with?

Me too, because people keep getting their knees destroyed. Upvoted you from zero

[–]Momentstealer 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Looking it up, it seems to be banned in international competition since an Olympian's fibula was broken in 76. So says Wikipedia.

Honestly, I can see a good reason for the throw to be banned, as to really force your opponent down, you have to catch and twist him with an such an enormous amount of force in your legs that it might as well be a kick. (Then again, I've seen a person sutemi while throwing seoi nage, landing on his opponent for the throw for a legal point...)

I was taught the throw, but we did it much in the way that this video had done it, slow and the fall was surrendered, to prevent injury.

Some small tips:

  1. When you're getting started, messing around in single-player, try acting out the move you want to do in real life, figuring out what joints are doing what, then translate it into the game's controls. Eventually, you'll have a good understanding of how each joint moves, and what that will mean for your tori.

  2. When your joints are set to move, you will notice the sphere of your joint turns into two semispheres, one larger than the other. The larger one points in the direction of momentum transfer, and so your character will (generally) move in that direction. Use that to understand which joints to move while attacking, dodging or in the air.

  3. Don't just move your joints in an effort to attack the other player. See where he is, and what opportunities he has to attack, and try to counter based on that. One of my favorite ways to counter an expected attack is to spin and "coil up" in a way that moves most of my body away from the attack I expect, then release that and spin the other way, hitting him hard.

  4. If you seem to have no leverage, and no way to hit your opponent, you can always kick or punch the ground. If done correctly, that will bounce you in another direction, allowing you to change your momentum. Wushu players are very good at this.

  5. Toribash movement has huge amounts of possibilities, as you can just control your muscles. Just remember that there are some muscle groups missing from the game, most notably the ones responsible for rotating your arms and legs, so your knees and elbows will always move the same way in relation to their respective limbs. This makes a true 'punch' very difficult, as that relies on your elbow extending while your arm rotates.

  6. And the best advice I can give you: DON'T TRY TO COPY OTHERS. Doing that can give you some good ideas as far as opening moves are concerned, but the majority of the game is decided by who has the better understanding of how to move in mid-fight. Someone who copied an opener from the best player in the world may have a ferocious first two turns, but after that will be cake.

If you ever want to spar or something, i'll be up for it. Just send me a message! Oh, and remember that I haven't played in a year or two, so i may take some time to warm up again.

Good luck, and happy bashing!

I think its a demo as the bigger guy flips out both his legs without really the appropriate force from the little guy. Still a cool move, but I don't think it's completely genuine.

[–]Thieves_MacGyver 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Considering it was filmed in a studio, yes, it is a demo and they are probably going easy on each other. That said, having a little guy throw his leg on up into your balls is a pretty good motivator to throw your legs in the opposite direction.

[–]MarcusAurellius 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, the counter-throw, uchimata flips out the opponents legs a bit, so this is a sign of a good throw. It very well have been a demonstration, though.

I am about to finish my master's degree in physics and I certify that physics does not apply to judo.

[–]boris_seeks_natasha 24 points25 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I wrote a paper on Judo for an undergrad physics class and got an A. In the ogoshi, the man initiating the move (man A) is attempting to use his hip as a fulcrum. He never gets it close enough to his opponent (man B), who jumps the hip. Notice how B then gets HIS hip beneath A's and pulls A's weight forward, over the newly created fulcrum and uses the momentum created to pull A heels over head.
As a short guy practicing Judo I preferred taller opponents because it was easier to get leverage on them.

[–]CleverRedditHandle 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I am 5' 1". It's amusing having 6' tall partners practice their ogoshi on me. I hear a lot of knees popping.

[–]fatticus 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I thought it was the victim's knee which usually popped?

[–]Gnodab 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

For people that much taller, bending in a way that gets their hip low enough can often put lots of pressure on their knees in ways that pressure is not supposed to be applied

[–]LarrySDonald 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The "killer app" in the move itself (and most of judo) is to position the downline joints so that they don't require especially much muscle to gain leverage, thus producing more power then you'd expect possible. Trying to shoehorn a move like this into working by lowering the leverage point 6" or so (possibly more) screws this up because you're in a high squat making your knees more vulnerable to the side forces.

Tall people also often have pretty messed up knees to start with, partly because this isn't specific to judo (lots of knee bends involved in day-to-day stuff) and because the whole frame is less stable (balancing taller object, putting more wear on the lower joints esp knees/lower back).

TL;DR Yeah, judo against short guys hurts.

Some facts about Gene Lebell's encounter with Steven Seagal.

  1. Gene LeBell was working as a Stunt Coordinator/Director, not a stunt man (LeBell is an old man--late 60's or even 70);

  2. Gene LeBell was working on the "Under Siege" set;

  3. The incident was caused due to Seagal "bragging" about how, through his training, he could not be choked out or rendered unconscious. He did "invite" (not so much of a challenge) anyone in the group of stunt men to "try;"

  4. Gene LeBell, a once world-class Judo player and professional wrestler, accepted the offer;

  5. LeBell choked out Seagal in about 6 seconds (no surprise to me).

  6. When unconscious, Seagal lost bladder control and soiled his pants (I have had this happen to me, so, no surprise to me).

Judo is actually fairly practical in street fighting. Considering most of the people you'd go against aren't trained in martial arts.

[–]eStonez 1 point2 points ago

I played Judo for 2+ years in military pre-commando training center .. open to public but only 5 civilians there ( including me ).

My instructors forbid us to use Judo in street fighting. And they keep mentioning about potential dangers if we use Judo techniques off the mat. Once a month 1+ years experienced player have to train on the ground (off the mat) as advance training.

Judo techniques usually put yourself closer to your enemy, this might be nasty if the enemy is armed with sharp objects. I'd rather leave the place than risk my life attacking somebody .. if the situation is not life threatening.

Judo offensive techniques involves grabbing, throwing and smashing the whole body to ground. This is norm and quite harmless if both persons are playing on the mat.

But on the concrete floor/wall or furnitures might break bones of the person you are fighting. This might be very good if you are trying to kill that person but I don't think this is the good idea.

Being that most street/bar fights end up on the ground anyway, judo will save your ass.

[–]SlightlyInsane 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Ok look, that quote is bullshit and I am so very tired of it.

There are three things that need to be true in order for going to the ground to be AT ALL viable.

1: You have to be up against only one opponent. Going to the ground with a second or even third opponent there is a terrible idea. Why not just lie down on the ground holing a sign that says "Please kick me in the head repeatedly until blood comes out of my ears."

2: You can't be fighting on a surface that is going to do much damage to you, such as broken glass, or gravel. Don't give me bullshit about "I can take the pain". Or something like that.

3: Your opponent needs to be unarmed... For obvious reasons.

Also, that statistic you no doubt hear about 90% of fights ending up in the ground? Yeaahhhh...

[–]G3ML1NGZ 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

you really love making up situations to force your narrow minded opinions on others. Of course you would rather run than go against 3 opponents. Not the most herioic move but it keeps you alive. Judo can be used a LOT while standing up. And the site you linked: so a site advertising another combat system is an unbiased source for facts about another kind of sport.. yeah right

And sure, not 90% of all fights end up on the ground because not everyone prefers it... but you can take any fight you want to the ground. So with me the percentage would be 100%.

All you did was make arguments that suit you because you don't like the sport.

I've practiced judo for 10 years and can tell you one thing, IF a fight gets down on the ground a judo or BJJ fighter will have an advantage, but that does not mean that it's the only tactic we'll use. I'll throw punches as well, Judo is made to be used when the opportunuty comes.

So this is how it breaks down.

  1. in any form, going against 3 guys is never smart. Run.

  2. The point of judo is throwing the other one so he lands on his back, in your imaginary case, in glass or gravel, submission comes when the oppertunity comes.

  3. Fighting an armed person is always dumb.

[–]SlightlyInsane 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You honestly think you can run from every fight involving multiple attackers? Think you will always be able to avoid fighting an armed attacker? How very narrow minded. Of course you want to run if you can, in any situation, but that isn't always a possibility.

And the site you linked: so a site advertising another combat system is an unbiased source for facts about another kind of sport.

Dude, I wish I could find the 100% (99%?) unbiased source I had the other day, but unfortunately I couldn't find it in a couple minutes on google, and I didn't want to waste my time doing so. Honestly, I didn't even notice that the website I linked was a website for a martial arts course.

All you did was make arguments that suit you because you don't like the sport.

Completely untrue. My opinion of judo is neutral. As a martial art I personally think it is lacking a bit in standing techniques, but it is certainly solid. I feel everyone should learn at least some judo or brazillian jujitsu, after all, if you do end up on the ground you need to know what to do. This discussion, however, is about intentionally going to the ground.

I've practiced judo for 10 years and can tell you one thing, IF a fight gets down on the ground a judo or BJJ fighter will have an advantage, but that does not mean that it's the only tactic we'll use. I'll throw punches as well, Judo is made to be used when the opportunuty comes.

I think I addressed this already.

you really love making up situations to force your narrow minded opinions on others.

No, I point out flaws in peoples strategies for dealing with opponents, so that they can rectify them, and prepare for the situation.

Anyway, let me as you this: If you throw your opponent, say with an ogoshi, why would you (Or would you?) go to the ground when you can merely kick your opponents teeth in?

[–]G3ML1NGZ 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And I didn't say Judo was perfect either but your first post reeked of judgement because really no reasoning followed. And in you later post, you showed a better side by actually giving reasons for you opinions. That makes a whole lot of difference.

Running is always a better option if you have it, you have a better option of outrunning them than trying to fight 3 guys at once.

Flaws in strategies are based on the circumstances each time so really not debateable. And would you rather kick someones teeth in than holding him down and try to talk some sence into him?

[–]FearlessFreep 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Fighting an armed person is always dumb.

My kali instructor works dept of corrections. In civilian life he always has several very nasty knives hidden somewhere on his person. I would never fight him on the ground. He'd stick me five times before I could ever get that arm bar on and ten times before I could let him loose...and I'd never see it coming until too late

Yeah, you're right that fighting an armed person is dumb. The problem is that you may not realize he's armed until too late. Yeah, fighting 3 opponents at once is not smart. The problem is that you may not realize the 1 guy you are fighting has 2 friends until you're holding the one guy in a position that leaves you vulnerable.

Your objections center around the idea of having an approach to fighting and then forcing or hoping to force the fight into that approach. I used to think the same about Tae Kwon Do "Oh, I'll never have to fight on the ground because I'll kick him in the head before he can take me down" I wanted the fight to fit my art rather than work my art to fit what the fight could be. Since then I've done Hapkido (my main art now), BJJ, MMA and Muy Thai. I don't like the idea of fighting on the ground, but I train to do it anyway because it can happen.

How would I fight 3 guys? Run. How would I fight a guy with a weapon? Run. How would I fight a guy in parking lot on asphalt with broken beer bottles on the ground? Run. How would I fight 1 guy when I had no choice and I didn't know if he has any friends or weapons? Stay on my feet as much as possible, keep my distance and keep my eyes wide. I'm not going to grab you as long as I can punch you; I'm not going to punch you as long as I can kick you. Be able to work all distances but always be looking to disengage

I used to say "90% percent start end on the ground but 100% start on the feet", but yeah, that 90% number is a myth

I basically have always summed up your three points as "3 reasons I don't want to fight on the ground: Terrain, Friends, Weapons"

Nevertheless, I train BJJ and ground fighting for three reasons: To learn how to keep from going to the ground, to learn how to survive if I end up there, to learn how to get back up

[–]FuckingLegit 1 point2 points ago

A trained fighter in just about any style (including street brawling) going up against an untrained fighter usually ends with only one person on the ground.

[–]nunsrevil 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Good. Judo works pretty well in one on one fights, and if you're weak or small it doesn't matter because it's mostly about using your opponent's power against himself.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I had a coworker who was fairly small, but well-trained in judo. She said that she wouldn't be too good in a fist fight or getting stuck up, but if someone tried to grapple with her, they'd be eating concrete.

[–]iok 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Players practice these throws with full or near-full resistance in training and competition, as other grapplers do in say freestyle or BJJ. Full resistance as in your partner/opponent is trying his utmost to resist you while at the same time trying to best you. These throws having been chosen empirically, refined and trained with resistance thus work very well, and perhaps as well as any move could.

Specifically the uchimata, as thrown sloppily in the gif, is a very popular, high-percentage throw in judo as well as in other grappling formats and MMA. Some nicer uchi mata in international competitions here.

[–]FearlessFreep 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This particular technique? Not very well. You can tell the smaller man is trying to maintain balance on one leg against a heavier opponent . He doesn't succeed so he drops to one knee. Outside the dojo, on wood, asphalt or concrete, etc...his knee would be smashed. I don;t know if the knee drop is intended (probably not) or just happened when he lost his balance (more likely) but either way it's a high risk maneuver

In general though, the smaller man is trying to take the circular energy of the larger man and use it against him and that's a good principle

Every art has some 'really cool flashy demo techniques' that the practitioners use to train body motion and a lot of other things that also look good in demos, but that they know are not practical

In this case, if the smaller man had jumped over the larger man's though (as he did) and planted his feet before his counter throw (rather than attempting to sweep) it would've been more pragmatic. But a sweep on a throw is in itself all a potentially useful and pragmatic addition so it's worth training

[–]stivo 0 points1 point ago

while this technique is pretty awesome, its complicated and easy to get wrong. there is a must easier way to avoid a hip throw. the defender simply needs to step to his right in this video, pivoting around the attacker.

I can see this going very badly if the person on the right doesn't cooperate or the one on the left can't follow through for any of a dozen reasons. I suspect this is a mod on what was originally a lethal move.

Pretty sweet! I used to practice Judo as a kid. The first guy went for an over the hip throw - an easy maneuver to execute, but, can be somewhat easily countered. The second guy - very creatively - avoids the throw, and executes an Uchi Mata - a hard to execute maneuver, because of the weird position your in, however, if done well, harder to counter, as it unbalances your legs.
