...except for The Incredibles, no Pizza Planet truck there.

On the other hand, I didn't know Doc Hudson of Cars was in The Incredibles. Time for the freeze-frame!

Its in The Incredibles, its right after they crash land the Winnebago in the background, very small and blurry but its very much the pizza truck.

And John Lasseter (executive producer) says it is.

It's apparently a blur in the final scene (there are better pictures than the one provided in the blog post), but still there.

When Randall is banished, the truck can be seen parked outside the mobile home. (This is the same trailer as in A Bug's Life, but with different people, and moved to a bayou.)

It all takes place in one universe!

Somewhere out there is a continent filled with nothing but vehicles from Cars, and one continent has the Supers in it from Incredibles. Everwhere are living, talking bugs and the toys come to life when you're not looking! Monsters come out and scare little kids at nights (or make them laugh) and Pizza planet is a global conglomerate!

It's a conspiracy, man...

[–]dreamqueen9103 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hypothetically, it's all the same universe and the same continent. (except Cars) In Incredibles the Supers have to be quiet about their abilities and not use them. So normal people might not know of them,(Like the baby-sitter) and if they do, they know they can't use their powers. No one knows about talking bugs because they're too small, no one knows about talking toys because they're too careful, No one knows about talking fish because people can't hear them, and I assume at a certain age kids forget about the monsters in the closets. It could all be the exact same place! (except Cars, but fuck Cars) It could be here! Dun dun duuuunnn!

[–]Li17 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Cars can exist in the same universe as a movie. It's not a representation of the real world but a glimpse at the kind of entertainment they enjoy.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points ago

[–]fubes2000 147 points148 points ago

If you do some digging about Pixar you'll find that pretty much every single movie/franchise they've done was hashed out to some degree during a lunch in the 90s before Toy Story 1 was made. This is how/why characters from future movies turn up in older movies.

ie. there is a screengrab out there from Toy Story 1 [during the car chase] with Wall-E in the background.

[–]samdecimus 37 points38 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Wasn't the common consensus that that Wall-E cameo in Toy Story was fake?

[–]C_Caveman 15 points16 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well it looks very questionable to say the least. It would make sense since it seems that the trash can is moving if this video turns out to be true.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

[–]Nashoo 0 points1 point ago

Not true, I just watched The Incredibles again and Wall-E is not in that garage.

[–]filemeaway 6 points7 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yes, the video is completely fake. All you have to do is watch the scene on the DVD. There is nothing in the driveway.

[–]maximomore2 52 points53 points ago

They talk about it in A Pixar Story. I was bored and wanted to kill time so I put on on netflix.

I watched it too. It was already on, and I couldn't find the remote, and I couldn't get up to change the channel because I had too much muscle soreness from my job on the oil rig. So I just watched it while waiting for my hot girlfriend to come home.

[–]AliSalsa 158 points159 points ago

[–]Aurash91 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Is it worth a watch?

[–]Tanglebrook 6 points7 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Absolutely (just finished it). Almost overwhelming, and a relief when you realize that it's a huge success story...with that amount of talent and with that correct a vision, how could the Devil leave them so completely alone?

If you love animation or just their movies or whatever, watch it.

EDIT: Oh, and if you happen to like special effects, a few years after A Pixar Story was released Leslie Iwerks did another documentary called Industrial Light and Magic: Creating the Impossible. The link goes to a 720p torrent since I couldn't find any legit way of watching it. Seems good but I haven't seen it yet.

EDIT2: Seen it and it's just as good.

A Pixar Story was very entertaining.

[–]CaspianX2 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

As I recall, the movies they hashed out were after Toy Story was released, and they were A Bug's Life, Monsters Inc., Finding Nemo, and Wall-E.

I don't know where the ideas for the rest of them all originated, but I know Incredibles was Brad Bird's brainchild, and he proposed the idea after Pixar hired him. Cars was largely inspired by Route 66. Wall-E's concept originated when Pixar's staff asked themselves what the worst possible job in the world would be. Ratatouille was originally the idea of one Pixar staffer who just couldn't make it work, so Brad Bird took it over. And Cars 2 was conceived while Pixar's staff were traveling around the world doing a press tour for the first Cars film.

[–]Wifflepig 4 points5 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Cars was inspired by a road-trip vacation Lasseter took with his family, and his love for car racing. It was documented in The Pixar Story.

edit: They also didn't napkin all the storyboards before Toy Story 1. All they had was TS1, and it was a near train wreck with Disney's meddling. They slammed together, in a few weeks, what they wanted it to be - and that's what we got today. They didn't know it was going to be a hit, they were in the red - and it was after TS1 that they started working on A Bug's Life. It wasn't until after that when they started producing films more than one at the same time.

[–]myhandleonreddit 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And didn't Reddit's beloved Joss Whedon help rewrite the script for Toy Story?

[–]SugarBeef 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I thought cars was inspired by Doc Hollywood?

[–]Japeth 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well also these films take years to produce, so I'm sure they had character models from future films done as earlier films were being made. Like how Lotso was in Up, I'm sure at that point Toy Story 3 was far enough along that they had Lotso designed.

[–]brazilliandanny 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It also helps that it takes years to develop each film. So by the time you're almost done one your already in preproduction/character development for the next one. Makes it easier to plant them before the film is released.

[–]gorbachev 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

[–]takemo 14 points15 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You think they spruce up background props/characters to come up with their hero characters?

Wouldn't it be more likely that since Pixar films take about 4 years to complete, and there is overlap, that they could slip in a character in development just before finishing up a film, and that that would explain why the look like the early concepts?

But pixar handles the re-dubbing and distribution of studio ghibli films now doesn't it? The companies are quite closely linked anyway.

I think they also have their original animation prop, the beach ball, in every movie.

Also, John Ratzenberger does voice acting in most (if not all) Pixar movies as well (Mack from Cars, The Underminer from The Incredibles, Hamm from Toy Story, etc.).

[–]superdago 26 points27 points ago

Last summer I went to Pixar and met Pete Docter. I asked him if Molly was supposed to be Boo, and he replied no, it wasn't their intention.

I was sort of sad, but then I remembered I was having a conversation with Pete Docter so I got over it.

[–]chrixar 6 points7 points ago

Makes sense that it wouldn't be Boo since they are making Monsters U, a prequel to Monsters, Inc instead of a sequel.

[–]cricketpants 11 points12 points ago

[–]ESJ 5 points6 points ago

Wait, I think you have your characters confused. Isn't Molly the doll in Bonnie's room? The character playing with the blue kitty is just some unnamed girl who attends Sunnyside Daycare.

[–]Willis13579 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Critics often understand work better than the creators. Who's he to say they aren't linked? I haven't seen Toy Story 3, but if there are connections outside of their both be girls that look similar, go with it.

[–]jamescagney 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Agreed. The meaning of art is not owned or controlled by its creator but by the viewers / the public.

Just like the meaning of words / language.

Not to mention that movies (especially Pixar movies) are team efforts that aren't fully controlled by any one person.

and Pixar loves you. they respect the viewer, and go the extra distance to add grace and finesse that few others bother with. and if you've never seen Iron Giant, do; Brad Bird's love letter to viewers before he was with Pixar.

Probably relatively minor, but directive A113 in Wall-E shares a name with conference room A113 in the incredibles (I have a 2 year old son, and have seen both movies A LOT)...

[–]hofftv 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

A113 isn't just a Pixar easter egg, a ton of animated shows and films use it. A113 is a reference to the room number at CalArts where the animation students studied.

Actually this number shows up a in a lot of movies and is reference to a class room. I'm sure if do a search for A113 it will pull it up.

Meanwhile, over at Disney, they are writing naughty words in the clouds and trying to figure out how to insert the next penis in their movie.

One of my lecturers (one of the modules is Capturing the Creative Spark) is now making a video about how many Disney characters are copied from one movie to another. I've seen bits of it and really, many characters are literally copied, only some small details and colors are different. But the whole movement, alignment, main objects are absolutely identical. However, unlike Pixar, Disney probably did this to save money, as it's much cheaper than drawing a whole completely new scene.

In Finding Nemo, the pizza truck from Toy Story can be seen when they cross some road.

Don't forget that Dinoco was the gas station in toy story, and it was the sponsor in Cars.

I find those last two to be a bet meh. The girl looks vaguely like Boo, but I think any cartoon girl with dark hair and big eyes would look like boo. And the car is just the same make and color (although the picture is small, so maybe).

not as exciting, but they make a lot of references to Emeryville, where their studio is located. In the opening car chase in The Incredibles, the police dispatcher says "shots fired on San Pablo Avenue" which is half a block away, and is essentially West Oakland, where the crack whores trick. There's also a quick shout out to Emeryville in Cars.

Fucking magnets, how do they work?

[–]BukkRogerrs 1 point2 points ago

Your mind was blown because Pixar put some of their characters in other movies for a few seconds? This kind of thing isn't very unusual.

Both Disney and Pixar love to hide references to their movies in other movies. :)

As is the A113, which is used in I believe all of the Pixar movies.

Bear with me here, i'm not big on pixar movies.. is it that they just use the same model files over and over, or are these all characters that appear in different films? I'm missing the mind-blowing aspect of this i think.

[–]machpe[S] 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's different films, the characters show up everywhere. Sometimes even referencing films that weren't out yet at the time.

[–]Y0urMom 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Given how long it takes to model some of those characters i imagine it's in their best interest to reuse as many of them as possible.

I think it's remarkable that some of these cameos happen BEFORE said movie is ever released. I caught the Dug one in Ratatouille during a rewatch with some friends. They didn't believe me ("Up came out AFTER Ratatouille... there's no way!")

I like the interpretation of Boo in Toy Story 3. Looks a lot alike. And I dont care what anyone says about these movies, they are all great. and I love when they do this stuff. I am pretty sure the old man playing chess in one of the short films they make is in Toy Story 2. He is the guy who paints woody.

I once attended a talk by Jeremy Wickery, an ex-Pixar employee, and he said that Pixar are always working on 7 movies concurrently in different stages of production.

He also said that Pixar always put characters from upcoming movies into released movies as a small hint of things to come, as the characters for the upcoming movie are already finalized.

I don't see why it is "mind blowing" to retroactively place characters from previous movies into a new movie. If characters from new movies had been hiding old movies the whole time, then that would be impressive

Looks like they know what they're doing and then some. I interned in 3D animation. It took an entire weekend on 1-3 computers to render an entire animation of 20-30 seconds. Your story has to be completely solid and done before any graphics take place. Pixar <3

it's much easier to reuse 3d models used in other films, than to start from scratch from everything.

known Pixar reuses characters for years. I thought it was common knowledge by now. Pixar has even gone on the record telling viewers that they did this in many interviews. Why is this post/thread even here.
