As a suburbanite from Chicago, I must say the city is beautiful. Especially on LakeShore Drive. When you're on the lake and looking back onto the city it looks amazing.

I feel the same about people from Lake Forest, Barrington, Libertyville, etc. At that point they are far closer to Milwaukee than Chicago. People from New Jersey say they are from New Jersey, people from Yonkers, say Yonkers, they don't say New York City. People from San Jose, say San Jose, not San Francisco. People from Oxford or Cambridge don't say they are from London. But somehow with this city, if you're within 100 miles of the city limits you are from "Chicago". Right, it's not my problem you live somewhere you hate, so either move, or tell the truth and say you live in "[town] which is 50 miles north of Chicago". No one gets offended then.

[–]wkdown 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

To be fair, people have heard of those places. No one more than 200 miles from Chicago knows Aurora, Naperville, Cicero, Orland Park, or anything else

I grew up in Chicago and I now live in a suburb that's sits about 5 minutes from what constitutes the actual city, so I just say Chicago. It's easier and cooler.

[–]nature1 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

People tend to not know what Highland Park is, so I'll just stick with Chicago, thank you. But, lol, Naperville, not even close.

[–]LlamaExpert 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Then educate them. Shouldn't you be proud of your home? If you lived in Skokie or Lincolnwood it would be one thing, but Highland Park pretty far into the suburbs.

[–]robotevil 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well just say "I'm from Highland Park, which is about an hour drive north of Chicago".

[–]nature1 0 points1 point ago

I go to a college a couple hours from Chicago, and am surprised when people say they're from Chicago but after checking their Facebook later it says they're actually from Glenview or Hoffman Estates for example. They could at least be truthful and just say they're from Illinois.

As a suburban boy never really been to a big city (barring new orleans), it amazes me how roads are sectioned off so squarely into blocks.

I don't think Calpa deserves down votes for his opinion. I think Chicago is awesome. But there are other approaches to city planning that don't rely on a strict grid system. Witness Paris.

Yep, it's pretty much impossible to get lost in Chicago.

The grid of east/west roads that go by number goes out for a looong way past the city. I live in a suburb ~30 miles south of the city at 195th street.

[–]solar_sun 1 point2 points ago

[–]lecadavredemort 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You can definitely see Oak Park. Look up a google map of Chicago and compare the two. You can kinda see the same grid of the major streets. In the picture you can even see where the grid starts to disappear, so I'm inclined to say you can see as far as Elmhurst.

[–]85Bears 0 points1 point ago

I grew up about 30 miles outside of Chicago. There was a large hill in my town. At night, on top of this hill, you could literally see a dome of orange light covering Chicago.

Now I'm living IN Chicago. At night, the sky is tinted orange and you rarely see stars. It comes with the territory...constant background noise of cars and ambulances, the only place where you can ever be in darkness is your bedroom. It's the price you pay for living in a city with so many people and so much to do. After living here for 5 years, none of that bothers me at all. I love the city way to much to be bothered by it.

However, any time I travel outside of Chicago, I am amazed by the stars in the sky, and regularly make an ass out of myself for getting so giddy about it.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Can I ask where you're living in the city? I'm trying to figure out where I want to move.

[–]dethbunnynet 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

People will say time and again that Chicago is a city of neighborhoods - because it's true. They all have their own personality and benefits. As it's a very individual thing you really need to do some legwork yourself. Assuming you'd like to live on a reasonable budget and want to be near the train, (which are basically my two huge requirements) I'd recommend looking into Logan Square, Lincoln Square, Uptown, or Edgewater.

Edit: Also consider your favorite cuisine if you're into food. If you want excellent Mexican food, you'll be looking somewhere different from if you want excellent Ethiopian, or excellent sushi, or excellent Polish…

Edit2: I would strongly recommend living close to the train because it makes the whole city much more accessible - if you want to explore, the L is the way to do it. It's also super-handy if you go out drinking or whatever and thus driving is not an option. Finally, much cheaper than driving now that gas if $4/gal.

[–]lecadavredemort 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm living in bridgeport. As for the recycling thing, there are ways around it. You just have to take it somewhere yourself instead of getting it picked up which is plenty easy with a car or friends car. It's dirt cheap and a lot safer than most people think. My 2 bed is costing $800 a month, a friend's apartment which is about the same size and condition is costing him $1400 a month in Lincoln Park. I'm comfortable walking around at night and the people here are friendly (albeit a little white trash). If you don't mind a bit of a hike to get to work or to go out on the weekend, I highly recommend it.

[–]aero_eng 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I am also a resident of Chicago and I live in Lakeview. My rent is really high ($1100 for a 1 bed) but I love the neighborhood, very safe. I can see the lake from my apartment and I have a bus stop right out front of my building. It is a 10 minute walk to the red line stop near me and I only ever drive when visiting friends in the suburbs.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've actually been considering Lakeview. I know it's fairly safe for a single gal like myself, and it's worth paying the higher rent for a peace of mind. Thanks for the advice, because I think I have my heart set on Lakeview :) I'd rather pay $1,100 for a nice 1 bedroom than pay $800 for a 2 bedroom in a dangerous neighborhood. I'm still contemplating whether or not I want to take my car or not.

[–]robotevil 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Follow dethbunnynet's advice, don't ask other people which neighborhood they recommend, everyone believes their neighborhood is the best neighborhood. I recommend you come here and spend some time in the city yourself and visit neighborhoods you're interested in living in. Don't make a decision off of someone else's advice.

That's odd. I've never seen one of those, not just at my apartments over the years but not even in any of the alleys. A quick google search turned this up: "However, no money was allocated to Streets and San for 2010. Which means that the roll out of blue carts is currently frozen at about 240,000 buildings. When will the rest of the city receive its blue carts? Right now it's anybody's guess." From chicagorecycling.org. It also includes a map which shows that the blue garbage cans are almost exclusively on the north side, while I live on the south :/

Fuck you, have you ever even been to Detroit?

Nope. Is there anything to be in, in Detroit?

Yes, in fact Detroit has entered into a sort of renaissance in recent years and many of the residents have taken it upon themselves to fix up some of the abandoned buildings as the government isn't doing much.

I'm sorry I was so rude, but so much is going on it Detroit and it just frustrates me when people who've never been here call the city a hopeless wasteland.
