Yeah, the first thing I immediately though of was "someone's going to put their dick in that thing and there's going to be a lawsuit."

[–]nickpickles 15 points16 points ago

If something has even the faintest circle or oval cut out of it, chances are some dude has put his dick into it.

The other rule is brought to us by Steve Almond in Candyfreak: "And then, as if we weren't bamboozled enough, there was the sleek red package, which included a ruler on the back and thereby affirmed the First Rule of Male Adolescence: If you give a teenage boy a candy bar with a ruler on the back of the package, he will measure his dick."

Already exists, I have a stand mixer (US plug) with a ring hole like that. It does in fact make it way easier to pull the plug out.

edit: apparently it's everything Breville makes

[–]Soshta 21 points22 points ago

I have a Breville juicer that has this kind of plug. I think most of their appliances have it.

But it doesn't have that cool glowy ring! It's okay I guess.

No glowy ring!!! Wait we got it... We'll just put a really bright red LED on the front of it for when its off... That ougghta look cool.

Its because of people like you that my room suffers light pollution at night... how am I suppose to look through my telescope at night to look at the glow in the dark stars that cover my ceiling?

This obviously wasn't made for computers, probably just things like lamps or chargers.

[–]timothj 23 points24 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Is this too obvious to note? It's a safety and longevity upgrade; making it easier to pull the plug by holding the plug instead of the cord makes the cord-plug connection last longer. I've had to put new plugs on a lot of lamps and vacuum cleaners, and the new plugs were usually less well-anchored than the original ones.

[–]YesShitSherlock 8 points9 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think someone should sell ring-plug extensions. Just inch long male/female plugs with a ring in the middle to plug into your cord and keep there permanently.

Edit: Something like this splitter: http://imgur.com/O4cU9 But with just one plug on the other side and a ring like in the original post.

I'm on a laptop with no mouse and I have no idea how to use GIMP, so this is the best illustration I could do: http://imgur.com/BACrw

Male prong on right, female extension on left, ring to pull it out of the socket on top.

[–]RedditUser1186 5 points6 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It doesn't just make it easier, it also makes it more obvious. Consumers are dumb. People don't know/aren't thinking about how they should unplug it. I would bet anything that if you put this in a trial against a standard plug a greater percentage of people would unplug it by grabbing the plug instead of pulling on the cord.

Now think about the elderly or someone with a disability.

Elderly people fear electricity.

The disabled derive unnatural strength from electricity.

Neither group needs access to it.

[–]iambecomedeath7 10 points11 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As an amputee, I can confirm that I gain the strength of twenty men when attached to an electrical outlet.

[–][deleted] 21 points22 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you press peanutbutter into the lower outlet, it pushes the plug out of the top receptacle via hydraulic action.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Today's engineering schools really don't emphasize the usefulness of the electro-hydraulic force enough.

[–]Ptoot 2 points3 points ago

[–]SgtBaxter 2 points3 points ago

Elderly people have old ass lamps and appliances, and the plugs on those are never tight so they just about fall out of the socket anyway.

[–]rikbrown 9 points10 points ago

Indeed, that's right. I remember the moment Her Majesty revealed she had invented the three-pronged plug to us.

I think I was 7 or 8 then, but I remember it vividly - our entire family crowded around the television (black and white, back then, as it was another few years until Her Majesty gave us colour TV) for the Queen's Address. When she showed the plug, we knew that all of our lifes would change from that day onwards.

[–]h4l 10 points11 points ago

Aside from the grip, the cable points down rather than straight out, so you can put furniture in front of the socket closer to the wall.

[–]renesisxx 10 points11 points ago

purchase, it's triangular with a ridge which allows easier extraction when the plug is gripping the pins.

Also it's internally fused and earthed which makes it far safer.

Can someone please explain why internally fused plugs are STILL not standard in America/Europe? I realise that we can be known to go a bit over the top on health and safety here, but this is one thing which has always been a good idea and no doubt lifesaver.

[–][deleted] 26 points27 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well in Europe and America the people are a lot less valuable.

For example one blonde missing English child = roughly 60 earth quake victims

[–]J-M-E 4 points5 points ago

[–]squigs 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think it's different standards for internal wiring. We use a ring main that can take up to 30 amps, and plug in equipment with a cable that can handle 15 amps. Other countries (presumably) don't use a ring so don't need the extra fuse since they can rely on the fuse in the main fusebox.

[–]drtekrox 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I don't know about US/Europe but in Australia all homes since the mid-90's have required a switchboard RCD on all switched circuits.

[–]rif 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Because you have a residual-current device (RCD) together with the circuit breakers at the board where is distributed in the home.

[–]SteveJEO 1 point2 points ago

The only actual description you could give it which could in any way be justified is 'Cunning' even.

Earthed, Polarised, Insulated and Fused. With the earth being longer than the live and neutral to effectively switch the socket on as the plug is inserted.

One of the few logical and elegant solutions to shitty global electrical design in general.

You are right, it's pretty and absolutely impractical because it's too elongated. That's why these plugs have become popular in Europe.

Very cool! However, I'm forever a disciple of the flat plug. Works great when you want furniture as close to the wall as you can manage.

They come in all sorts of flavors.

I think that this design will help plug to last longer.Because so many people pull them by the cable

[–]spherecow 2 points3 points ago

it looks cool, but it's more expensive to manufacture, waste more energy (though probably not much), and have more things that could break...

US plugs usually have a pronounced ridge on the back that makes it easier to unplug stuff than European plugs.

If i'd use something like that where I live, I would just unplug the socket out of the wall.

For the people who are complaining, I am a healthy early 20's male who thinks this design is long overdue. Some outlets are in places that make it difficult to remove the power cable and some for whatever reason have a death grip on the power cable and some are both. When that kind of thing occurs often you can only pull the power cable out half way before having to readjust and get better leverage which, if you don't want to damage your cable, is right around the plug. And do you know what can happen when you do that? What has happened to me on several occasions? Electrocution, its not fun and really hurts. So have a ring where I know I won't come into contact with electricity is pretty awesome.

[–]hultsb 1 point2 points ago

Wait... what happened to the danger of getting electrocuted that made electrical outlets so much fun?

[–]morleydresden 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Fuck that noise. Just make the connections between the plug and cable strong enough that I can wrench it out from across the room with risking fraying.

How hard is it to pull out a plug?

[–]nihil161 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm sorry but that's just a terrible design. You can't put anything against it. Now maybe if somehow you could combine this idea with the plug that lays flat against the wall. Now that would be revolutionary!

[–]SenTedStevens 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That doesn't help when the plug is connected to a power strip buried beneath a desk that you can't reach.

[–]DimeShake 1 point2 points ago

What problem does this solve? Is it seriously that hard to pull out a plug? I mean, I don't think I've ever had a problem gripping the fucker and tugging a bit.

Fantastic design unless your light sockets are behind a dresser or a bed. Good luck pulling them or plugging them in. Not furniture friendly.

[–]notimea9z 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's not like the entire cord acts as a handle giving you ample standoff from the contacts. Overdesigned for flash not functionality. Sick of designers spending time on novel redressings of non-problems in neglect design challenges worthy of their skills.

No, because a led is basically a diode that emits light. It would serve as his own rectifier (turning AC into DC), thus only requiring a resistor to limit the current flowing through it. It would however blink, but your eyes can't see something blinking 60 times per second.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

No, because a led is basically a diode that emits light.

LED = Light Emitting Diode.

Well, yeah.

[–]iheartbakon 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I can detect the blinking. Also, by the looks of that plug, it appears to be European so the frequency would be 50 Hz so even easier to see the blinking.

[–]rationaliberal 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, you are wrong. LEDs (light emitting diodes) will work with AC, just at a <50% duty cycle. Because the voltage on the line alternates between -/+ 60 times per second, half of that time the voltage is such that it can flow through the diode. Just add a resistor and, if you want, a small capacitor and the LED will work just fine.

[–]Chicken-n-Waffles 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

OK, neon lamp. That shit used to be everywhere in the 60s. I still have plugs with them in it as brittle as they may be.

[–]DoesNotTalkMuch 7 points8 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

AC current is easily converted into DC current. Diodes (the D in LED) only work in one direction, it would be possible to include the converter in the plug itself.

What's with all the "Pfft. Steel tools. I think most men are strong enough to continue using the standard stone tools. Sure steel might stay a little sharper, but I don't think it's going to make a huge difference in my wood-chopping life."?

Why would anyone ever argue against an improvement whose cost is near zero? I could understand if they wanted an extra 40 bucks for a plug like this, but that's obviously not the case.

[–]RancidTangerine 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

...Is it really getting that difficult to unplug a power cord? Maybe this 'new enhanced design' will help children and old ladies, but I really don't think my unplugging experiences will be altogether changed for the better because of a hole. Mediocre.

[–][deleted] 27 points28 points ago

On some of the outlets around my house when you plug something into them they get stuck and when you pull them out they try to bring the entire wall outlet with them.

[–]Athelfirth 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This design would present the same problem. The only way to get around that is to hold the outlet cover against the wall with one hand and pull out the cord with the other.

I don't get what you say. This is an improvement that makes it easier to unplug a power cord, uses less material than the old solution and, as fas as I can see, has no negative side effects. It's not going to change the world but what is it not to like about it?

[–]OxyHydro 1 point2 points ago
