A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), weight loss photos, posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. Weight loss photos go in /r/loseit, DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Ok.. I had to look at Wikipedia (because I always thought they slept standing up) and I came across this really weirdly interesting article about how different animals sleep.

Some tid-bits:

But for an average of 9 minutes each night they (ostriches) would lie on their sides, stretch their necks and legs out on the ground, and sleep deeply, during which time they could not be roused by lights or noises (except the very loudest noises)

Elephants have been photographed propping themselves up against termite mounds and other structures when lying down to sleep, and in captivity they have been reported to construct 'pillows' from straw.

Woodpeckers are also reported to sleep clinging vertically to vertical trunks

Nice find. It has another picture of a giraffe sleeping with different posture. http://scienceblogs.com/tetrapodzoology/sleeping_baby_giraffe.jpg

All I can think is how sore your neck would be after waking up.

I bet giraffe necks have evolved some thing to make it less painful than it would be for a human. Like they have way more muscles in their neck so I bet the joints are looser and bigger, so they crick less easily.

But yeah, ouch

I've never been curious about this to be honest, but now that I've seen it, I find it interesting. Thanks for posting.

Did you also know that giraffes only need 1.5 hours of sleep per day? Those animals are boss.

[–]I_Wont_Draw_That 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I assume they evolved to sleep less because it's hard to evade predators when your neck is so sore from sleeping that way.

Another interesting fact - the little stubs on it's head store blood, so that it doesn't pass out from the head rush when lifting it's head considering how long it's neck is and how difficult it is to get blood up there... or something like that.

I heard it at a zoo and am too lazy to look up the exact details.

I wish I could see how the sleeping position progressed as their necks were elongating over their evolutionary history.

[–]Beararms 0 points1 point ago

My greyhound likes to sleep in a position like that, too.

[–]Beararms 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

greyhounds necks are only like half so long as that, maybe a meter

[–]Lyme 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Seriously though, I've seen my greyhound curl up with his head on his butt. He's extra-long and pointy.

[–]Beararms 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

no your right they definitely sleep like that, they just curve their body more so their neck doesn't look like a hose

I'd hate to see an extra long and pointy greyhound, some of my friends already find them terrifying

[–]Lyme 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Aw, terrifying greyhound? Most of them are are pretty timid.

Shit, if I lived in Africa I'd creep up on a sleeping giraffe and judo chop the living shit out of its neck, literally, and then drag it back home to feed my family. Pretty much ezmode to survive in the African wilderness if you know how to hunt.

i had walked for 10 years. 10 long years. i wandered&walked along the earth, pondering the question over and over and over. i could not come to any conclusion. the question that burned so deep inside of me for all these years was as distant as the stars. it was a puzzle i thought i could never solve. i asked friends, relatives, even strangers in the street. No-one knew. Nobody. Not even wikipedia or google. But all of a sudden there came the answer to the question that had tormented me all those long nights, those days of endless torture.

how do giraffes sleep? a bit curled up like a dog .lol wtf

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

After examining the bones of the velociraptor, new evidence suggests (contrary to Jurassic Park's depiction) that the dinosaur actually had feathers.
