The key is to always initiate with a hand, then wait to feel movement in the other person's finger joints. If there is movement, go in for the 'urban slide'. If there is no movement, go for the firm two-bounce handshake. Hugs are out of the game unless you know the person well. Generally, white people will rarely go for the urban slide. Hugs are out of the game unless you know them well. My credentials involve growing up in Atlanta.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

alternatively, if there's movement, grind their knuckles together in your palm, then vigorously throw their hand away and glare at them. now they will never forget where you stand on the "urban slide".

One time I met this black guy outside the gym at my uni, and he pounded my fist and then I took it away and he still had his hand there like there was still handshaking to be done, and I was said "Woah, too much," trying to be funny and he looked me dead in the eye and said, completely serious "No, too little."

I finished his sequence of hand motions.

I'm always nervous about meeting urban folks

FTFY

I just make the first move. Knuckles is my go-to, mostly because it is so simple. The fact that it can be accomplished from a distance also helps reduce possible fumbling, though. Bro-grabs however are probably the most common. With bro-grabs though, you have to decide if you're going to follow through with a post-shoulder-bump or possible finger cusp. This additional complexity can definitely throw a wrench in things.

[–]snoharm 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

First of all, I'm not sure if I'm terrified or in awe of the idea of your username.

Second, I think most of these things are pretty intuitive. The angle of the arm coming in, the positioning of the shoulder and the movement of the hand should tell you all you need to know.

Finally, we're all totally over-thinking handshakes.

I used to hate him but he's actually a cool guy(at least from his interviews/videos) and his music is decent if you skip the super girly songs. The John Mayer Trio is also really good.

I recall a video I saw of John Mayer telling some of his teeny bopper fans that he didn't really write his own music, just to watch them cry.

John Mayer Trio is so good. So is the "Where The Light Is" live album that includes some trio stuff and has a lot of improv on his studio songs.

He is such a soulful player and vocalist but always waters it down in the studio. It's a shame.

[–]cgreer00 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The "Where the Light Is" album is simply fantastic. Some of the best modern blues you will hear.

[–]washburnmav 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I totally agree, but I read in an interview somewhere that he enjoys the simplicity in the studio of making a song that fits perfectly together. But when hes live he lets it go and it's incredible.

[–]dropcode 27 points28 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm not a fan of john mayer's music, because I don't really get into cheesy love songs, but that guy can play his instrument like few people can. he's extremely talented and really funny.

This. Pino Palladino is a bad, bad man on bass too.

[–]winampman 1 point2 points ago

And Steve Jordan is a bad, bad man on the drums. I went to a John Mayer concert last year and Steve did a crazy drum solo. I thought he was going to explode or something. Audience loved it.

[–]Mr_Mars 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Think John Mayer's all about cheesy pop?

bam!

Thank me later.

I've a longstanding theory that the only reason he does cheesy pop stuff to begin with is so that his label will let him do the cool stuff that doesn't sell as well. "There, I wrote another number one single. Can I go back to blues jams now?"

[–]ninvertigo 29 points30 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The song Neon acoustic while singing... Ive been playing 15+ years and I cant do that shit without serious fumbles... as much as he is a total douche, he is a very talented musician.

[–]bkev 24 points25 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah...Neon is ridiculously difficult. I read somewhere that, when he was a teen, he was so obsessed with the guitar that his parents had him see a therapist several times because they were concerned with his single-mindedness. All that practice shows. I've always loved this one.

[–]thediffrence 11 points12 points ago

Neon on the the Where The Light Is album blows my mind...

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The tuning alone on that is nutty, I don't know how he thought of that, and then let alone frigging played it and sang it at the same time.

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The reason for the "nutty" tuning is actually pretty logical. It's in standard E but the lowest string is tuned down 2 steps to a C. Why this is is because the song has a running bass line for the chords he is playing. Tuning it to a C allows easy access to his ( albeit huge) thumbs. "Your body is a wonderland" is also tuned down one step to a D so you don't have to reach for the A note on the lowest string in the hook.

Charlie Hunter takes this to a new level by adding two strings so he has a bass. I think John Mayer needs to pay a royalty check to Charlie :)

[–]Cheese-Its_Christ 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Unless I learned it wrong, it's just standard with the low E dropped to C. I figured it was because he had written the gist of the song, but wanted to be able to play a pseudo-bass section. If that was the case, then tuning down to C would just be the easiest solution.

Edit: Changed B to C as per the link from frenchst. My memory seems to have been a half-step off.

I was at a small club in NYC a few years ago, and he dropped by unexpectedly to play a few songs with the house band. The fact that he did so unannounced I thought was really cool, but he was kind of a dick to the sound guy and I had every reason to believe that he was on coke at that time. But I have to admit the man knows his way around six strings.

Let's cut out the sensationalist bullshit. Maybe John Mayer really is 6'2, but maybe we're only hearing one side of the story and he's actually 6'2 or something.

I'm not saying he is 6'2. I'm just saying we should keep an open mind until we hear more.

[–]DJBJ 3 points4 points ago

John has a great sense of humor and was rumored to be getting his own show before he got a little too public as a Poon Hound. Here is on Chapelle Show

He did have a show on MTV or VH1 (I forget which). It only lasted one episode, but I thought it was pretty funny.

I went to a high school with pretty large number of black students, so I had how to learn to shake up both ways. My problem now is when I run into a white person I don't know what to do anymore.

Oh god, this has happened to me with the handshake vs. fistbump. My solution to when this happens is to continue to make is more awkward going "Eh, eh, eh ahaahahah eh?" <That makes sense in my head.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Easy enough to solve. If you're the one doing the handshake to a fist-bumper, just switch gears to the "friendly spider" and let your fingers sort of tickle-crawl up the arm of the fist bumper, quickly and lightly, while looking them in the eyes. By the time you reach their shoulder, you'll know if it's hug time or not.

A year back everyone hated John Mayer because he dropped n-bombs and made questionable comments about black women (amongst other things). Now he does something funny and Redditors love him again?

A talented douchebag is still a douchebag.

Kanye West is so confusing to me. You want to hate the guy because he's a total douchebag but something about his music is likable. To be honest, maybe that's a good thing. We're able to separate his horrible personality and persona from his art. I feel the same way about Jon Mayer. I want to hate the guy but can't. He's extremely talented. You can't deny talent.

[–]RunsLikeAGirl 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Kanye has got to have Asperger's. I can't hate him because I honestly think he can't help it. I like his music, and think he has a lot of talent. So maybe he's not the most personable guy, but he's doing pretty well nevertheless.

[–]Scottush 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Am I the only one who thinks John Mayer is a prick? That and his music is terrible and it doesnt reflect what a talented guitarist he is? He is an amazing guitarist, such a shame he puts out such crap.

[–]OldBoat 5 points6 points ago

Give "John Mayer Trio" a try, it's a lot "bluesier" and his guitar skills really shine through.
