Ricky Gervais, summed up (imgur.com)
submitted 1 year ago by asardoni
[–]le_whiskey 58 points59 points60 points 1 year ago
I know this is r/atheism, but I prefer to think of this as Ricky Gervais, summed up.
[–]Peatore 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
I really need to watch that show.
[–]Stealyphil1905 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
That's the scene I use to remember SMerch.
[–]BigPapiC-Dog 8 points9 points10 points 1 year ago
And Wheatley!
[–]Kardlonoc -2 points-1 points0 points 1 year ago
Whats he doing there?!
[–]projektdotnet -13 points-12 points-11 points 1 year ago
Except that wasn't him http://half-life.wikia.com/wiki/Stephen_Merchant
[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 1 year ago
As a long time follower of his work, I assure you that is Stephen Merchant. He's shaven and made look different for Extras in this.
[–]projektdotnet -4 points-3 points-2 points 1 year ago
Indeed, my point was Wheatly was not voiced by Gervais but rather by Merchant.
[–]greatkingrat 7 points8 points9 points 1 year ago
And I think BigPapi's point was that "Wheatley" was also in the scene.
[–]projektdotnet 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
That's what I get for not watching the video :-/
[–]headless_bourgeoisie 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago
I was starting to wonder if the payoff would be worth it. It totally was.

I think you are selling Rickey Gervais short if this sums him up
[–]janoo1989 40 points41 points42 points 1 year ago
Ricky Gervais, summed up? I like to think there's more to Ricky Gervais than his atheism. If anything, he's a great writer and comedian. I don't love The Office because it's about being an atheist and that's really what he's known best for.
[–]metrion 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago
"Atheists, summed up", or, "Ricky Gervais' beliefs, summed up" would have been better titles IMHO.

I might get massively downvoted for this, but I've always felt Gervais is massively overrated. Being an atheist isn't such a huge deal you know. There's millions of us.
I mean, if he was doing this on his nightly broadcast from Iran while dressed as the Ayatollah Khomeini in drag and having a gin and tonic then ... well I'd take off my hat and eat it.
[–]Hadzy 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Listen to his old radio shows on XFM (or the podcasts) that he did with Steve and Karl. Ricky shows what I can only assume is his real side, not the 'character' that he plays for public events. He's intelligent and wise - loves knowledge, compassion, friendship. He's the living person I admire most - not for his writing or comedy (which I think are good, but there are many good writers and comedians out there) - but for his character as a person.
The XFM shows are easily findable out there on the internet. Lots of good clips on youtube if you want a taster.
[–]Hadzy 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
I agree wholeheartedly. He is rarely funny at all.
[–]junkmanuk -4 points-3 points-2 points 1 year ago*
Ricky Gervais was funny in the original Office. Since then he's been pretty much the same character in ever film or series he's been in; he's also appeared on stage as that character for awards etc...
It transpires to me that he's not acting, he's just being his asshole self the whole time.
IMO Stephen Merchant is the comic brains behind him much of the time.
edit: MatthewDunn's comment sums it up very nicely for me
edit 2: The Ricky Gervais fanclub amuses me :)
[–]Social_fuzz 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Has anyone got the link to the speech he does at the end of Extras were he completely demolishes celebrity culture, capitalism, and religion in one fell swoop?
[–]inkgrenade 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
This?
Although I don't see any religion bashing in there. He does address religion in this clip.
It was years ago, so I may have things confused because I have seen his standup a few times since. But it was at the very end of Extras. He was basically just talking to the camera for five minutes. Very passionate well rehearsed speech on celebrity culture. (only thing I am sure was in it.) May have even been the last episode.
Yeah, that's the first link I provided. The speech starts at about 0:32.
[–]fuzzb0y 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
Since atheists usually consists of educated scholars and intellectuals, I think it would be in our best interest to spell correctly at least.
[–]Dr9 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
how about "bad teeth, not really all that funny"?
[–]Riktenkay 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
I find Gervais overrated and irritating, but this quote is spot on.
[–]squigs 4 points5 points6 points 1 year ago

PICTURE. OF. TEXT.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago*
Bullshit.. Ricky Gervais summed up is
Man who through his partnership with Stephen Merchant and co-writing of one genius sit-com and a half as good follow up; has been able to forge a public persona of feigned arrogance and pseudo-intellectualism despite having very little artistically of comparative value to offer. Is revered by Americans on account of him having an English accent.
I disagree with the "genius sitcom" part. I hate that fucking show.
The original office was the best sitcom since blackadder.
In your opinion. I can't stand it, and I know I'm not alone.
[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points-2 points 1 year ago
Exacta-fucking-mundo. Could this guy possibly be more overrated among atheists?
[–]paledragon64 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
I fucking love this man.
[–]burf 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
His logic is not sound. It applies to humans flying because we have an immense amount of empirical evidence to the contrary (people cannot fly without the assistance of an external device or organism). The whole deity thing doesn't have anything in the way of evidence to the contrary. This is why militant atheists are silly.
[–]postguy2 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago*
The whole deity thing doesn't have anything in the way of evidence to the contrary.
Gervais could just say he can fly because he's god. We don't have any empirical evidence against god-men's ability to fly.
Edited for length.
[–]burf 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
Again, empirical evidence. All of his physical and behavioural characteristics point toward his being what we know as a standard Homo sapien, thus the burden of proof is still on him. I should clarify on my first statement: if one is to say, unequivocally, that there either is or is not a higher power, the burden of proof is on that individual regardless of which side if the argument they are on.
[–]postguy2 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
if one is to say, unequivocally, that there either is or is not a higher power, the burden of proof is on that individual regardless of which side if the argument they are on.
Yes, this is true, the difference between, "I don't believe" versus "I believe there is not." I think Gervais is saying this in the context of somebody claiming there is a God, with no evidence. If there's nothing that could prove it wrong, there is nothing that could prove it right, so both claims are baseless.

[–]religionisanger 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
There's a clip on Ricky Gervais discussing his religion here. It's kind of moving listening to how his mind was changed.
Basically it involved him going to Sunday school and his mother telling his brother to keep quiet when he mentioned atheism to Ricky; this in turn made him ponder why an alternative was kept so secret and eventually he says something along the lines of "it all made sense". Cool guy; despite me hating arrogance in religions, he does quite a good job of not being arrogant.
And then the guy threw him from the top of a skyscraper and screamed: "See you can’t fly. I proved you wrong."
[–]macattack01 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
I read this in his voice
[–]squigs 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
If I have the ability to fly, why would do I need to prove it? I make a claim and it's up to you whether you believe it or not.
I want his babies.

The entirety of the life and wit of Ricky Gervais is summed up with a pithy quote about his religious stance? Seriously?

Oh good, this picture again.
Welp, I'm about done with this subreddit, someone PM me if r/atheism stops being filled with 14 year olds.
[–]burgerboy426 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago
are you mad about the reposts or mad about people quoting celebrities they can relate with?
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 1 year ago
The reposts, and the general quality of your average r/atheism thread.
I like the quote, but I liked it even more the first twelve times it was on the front page.
[–]burgerboy426 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago
There are a lot of new members and new atheists. it's not like people type ricky gervais into the search to find quotes of his. there is a front page for a reason. so people can see content that is interesting, new or old.
I think it is better overall for one new person to see a quote he's never seen and enjoy it than 10 people to get annoyed by the repost.
I also have a theory that some of us atheists here, me included, have tapped out what the internet has to offer about atheism. the one or two posts a day that are entertaining to the veterans make it seem like the subreddit is getting worse when really I just think the movement has peaked. But I don't complain and whine about it. It's the fucking internet, go look at kittens. You don't have to make your opinion known that you are starting to hate this subreddit, that just turns off new atheists that would otherwise enjoy the material, imo.
I disagree. The reposts and degradation of post quality is starting to become a serious issue with this subreddit.
I also have a theory that some of us atheists here, me included, have tapped out what the internet has to offer about atheism.
Interesting discussion and debate can never be "tapped out". Overused memes and comics are very quickly tapped out.
And you're right, I don't have to state my opinion, but I will anyway. You don't like it? Downvote me, I don't give a fuck.
that just turns off new atheists
Turns them off of what? Atheism? That's ridiculous, atheism is based on science, not the kindness and acceptance of a community. Saying that my post turns new atheists away is like saying that you don't believe in Physics because your teacher was a dick.
Turns them off of what? Atheism?
No, the subreddit. But I guess you could make the point that the posts themselves turn people off. both ways, I guess.
atheism is based on science
no, it's not. and your second point is only valid if I didn't already elaborate what I said above.
I agree to the first point, for the most part. But there are a lot of younger people here that might not have the experience necessary to hold those interesting discussions past the point where, once again, a veteran will enjoy the discussion.
And the memes and comics are just an alternate way of expression. I will never belittle ones choice of expression. Reddit, itself, is a site of memes and comics and it will naturally appear here, anyways.
It's a serious issue to you. And how, might I ask? There are some lines of text on a page that you either have to read past or hide? It seems like you have been here a while and are here all the time, so you have enough time to sort through the good and "bad" posts, which is not that much time at all. And that happens in almost every subreddit, especially the larger ones.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago
Yes it is. We can go back and forth like this until one of us uses some logic, so I guess I'll be the one to do it. Just about every single atheist believes that there is no god due to a complete and total lack of any kind of evidence for the existence of god. If that isn't closely intertwined with science, please explain to me how.
Hence my original statement of, "someone PM me if this subreddit stops being filled with 14 year olds". That wasn't facetious, it was sincere.
And the memes and comics are just an alternate way of expression.
Sure, but how many, "I was dating someone who turned out to be a fundie Christian! OH NO!", "Coming out as an athiest", "Pwning my religious friend" and "Haha, look at this idiot on facebook!" comics/posts are required before it becomes redundant? I say we passed that point a long time ago.
Reddit, itself, is a site of memes and comics and it will naturally appear here, anyways.
Depends where you look. I've unsubscribed from r/pics, r/funny, r/F7U12, r/trees, and now r/atheism, and doing so has vastly reduced the number of memes, increased the quality of the content, and improved the overall Reddit experience. I would say that the worst parts of Reddit are the biggest subreddits.
It's a serious issue to you. And how, might I ask?
This subreddit is going the way of r/pics and r/funny. I value Reddit for its intellectualism, creativity, and fresh content. If a subreddit loses those qualities, I consider that a huge flaw of the subreddit.
It seems like you have been here a while and are here all the time, so you have enough time to sort through the good and "bad" posts, which is not that much time at all. And that happens in almost every subreddit, especially the larger ones.
When the burden of wading through the mire of shitty posts outweighs the enjoyment I get from the subreddit, I unsubscribe. R/atheism passed this point long ago, but unfortunately, and unlike most of the large subreddits, there is not a smaller and more intelligent alternative (to my knowledge). Because of this, I have stayed subscribed to r/atheism for the rare piece of quality content. Today I decided that the quality posts were rare enough that nothing of value would be lost if I unsubscribed.
I respect your right to unsub. Many people say the exact thing you say all the time. Unsub from pics, funny, politics. There are alternatives from what I understand. humor, freethought, skeptic come to mind.
However, to a point I already made. You are complaining about the subreddit becoming worse, in your opinion. But to someone new, it might be the bees knees and seeing your post might discourage them from producing new content, which in turn snowballs into no one but FB posts and memes. I might just be speculating, sure. I like to theorize.
Now back to the science point. I would say that there are atheists that come to atheism through science negating the doctrine of their specific religion. But that does not define atheism. atheism is not based on anything. atheism is a position to a claim. people might use science to back up that claim, but you don't have to. Well, I guess you could if you use the BROAD definition of science as "collection of knowledge" or whatever. So someone's stance on the theistic claim might be based on science, but it is not requisite for taking the atheistic position.
Good discussion. None of us are throwing poop. Always nice.
Ironically, this discussion about the current state of r/atheism has been a hell of a lot more intelligent than the vast majority of content on r/atheism. Thanks for your time.

Everyone here needs to see his movie: "The Invention of Lying". Honestly this should be its own post, I watched it yesterday (It's on HBO GO if you are a subscriber). It's one of the best atheist movies I have every seen, and I had no idea going into it that it was going to be a commentary on religion (It made sense once it all started to happen though), I just had assumed it was going to be like an inverse Liar Liar. What's great about it is it doesn't trash religion either, it just depicts why it is so popular and why it exists.
It was more about social constructs than just about religion.
[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 1 year ago
That shit is one of the best atheist movies ever? That does not say a lot for the genre of atheist movies...
[–]davey984 -3 points-2 points-1 points 1 year ago
Gervais hasn't made that many films as yet but this is by far the worst.
[–]adzug -2 points-1 points0 points 1 year ago
ricky is great, clever funny and is a good spokesperson for atheism. the thing that bothers me about debate or even just expressing views is often how its not about looking for truth or staying close to your philosophical/religous views, but rather about winning or even trying to embarass the other person. ive met many a religious person who i may not agree with on the nature of reality, but whos sense of empathy and humanity has been greater and more endearing to other atheists i know.

facepalm
I think I know where you are going here, but it's going to take a much better constructed argument than this one to convince me. Uhh, let me just pick out one of my favorite dozen or so horrific wars fought in the name of the Christian/Jewish/Muslim faiths and ask where the morality is there.

Westboro Baptist Church.

Don't confuse religion with faith (aka a belief in a greater being). Personally I have neither, but have many friends who have great faith and I respect them a lot. Of course they are wrong, but I respect them.
Prove to me that religion is a bad way of teaching slow people morality
The fact that the most religious regions of the US are also the least educated and highest in crime, and the more secular regions are more educated and more peaceful?
Now prove I can't fly.
