I'm guessing that the photographer had to close the shutter a few times to avoid something else like a vehicle, train or left to right travelling aircraft from spoiling the exposure of what he wanted to capture.

WHOA is the incline really that steep or is it just a compression effect from the camera?

[–]beachresortfrontdesk 24 points25 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

my theory: the incline looks steeper because of the front-on angle it was shot from. if you saw an angle from the side, you'd be better able to see the horizontal change, which would make it more apparent that the incline isn't actually as steep as it seems

[–]base736 15 points16 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Front-on angle and a telephoto lens, I think. Front-on angle alone would give lots of depth in the image and make it seem shallow again. Telephoto lens from a distance would wash out the depth entirely, making things seem steeper.

[–]FirstDivision 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I love that we've apparently invented a phrase "front-on" and I know exactly what it means.

[–]SmokeyDBear 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly. If this was instead shot at around 50mm focal length on a typical size film or sensor then it wouldn't look nearly as steep, even from this angle. The depth information is technically always washed out in a photograph. Without bifocal information, your brain has to guess at distance information based on how large or small similar things appear to be and the whole point of a telephoto lens is to reduce how optically small faraway things are.

If you've ever taken off from John Wayne Airport near Los Angeles (actually, Orange County) this takeoff angle will seem perfectly normal to you.

[–]qpHalcy0n 6 points7 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, the first segment of flight basically has the aircraft maintaining a speed not too terribly high above takeoff speed which results (depending on load, aircraft, and altitude) in a brief rapid climb since takeoff power is maintained for this first portion of flight. Primarily to avoid any obstacles and in the event of engine failure or some other power-off malfunction would allow the captain sufficient altitude to safely navigate to suitable landing location. Subsequently, power is reduced to climb power and the aircraft is accelerated to climb speed which depends on procedure and other local rules.

Aircraft like the Boeing 757 are easily capable of climb rates in excess of 4000ft/min. This rate is sufficient to make your ears pop rather delightfully put your stomach up your throat.

Also because of the perspective-effect of the eye and camera it's going to appear steeper than it is.

[–]mcrbids 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you watch jets, you'll see that they can take off at crazy steep angles when under full power. (Hint: most flights do NOT take off at full power, even in the little planes I fly) Also, certain ultra-high performance planes can maintain near vertical takeoffs. (Hello Patty Wagstaff!) PS: Patty = Hot + airplanes. Wowzers!

This looks like a hard climb (at or near VX) to about 1,000 ft which is typical TPA. (Traffic Pattern Altitude)

Aircraft typically have at least two numbers list for "best" climb speeds: VX (Best rate of climb over distance travelled) and VY. (best rate of climb over time) Usually, VX is about 10-20% slower in airspeed over VY.

great set. I really enjoyed looking through them. I really know nothing about photography but it blows my mind. How do the buildings and stationary lights, etc., not get so overexposed as to ruin the rest of the shot?

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I saw in one comment that he mentions his ND400 filter falling off the end (that's a 9 stop neutral density filter). Maybe the airliner lights are bright enough (relative to surrounding street lights) that he can just stop way down and use a neutral density filter to expose for a very long time.

edit: No-jargon summary: if it's not a photoshop combination (from multiple exposures), it's probably the case that the airplane lights are a lot brighter than the surroundings, so he can expose for a long time (with some tricks to reduce the amount of light coming in) and get good exposures of both the dimmer surrounding lights (exposed for the whole period of time) and the much brighter airplane lights (exposed briefly as the plane moves by).

Ok, added a summary without jargon.

[–]exxonvaldez 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hi, I created the images in the Flickr set. The technique I used for multiple planes was to "stack" individual shots, where each shot is between 30 seconds to 2 minutes long and resembles the OP. "Stack" means to combine images in Photoshop, using the brightest parts of each image. The background can be shot separately if needed, usually an HDR works better because of the large variations in brightness.

I did experiment with neutral density filters to deal with the landing lights of oncoming planes. Later on I chose to only shoot planes from behind because the trails looked better.

Regarding the perspective, it is quite compressed. From other angles it looks more normal. The runways are about 7500 feet long. The other side of the bay is about 9 miles away. When the planes rise to camera level, an elevation of around 400 feet, they are in the middle of the frame.

[–]johnyquest 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thanks for the reply. I appreciate you taking the time to explain that. Your pics are wonderful -- keep up the good work! I've always been interested in photography but really, how many hobbies can one have!?... :P

For the record, is this similar, then, to the technique people are always using to "write" and or "draw" with light in photos?

[–]amansman 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

These pictures mess with my inferred depth perception. I know airplanes don't land and lift off at such steep angles.

[–]PieOverToo 10 points11 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Shooting with a telephoto lens causes the perspective in a photo to be compressed (or rather, standing a long way back compresses perspective, then zooming in close gives the impression the observer is closer than in reality (especially without any visual cues in the photo). It's explained quite well here.

[–]amansman 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's still a little mindbreaking to realize that in those pictures, specifically this one, the other side of the bay is actually closer to the camera than a large portion of all of those flight paths (maybe "light paths" is more appropriate).

Wow, I always thought that helicopters were much more dangerous because the lack of glide ability of the fixed-wing aircraft. I guess I was wrong, as this video demonstrates: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPEJ07ecJvY.

Although it does seem like the pilot has much less time to react due to generally lower altitudes at which helicopters operate.

Actually, no. Being an aeronautical engineer working on my dissertation (stress mechanics, aeroelasticity) I can tell you safely that what you see is the actual angle on inclination.

This may sound a bit technical but bear with me. If the incline is completely flat, then coefficient of friction is for static friction which means inertia is not changing - then you can find the largest angle for which the mass - in this case passengers on the plane, wont slide. This can be done by noting that the maximum force along the length of the incline is modeled simply as the normal force times the coefficient, which you can use to equate with the force from gravity down the incline, hence the actual identical "touchdown" angle.

Still wondering how you obtained 2400 N, if you were using this equation which you should have been using, you wouldn't have gotten this result.

Please go back and check your calculations.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That looks like an unusually steep ascent

[–]PhantomPhun 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You're not seeing the angle of ascent, I.E. "steepness" which is usually only 12 degrees or so. What you're seeing is the rate of ascent, how quickly it's gaining altitude - typically no less than 1000 feet per minute up to as much as 5000 feet per minute. So it's more like a fast elevator, not a steep rocket takeoff.

[–]kamishizuka 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah when I first see these I have trouble remembering that the lights that get captured don't necessarily represent the orientation of the plane.

Love these though.

"For anyone wondering why it's shaped like that - the control systems used on the take off sequence for that plane is causing the plane to overshoot it's set altitude. In control systems, a slight overshoot for a step input usually results in arriving at the steady state value (in this case, altitude) FASTER."

Um, I'm an airline pilot and I don't even understand what you just said.

I think what you're seeing is a pretty smooth level off. Remember this is a time lapse photo, so it isn't going to be perfectly smooth ever. Also there is a pretty quick transition into a right turn right at the first level-off. Notice the outside wing trail is dipping down, while the inside one is rising a little bit.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm not an expert with a camera or anything, but where is the plane? Did it go buy so quick it wasn't captured on the camera?

[–]redditwithafork 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You can set up a camera so that the sensor that captures the picture is SOO sensitive to light that only very bright lights actually burn into the image. The reason you see everything else but the plane is because the camera was kept very still, and the shutter was held open for a very long time, so the rest of the image had enough time to reflect enough light into the camera to be burned into the image as well, since the only thing that was moving was the jet, you're actually seeing the bright lights of the jet many times over. Kimd of like when you move a laser pointer very fast against a wall in a dark room. Your eyes adjust so that the tiny laser dot looks like a line, but its still actually a dot just moving really fast. Put it this way, there are two major adjustments on a camera that control your image, how much light is let in, and how long it stays open. If its open very wide, a LOT of light will come in, so it doesn't need to be open very long, like a fraction of a second, if its only open a tiny bit, it needs to stay open much longer to.capture the same image. In this case it was open very tiny for a long time, so long in face that while it was open the jet moved from the runway to the air before the shutter closed. Hope that makes sense.

That's a cool picture. Looks like the pilot's path is a physical continuation of the landing strip. Which it pretty much has to be.

Wow, that really reminds me of those airplanes in Tron. Probably doesn't help that i just watched that movie.

Long-exposure shots need to be readjusted so everything doesn't look washed out. Something that doesn't emit a lot of light and is only in one part of the shot for a short duration is, compared to every other pixel in the photo, really dark.

In other words, the plane is only in any one location for a very short period of time, so its level of exposure is much much less than the other background scenery--and the lights on the plane, which emit quite strong light and therefore don't need as much time.

After seeing dozens of long exposure highway photos, I thought that this was certainly screwed up. Photoshopped.

Then I realized we have airplanes. Neat.

Just kidding. I'm looking at some shots from coolmandan03's comment, and I'm wondering why the airplane doesn't show up in the pics taken when there was light out...? Surely the plane would blur across the picture.

ND filter.

Basically anything that is moving and not really bright will not show up, as what is behind it is exposed much longer.

DAMNIT. I've been trying to get a shot like this forever. Last time I headed out to our airport I just missed a plane, and waited around in the freezing cold for an hour for another one before I gave up. This is a awesome photo.
