Looking for an image subreddit with minimal rules? Check out /r/images

A place to share interesting photographs and pictures. Feel free to post your own, but please read the rules first (see below), and note that we are not a catch-all for general images (of screenshots, comics, etc.)

Spoiler code

Please mark spoilers like this:
[text here](/spoiler)

Hover over to read.

Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

Exactly my thought. Between stupid teddy bears and your new or now dead pets, this and the other waterfall page on the frontpage are what I like to see. Stuff I can maybe show my friends, "look, I found a cool picture!"

[–]ErikHK 33 points34 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, I don't think my friends would be all that entertained by "look, this guy just got a new dog!" "who?" "this guy! On the Internet!" "..."

[–]quitelikeme 18 points19 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, if you think about it, that's exactly what the core problem is. Now if you tell someone else "Some guy on the Internets got a new dog!" - sounds pretty much stupid.

But it isn't really different when I read reddit, I mean I don't know anyone here, so why the hell should I care about your dog, or what your kids wrote, or what your wife did for you? That's personal stuff, keep it to yourself, or to your ACTUAL friends, because they might care, I certainly don't.

[–]sheerheartattack 3 points4 points ago

[deleted]

[–]hiddenlakes 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, Ocarina and Portal are in a class of their own. I always think about how future generations will remember these games. Like even though Ocarina's graphics are crappy by today's standards, they're crappy in a timeless way. They don't detract from the gameplay because it's just that good, and even playing it for the first time kids still love that game. In the future, I'm sure we'll have stuff I can't even conceive of now, but I bet Portal will still be appreciated and loved.

[–]Bengt77 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I played Ocarina of Time for the first time when it appeared on the Virtual Console. (When was that? Three or four years ago, I'm guessing.) Loved it to pieces. Still do. Definitely one of my favorite games now, too. Right behind Deus Ex and The Wind Waker. God I love those two games. Portal and Portal 2 are great, too.

[–]hiddenlakes 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I loved Wind Waker too. A lot of die hard Zelda fans didn't because it was too much of a stylistic change, but I thought it was a great spin on the series.

[–]Bengt77 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, I know. Too bad for them. They don't know what they're missing out on (at least the ones that didn't finish it because of the graphics). The game's atmosphere, plot development and mechanics are all just great. And even the graphics work beautifully for the game, I think.

[–]QuintessentialNerd 27 points28 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My first guess was an abandoned mine shaft filled with water from a rerouted stream (the added minerals could explain why its so green with algae), but rocks look a bit too smooth for that to be the case. Maybe they mined/quarried at the bottom of a naturally formed pit?

[–]davey_darling 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'd have thought that it's just a ladder for a swimming hole.

[–]LegoLegume 13 points14 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

That'd be my guess. It could just be that it's so long because they couldn't attach it to the rock so they just made it long enough to reach bottom.

[–]iigloo 2 points3 points ago

[–]less_identifiable 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Glad to see someone say this. Climbing out with tanks on your back is awkward enough, and I see objects underwater that made me assume it was a cave entrance. I've always wanted to go for my cave-diving cert! Awesome that you know exactly which cave system!

[–]snackpower 8 points9 points ago

Dude everyday you submit hundreds of photos from other peoples filckr accounts. Further more you don't even attribute. I am now going to log on whenever isee your post to pics and downvote you on principle sir.

[–]hey_zeus 43 points44 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

While I understand your position, and mostly agree, alot of people have found some value in being shown this picture today, and what's so bad about that? Reddit karma is essentially worthless anyway. It's like internet Fiat.

[–]ggfunnymail 33 points34 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I too am torn, because I find flicker to be really annoying and like pics hosted on imgur because its clean and easy and always looks the same. The shitty thing about this is the OP KNEW who to attribute the photo to and didn't. While his reddit karma is worthless the whole internet knowing the name of the guy who took that picture and having the option to find other work by him is not so worthless. Without digging in the comments you wouldn't find this information. OP could host on imgur but at least give the guys name.

[–]YourMomSaidHi 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's very difficult for some people to understand that if people want to see stuff, they will upvote it, and if people do not want to see stuff they will downvote it. Those guys that just sit around memorizing how people post and memorizing anything that has been posted in the last 6 years are idiots. The upvoting and downvoting system works just fine. Just ignore people who talk about reposting or posting ethics. This is a website for posting whatever the fuck you want (with obvious exceptions) and people upvote or downvote. The system is perfect.

[–]goodolarchie 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, you're right..

and it's okay to share and spread photographic goodness around the web, but FFS give credit where credit is due. If I take a great photograph and get a lot of due praise for it, I'm much more likely to take and post more. Not reddit karma, real world karma!

[–]unceasingfaun 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, but he still sifted through those pictures and bringing us stuff that we obviously like, as it was upvoted. I don't get what he did wrong? I don't think he was taking credit for this picture, just sharing it

[–]mattsoave 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He could have posted the picture while giving the guy credit.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly. Instead of linking to imgur.com he could actually link to the site where he found it, this way that site gets the traffic it deserves, the reddit bump if you will.

[–]sabreToothBucket 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

who cares, really? It's about sharing. Maybe if Karma was worth something this would matter. I'm glad this isn't the usual crappy, overused, dumb meme, badly photoshop variety we usually see.

[–]Busangod 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Not getting involved in your point/argument, but you are one serious redditor if you notice that sort of thing. God bless your free time, sir (or ma'am, but most likely, sir)

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Maybe. Here is my reddit routine: open the window to reddit not logged on. I do this for a variety of reasons. It lets me see what the common folk of reddit are doing on this site. It updates the current meme flavor for my database. Then after no more than about 3 and no less than one link I will quickly log in taking me away from common links. If you have been to this site for any period of time you start to notice cycles in your routine. Well there are always a million things from AMA/pics/politics/worldnews on the front page. Well in random clicking from the rare non cat pic from pics There was a good picture. Might of been of a pool with a ladder or might have been some random picture of south korean pagoda. I notice the submitting person name to be Mind_Virus . Why that is an interesting name. And I click on him and see the things he has been submitting. Behold a trove of pics with catchy title names. You know those names that just stick in your head. They feel good on your grey ridges. They are like a mental handjob if you will. They feel nice and in association with the picture it is almost like a little story just for you! Exactly a Mind_Virus.
I bet you did not even think about this when you clicked that link and then went to look at the comments. Why that link? Just because (imgur.com) at the end? Or could it be the thumbnail? The witty tag line? or maybe the explicitly non witty tagline that actually refers to some mundane part of the picture( you know you have been fapping to a picture entitled "Oh look futurama's on")?
Think about how deeply you have been manipulated just to click that link. The mind virus gotcha. Did you even consider the depth of this users troll?
I really would not be surprised to find out that this user is one of two things:
A.) a clear savant of the internet who elegantly navigates the great expanse of data that is the collective unconsciousness of humanity.
B.) a marketing whore who is data mining to collect data as to better manipulate the great mind of humanity via the internet.

So the next time you are about to clicky, Check the name and the title and ask yourself "why?"

I agree. Ever since swimming in a log infested creek in PA as a kid, I've wanted my land stuff on land and my water stuff in the water. Land stuff lurking under the water is just creepy.

I vividly remember my screams as a kid thinking a creature was trying to grab my legs from underwater in a river. Looking back my mates mum was probably right when she said it was just tree laying under water. But at the time I screamed my head off

That water is crystal clear! There's a glare on the water that makes it hard to see in but it looks like you can see at least a good 20 or 30 feet down. Most ponds/rivers/lakes you only get 2 - 3 feet. I'm guessing if you were there in person you'd be able to see everything in that basin.

The green water suggests it was probably a copper mine before it was flooded.

[–]sabreToothBucket 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Copper reacts with Air (oxidisation) and not water. If this were the case we'd all have green water coming out of our taps.

Amazing picture, love how it seems as if it was a different set below the water thanks to the refraction and the how the algae moved by the current looks like flat steps instead of bars. Thanks for showing us this, it's amazing. It also seems to be one of the higher resolutions online :).

Sweet pic, but the title's misleading. Came here expecting a deep ladder in a waterfall, only to find a ladder in a deep pool fed by a waterfall. Carry on.

[–]nobodyspecial 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's weird how the ladder curves.

I would have thought it would have jutted off at a different angle than the portion that's above water but wouldn't have expected a curve. It's as if the index of refraction varies with the water depth.

[–]Swipecat 19 points20 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The close-view perspective means that the rays of light from the top of the ladder strike the water-air boundary at a much shallower angle on their way to the camera, when compared with the light from the bottom of the ladder, and that shallower angle means stronger refraction near the top of the ladder.

Edit: After seeing some of the creative explanations here, I've poked a perfectly straight wooden dowel into water and photographed it to illustrate the point: http://imgur.com/jlLZ0

Here, have a Google Image Search on "Little Crater Lake" in Oregon Those are WHOLE TREES you see on the bottom of the water.

(Not to be confused with the BIG Crater Lake in central Oregon.)

The water there is COLD! I mean FREAKIN' COLD! Part of the fun of visiting the place is waiting for dumbasses to jump in the water, then freaking and scrambing to get back out as fast as possible.
