I know this is r/atheism, but I prefer to think of this as Ricky Gervais, summed up.

Ricky Gervais, summed up? I like to think there's more to Ricky Gervais than his atheism. If anything, he's a great writer and comedian. I don't love The Office because it's about being an atheist and that's really what he's known best for.

[–]metrion 4 points5 points ago

I might get massively downvoted for this, but I've always felt Gervais is massively overrated. Being an atheist isn't such a huge deal you know. There's millions of us.

I mean, if he was doing this on his nightly broadcast from Iran while dressed as the Ayatollah Khomeini in drag and having a gin and tonic then ... well I'd take off my hat and eat it.

[–]Hadzy 1 point2 points ago

Listen to his old radio shows on XFM (or the podcasts) that he did with Steve and Karl. Ricky shows what I can only assume is his real side, not the 'character' that he plays for public events. He's intelligent and wise - loves knowledge, compassion, friendship. He's the living person I admire most - not for his writing or comedy (which I think are good, but there are many good writers and comedians out there) - but for his character as a person.

The XFM shows are easily findable out there on the internet. Lots of good clips on youtube if you want a taster.

I agree wholeheartedly. He is rarely funny at all.

[–]junkmanuk -4 points-3 points ago*

Ricky Gervais was funny in the original Office. Since then he's been pretty much the same character in ever film or series he's been in; he's also appeared on stage as that character for awards etc...

It transpires to me that he's not acting, he's just being his asshole self the whole time.

IMO Stephen Merchant is the comic brains behind him much of the time.

edit: MatthewDunn's comment sums it up very nicely for me

edit 2: The Ricky Gervais fanclub amuses me :)

Has anyone got the link to the speech he does at the end of Extras were he completely demolishes celebrity culture, capitalism, and religion in one fell swoop?

[–]inkgrenade 1 point2 points ago

This?

Although I don't see any religion bashing in there. He does address religion in this clip.

[–]Social_fuzz 1 point2 points ago

It was years ago, so I may have things confused because I have seen his standup a few times since. But it was at the very end of Extras. He was basically just talking to the camera for five minutes. Very passionate well rehearsed speech on celebrity culture. (only thing I am sure was in it.) May have even been the last episode.

Bullshit.. Ricky Gervais summed up is

Man who through his partnership with Stephen Merchant and co-writing of one genius sit-com and a half as good follow up; has been able to forge a public persona of feigned arrogance and pseudo-intellectualism despite having very little artistically of comparative value to offer. Is revered by Americans on account of him having an English accent.

[–]burf 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

His logic is not sound. It applies to humans flying because we have an immense amount of empirical evidence to the contrary (people cannot fly without the assistance of an external device or organism). The whole deity thing doesn't have anything in the way of evidence to the contrary. This is why militant atheists are silly.

[–]postguy2 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The whole deity thing doesn't have anything in the way of evidence to the contrary.

Gervais could just say he can fly because he's god. We don't have any empirical evidence against god-men's ability to fly.

Edited for length.

[–]burf 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Again, empirical evidence. All of his physical and behavioural characteristics point toward his being what we know as a standard Homo sapien, thus the burden of proof is still on him. I should clarify on my first statement: if one is to say, unequivocally, that there either is or is not a higher power, the burden of proof is on that individual regardless of which side if the argument they are on.

[–]postguy2 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

if one is to say, unequivocally, that there either is or is not a higher power, the burden of proof is on that individual regardless of which side if the argument they are on.

Yes, this is true, the difference between, "I don't believe" versus "I believe there is not." I think Gervais is saying this in the context of somebody claiming there is a God, with no evidence. If there's nothing that could prove it wrong, there is nothing that could prove it right, so both claims are baseless.

There's a clip on Ricky Gervais discussing his religion here. It's kind of moving listening to how his mind was changed.

Basically it involved him going to Sunday school and his mother telling his brother to keep quiet when he mentioned atheism to Ricky; this in turn made him ponder why an alternative was kept so secret and eventually he says something along the lines of "it all made sense". Cool guy; despite me hating arrogance in religions, he does quite a good job of not being arrogant.

Everyone here needs to see his movie: "The Invention of Lying". Honestly this should be its own post, I watched it yesterday (It's on HBO GO if you are a subscriber). It's one of the best atheist movies I have every seen, and I had no idea going into it that it was going to be a commentary on religion (It made sense once it all started to happen though), I just had assumed it was going to be like an inverse Liar Liar. What's great about it is it doesn't trash religion either, it just depicts why it is so popular and why it exists.

[–]Dave_Hulud 0 points1 point ago

ricky is great, clever funny and is a good spokesperson for atheism. the thing that bothers me about debate or even just expressing views is often how its not about looking for truth or staying close to your philosophical/religous views, but rather about winning or even trying to embarass the other person. ive met many a religious person who i may not agree with on the nature of reality, but whos sense of empathy and humanity has been greater and more endearing to other atheists i know.

I think I know where you are going here, but it's going to take a much better constructed argument than this one to convince me. Uhh, let me just pick out one of my favorite dozen or so horrific wars fought in the name of the Christian/Jewish/Muslim faiths and ask where the morality is there.

Don't confuse religion with faith (aka a belief in a greater being). Personally I have neither, but have many friends who have great faith and I respect them a lot. Of course they are wrong, but I respect them.

Prove to me that religion is a bad way of teaching slow people morality

The fact that the most religious regions of the US are also the least educated and highest in crime, and the more secular regions are more educated and more peaceful?

Now prove I can't fly.
