Camel through the eye of a needle huh?

[–]craiggers 29 points30 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think the "Eye of the Needle" is the name of his new camel-transporting jet.

[–]ImNakedHowBoutYou 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The actual translation is "rope" through the eye of a needle, which makes a lot more sense. The "camel" is a very oft-quoted mistranslation.

[–]halfmanmonkey 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Citation?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The way I heard it was that "Eye of the needle" also referred to some sort of rock formation that would be extremely tough to get a camel through.

[–]ShasOFish 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And a T-16, but Luke did it anyway.

[–]SafeSituation 3 points4 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The linked article says that the formation has been referenced, but "'there is no historical evidence to support this'. The context of His teaching does not place Him around camels or city gates, and with 'no historical evidence to support' the idea that He was indeed referring to a camel going through a city gate, it seems to me quite a stretch to assume Bullinger is right."

[–]narky1 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I heard it was just a hole into a place that was only big enough for a man or his animal, but not everything at once ..

But this : http://www.biblicalhebrew.com/nt/camelneedle.htm says that's wrong.

[–]doctorcrass 3 points4 points ago

either way it doesn't fit.

[–]yoda133113 4 points5 points ago

True, but a statement that goes against some of the longest and most popular translations of the Bible without a citation is kinda pointless and pretty much begs for a "Citation?" request.

I remember a pastor in a church I went to as a kid explaining in a sermon that "Eye of the Needle" was the special title of a specific gate through the walls of Jerusalem that was only just barely big enough to let one camel through at a time.

I have extremely high confidence that he was just making it up on the spot ;)

My uncle used to be one of his body guards. I am Edit: "church questionable" because of that.

Basically what used to happen was when they would travel to events, Benny Hinn and his people would rent out like 20 rooms (nicest rooms available) and say "order what ever you would like to eat..." Im talking 50,000 for a two day stay.

But it gets better (or worse). Look for the videos of all the wheel chairs and oxygen tanks being brought up on stage during his "performances". The crowd is made to believe that there were taken from "healed" individuals in the crowd... In fact, a 25' trailer was where they kept these "props" for each "show".

Little old ladies gave all their money to this man and "god".... Yet "lived" on a diet of cat food and tap water...Think im joking... Its documented.

Jesus said: Beware of the [preachers], who like to walk around in long robes, and love respectful greetings in the market places, and chief seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets, who devour widows’ houses, and for appearance’s sake offer long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation. (luke 20:46-47)

To say you're anti-church because of Benny Hinn is like saying you're anti-sports because you found out professional wrestling is scripted. That guy was the most laughable and disgusting so-called Christian for decades until the WBC showed up.

[–][deleted] 109 points110 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think he's worse than the WBC (and there have been other pastors like him). The WBC just say nasty things. This guy actively preys on people's faith to take their money.

[–]moogle516 36 points37 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

WBC doesn't steal people's money, sure they piss people off for a short time but they aren't preying on tens of thousands of unsuspecting people and taking advantage of them by liquidating their entire life savings and crippling their standards of living to absyml levels.

Say what you will but Benny Hinn is way worse and evil then WBC.

Oral Roberts another Charelton like Benny Hinn liquated one of my close families members entire bank account, and made them go even crazy. people like this deserve to be shot in the face upon site.

The ones that use those manipulation techniques. It's not that hard to spot some people who clearly teach non-Christian stuff.

And many people go to those conmen because they promise unconditional wealth and joy and health, to live like a total victor, so on and so forth because that's what matters to them. It's non-sense o sell that and call it Christian no matter how much those people try.

[–]maleman 8 points9 points ago

Elderly infirm people are the ripest to pick, just look at all those ads on tv for pledges and direct debit donations. An old lady nearby got into all sorts of crap by pledging money to this that and the other that she couldn't pay, nursing homes are the same in some cases.

All this begging should be stopped, or at least measures put into place to stop older people getting into a terrible mess because of the way they push them.

Devil's Advocate here: It's not right to prey on anyone, especially the vulnerable, but these people are fucking morons.

No, im anti church because of my Uncle. I have no longer the ability to trust those who are using a people belief system for financial gain. It was an eye opener to learn that he was in the motivation of completing the same task. Some how my family can accept that, yet my questioning religion in general is forbidden. Its about priorities.

[–]GunnerMcGrath 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well I totally agree with you that you should not trust people who use religion for financial gain. But please don't think that all churches, or even a large minority, are tricking people for the sake of getting rich. It happens, and it's despicable, just as pedophile clergymen are despicable, but it in no way represents the norm.

[–]Mr-Papple 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I haven't condemned all Churches yet.. And I probably wont ever...

And of course, I understand the NEED for individuals to attend a church... Its an easy and accepted way to find fellowship. If anything I commend those who are accepting to EVERYONE.

Sadly, I also attended a bible camp as a youth. Although the practice of religion happened during the morning and then immediately after dinner, I was not pleased with seeing 7 year old children crying out in psychological anguish as they "accept" Jesus into their simple minds. You know what that does to a child that age... It scares them into believing something someone else wants them too.. and I personally think that trait follows at least 40% of them through life...

[–]PriscaDoulos 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That overemotional stuff is just bad and meaningless and I agree not even Christians should send their child there or attend to a church that applies the same manipulative techniques. I believe this all boils down to bad doctrine.

[–]OCedHrt 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is the part that I don't get. $200 million is a lot of donations. From a lot of people. But they keep getting downplayed as a very small minority. How bad does it have to get before it is recognized as a problem?

It's just like molesting pastors, except this time it's your bank account.

[–]GunnerMcGrath 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

What I'm mainly focusing on is that Benny Hinn is one very well-known fraud who is an extreme minority among all the pastors in the world, just as the pedophiles are a small minority of all priests. Doesn't mean it's not a problem, it's absolutely a problem, and any sane person would try to talk anyone out of donating money to this idiot. I would also say that the people who believe this guy probably don't have much of a concept of Christianity in general. They're either delusional or just so desperate to get better from their sickness that they're willing to try anything. It's very sad and offensive.

[–]babycheeses 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not really, no.

[–]eloquentnemesis 1 point2 points ago

The difference between Benny and a standard church is that he knows it is a scam and is therefore more effective in getting donations with theater and preying on the weakest minded.

[–]SpudgeBoy 1 point2 points ago

So, just how many plants did Hin have with him. There are lines of people waiting to be hit with the holy jacket.

[–]Mr-Papple 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You would be surprised... A majority of the people who went up were the real deal.... I remember one story about how a lady with lupus came up and claimed she was cured.... They turned her away and took her to a back room and "prayed" with her...

[–]SpudgeBoy 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You're saying that a lot of the people falling down after getting hit by the jacket are not plants? Wow, simply amazing.

Me and a buddy went to see a comedian at the Improv one time and the opening act was a hypnotist. We were sitting in the front row and the guy asks for volunteers. We were like hell yeah. SO, we ducked under the bar height table we were at and went up and took a seat. The hypnotist did a thing where he said he was going to test who could be hypnotized. Of course me and my buddy were chosen as ones that "could not be hypnotized." But we didn't get up and stayed in our seats and pretended to be "sleeping." He leaned over and said "If you guys fuck up my show I will have you bounced out on your asses." So, we waited until the middle of his act, stood up and went straight to the manager and told him what the dude said. We got free passes to a night when the hypnotist wouldn't be there, a free drink and we fucked up his show. Ever since that time, I always wonder how many plants people like the hypnotist and Hin bring with them.

[–]skarcasm 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There are videos of the ENTIRE AUDIENCE falling down. When I was little, I went to one of the shows. It's all hype and hysteria and talking emphatically. It was really easy to buy into when I still believed in that.

The falling down thing is a pentacostal/non-denominational staple. I saw it in every church I ever attended. My dad was a pastor and he did it too.

Why don't we start with what is wrong with this title?:

1) This is not "everything wrong with America".

2) The article stated that the ministry collected $200 million a year (not the Pastor).

a) Receipts (collections) are not equivalent to profit (what one 'makes').

b) The article stated that the ministry asked for donations for a plane (not the pastor).

Many organizations abuse tax exempt status. Perhaps it should be eliminated or considerably restricted.

[–]deltusverilan 54 points55 points ago

I'm sorry to have to break this to you, alecb, but America did not invent religion. Nor did it invent tax-free status for religious organizations. Nor did it invent con men. Nor, most importantly, is it the only place in the modern world where these things can be found. I will remind you that Europe is chock full of Catholics, and the Catholic church is the organization the successfully bullied the governments of the western world into not imposing taxes on them.

Cause it's the exploitive douchebags in charge of our banking system and wall street that fucked up the economy. It's the explotive douchebags in our political system that are trying to strip our rights while pointing at single issues like Abortion or terrorism for why they need to 'suspend' our rights. And it's the exploitive douchebags in religion who robe the faitful blind and mislead thousands with false prophet talk of AIDs curing coats.

The root of America's problem is exploitive douchebags.

I keep forgetting that there are people like this in the world, and that they are the basis for my reasoning that I am completely free to do whatever the hell I feel like doing with my time and with my life.

So, thanks, crazy-ass worthless pastor man. Thanks.

I'm gonna go play a game of softball, and maybe smoke some marijuana beforehand.

It doesn't say the Benny Hinn makes $200 Million a year... it says his organization does. Still an evil man, but that's just not what the article says.

My parents used to attend some of his preaching circuits when he was still gaining popularity. Then after several times doing so, they attended one where he was preaching a sermon as usual, then suddenly stopped in the middle of talking about the Holy Spirit. He then declared "In fact, the Holy Spirit is right in this room, right this minute! Look, he is descending upon me...oh! My hands! They are covered with the blood of Christ! Look! Look at the blood!" while holding his hands up to the audience and cameras. My parents immediately left and never watched him again. After that sermon, he began to dress in all white and do things like that on a regular basis in addition to ripping people off.

This is all over the place. I was in Texas and my friends church he told me needs funds to keep both branches open. One is downtown and the other is about a 20minute drive to the suburbs. Would be acceptable however the pastor takes a helicopter between the two places.

It's funny you submitted this, as I have a small personal story relevant to this. I live in a town of about 10000 people. My wife and I were driving to the local ice cream shop, and we saw one of our local pastors driving a late model BMW Z-3 convertible with the top down. I turned and made the comment, looks like someone's been dipping in the collection plate. How is this justifiable, much less even possible in such a relatively small community?

[–]GodHatesChristians 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You can't ask people to put aside their logic to believe in a magic man in the sky and then get upset when that missing logic leads them to support a miracle worker acting on behalf of the big guy. The problem here is that religion is a culture of false hope predicated on easing fear of mortality that inevitably makes followers easy to control and manipulate.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

You haven't seen the Imams and Shahs do their TV rants to destroy the infidels. Most other religions don't do it because they don't have resources. You haven't seen the pope on TV? Do you have any idea how rich the Vatican is?

It may be in a different form, but it's still the evil of religion.

[–]ChaosBeast 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

All religions require absolute belief in them. Absolute belief is very easily exploited by all manner of snake-oil salesmen. And yes, they all do have their own versions of this douche in one form or another.

They're all scams regardless, just because some of them are positively big business type scams and all the rest are relatively small scale scams is irrelevant.
