Rules

  1. No screenshots, or pictures with added or superimposed text. This includes image macros, comics, info-graphics and most diagrams. Text (e.g. a URL) serving to credit the original author is exempt.

  2. No gore or porn. NSFW content must be tagged.

  3. No personal information. This includes anything hosted on Facebook's servers, as they can be traced to the original account holder. Stalking & harassment will not be tolerated.

  4. No solicitation of votes (including "cake day" posts), posts with their sole purpose being to communicate with another redditor, or [FIXED] posts. DAE posts go in /r/DoesAnybodyElse. "Fixed" posts should be added as a comment to the original image.

  5. Submissions must link directly to a specific image file or to an image hosting website with minimal ads. We do not allow blog hosting of images ("blogspam"), but links to albums on image hosting websites are okay. URL shorteners are prohibited.

  • If your submission appears to be filtered but definitely meets the above rules, please send us a message with a link to the comments section of your post (not a direct link to the image). Don't delete it as that just makes the filter hate you!

  • If you come across any rule violations, please report the submission or message the mods and one of us will remove it!

Please also try to come up with original post titles. Submissions that use certain clichés/memes will be automatically tagged with a warning.

This is the most priceless gif I've ever seen.

What great luck, I'm selling this "priceless" gif for only $70. I take PayPal, or if you use PSN I already have the info I need.

I'm a pretty big fan of both. Calvin and Hobbes is a surgical strike appeals to the kid in me, while Far Side hits my funny bone with a more generalized humor.

Yeah, there's no need to choose or rank them. For one thing, they're different types of comics.

[–]dakta 1 point2 points ago

I agree, I enjoy them both for exactly the reasons you profess.

Finally, my day has come. I came up with this screen name in 6th grade and used it for AIM after my dad showed me his Gary Larson collection. I love everyone in here on some /trees shit.

About 2 years ago i received the whole far side collection in 2 huge books, greatest present i have ever revived for Xmas :)

I gave that to my dad this past Christmas. And then I "borrowed" it for a few days.

RE: Online Use of Far Side Cartoons

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

I'm walking a fine line here.

On the one hand, I confess to finding it quite flattering that some of my fans have created web sites displaying and / or distributing my work on the Internet. And, on the other, I'm struggling to find the words that convincingly but sensitively persuade these Far Side enthusiasts to "cease and desist" before they have to read these words from some lawyer.

What impact this unauthorized use has had (and is having) in tangible terms is, naturally, of great concern to my publishers and therefore to me -- but it's not the focus of this letter. My effort here is to try and speak to the intangible impact, the emotional cost to me, personally, of seeing my work collected, digitized, and offered up in cyberspace beyond my control.

Years ago I was having lunch one day with the cartoonist Richard Guindon, and the subject came up how neither one of us ever solicited or accepted ideas from others. But, until Richard summed it up quite neatly, I never really understood my own aversions to doing this: "It's like having someone else write in your diary," he said. And how true that statement rang with me. In effect, we drew cartoons that we hoped would be entertaining or, at the very least, not boring; but regardless, they would always come from an intensely personal, and therefore original perspective.

To attempt to be "funny" is a very scary, risk-laden proposition. (Ask any stand-up comic who has ever "bombed "on stage.) But if there was ever an axiom to follow in this business, it would be this: be honest to yourself and -- most important -- respect your audience.

So, in a nutshell (probably an unfortunate choice of words for me), I only ask that this respect be returned, and the way for anyone to do that is to please, please refrain from putting The Far Side out on the Internet. These cartoons are my "children," of sorts, and like a parent, I'm concerned about where they go at night without telling me. And, seeing them at someone's web site is like getting the call at 2:00 a.m. that goes, "Uh, Dad, you're not going to like this much, but guess where I am."

I hope my explanation helps you to understand the importance this has for me, personally, and why I'm making this request.

Please send my "kids" home. I'll be eternally grateful.

Most respectfully,

Gary Larson

He should make a far side website and put them on there. Print is dying. He can control them there and have everyone look at them.

[–]pillage 11 points12 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly, Gary should call up Scott Adams. Almost every Dilbert I see linked is linked to the Dilbert site.

[–]CoughSyrup 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

From what I've heard about Scott Adams recently, this might not be the best idea.

[–]masonmason22 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's probably to do with this stuff.

One, and then another.

Those are the comment threads on articles (just so you can see reddit's commentary too).

[–]PsykickPriest -3 points-2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Big difference, Scott Adams is a douche, whereas Gary Larson is cool.

[–]pillage 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Are you that thick you can't tell the difference between me saying he should emulate his business model and me saying that he should adopt his personal ideology? Hint: one of them I said and the other you imagined.

Absolutely. Larson risks pulling a Beatles here.

[–]PsykickPriest -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yeah, absolutely. And I don't think it would keep any real fans from purchasing his books, either. I discovered Perry Bible Fellowship online, and have since bought every book he's published.

[–]StochasticOoze 26 points27 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Meh. I can understand him not wanting somebody to put all the strips in an archive someplace, but posting random singles around the internet seems pretty harmless.

[–]dakta 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

He's not hating on random singles, he's worried about organized efforts outside his publishers' control.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sorry I cannot find source, but I've heard that post was made years ago relating to websites specifically dedicated to posting entire anthologies of Gary Larson material.

My effort here is to try and speak to the intangible impact, the emotional cost to me, personally, of seeing my work collected, digitized, and offered up in cyberspace beyond my control.

I don't really know though. All I know is that I love the man's comics. edit: honestly, source is just random chatter on the internets. so... =/ =P

[–]snakeypoo 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

ultimately he's going to lose his audience, or at the very least it will diminish greatly if his comics aren't shared on the internet. surely the point of the comics is to make people laugh and so the more people that he can make laugh the better he should feel about it. its sad that his work is being guarded like a treasure chest, so his publishers can keep making money off him. we all have to make money sure, but this is neither the best way to do that, nor the way in which you can reach the biggest audience.

[–]jurble 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I suppose this is why I've only ever seen like 5 Farside comics my entire life. I never bought it, and I was born after their time (same with Calvin and Hobbes too, but they're all over the internets). But I sure as hell ain't gonna buy them. I don't even know if I like them!

[–]Supersnazz 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Whilst I agree with the fact that he has the right to dictate how his art is used, his argument is pretty flimsy considering he has whored his "children" out to any number of card, mug or t-shirt manufacturers for profit.

Having said that I also think he meant that he hasn't got a problem with individual cartoons being posted occasionally, just large unauthorised collections of his work.

[–]TheBingage 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I got incredibly excited thinking Gary Larson was a Redditor.

I then got to the end and was very sadly mistaken.

[–]nugget9k -4 points-3 points ago

Just wondering if you posted this to tell the OP that he should not have due to Gary Larson's request?

[–]VonBrewskie -1 points0 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Good job. This is the kind of stuff I like to see. Intelligent, insightful appeals by an artist to show mutual respect, instead of crazy ranting and litigation. I will no longer seek Far Side comics on the 'net. It's a good excuse to dig all of my old Far Side Gallery books out of the closet (again)

[–]dustinechos -4 points-3 points ago

[–]dustinechos 0 points1 point ago

... The world does not have a limited supply of far side. Me viewing it does not detract from a total supply. It is infinitely reproducible. His letter and your comment both seem to not grasp this concept.

Unfortunately he's old school and doesn't want his stuff posted on the internet, and because most of us really like the guy, we don't do it (well, most of us don't). I think it's really going to prevent the younger generation from getting to know his work, but that's how it is.

They aren't really comparable, other than they're both cartoons.

Kliban, on the other hand, is the only reason Gary Larson ever made a nickel and a dollar.

[–]TargetDowneyJr 1 point2 points ago

One of my favorites as a kid! Made me laugh at all the frightening thoughts I had of clowns killing children.... Wish I could find this one for people who have no idea what I'm talking about. Trying to explain a funny moment to someone who wasn't there is one thing, but trying to explain a Far Side comic is like slitting the throat of comedy itself.

[–]capncaveman 0 points1 point ago

My dad once had a "The Far Side" day calendar. Except it wasn't so much a calendar as it was a future-teller, because I would get impatient and rip off the pages to get to the next comic. Upvote for nostalgia :D

Not trying to rain on anyones parade, but I don't get Far Side comics. For instance, the one you posted didn't even get me to smile. Is there something I'm missing?

[–]fross 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The child is attending a gifted school, hence he is presumably very intelligent. However, he cannot open the door, because he is pushing instead of pulling. The joke is that many highly intelligent people who are experts in their field, often can't do simple things that the rest of us take for granted, probably because their heads are off in the clouds thinking of whatever they are working on. He may be doing integration in his head, but he's not aware of his surroundings enough to work out how to use a door.

[–]nylira 2 points3 points ago*

I understood all of that upon viewing the comic, but I still don't find it funny.

[–]fross 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm not sure what more you're asking for, then. Given that a lot of people do find it amusing, the problem is yours, not the comic. :)

[–]brumbrum21 4 points5 points ago

[–]TeethofBusey 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I just accepted the fact that I was different. That I didn't like Calvin and Hobbes. I didn't go out of my way to say I hated it, and I respected that people liked it growing up. I even thought some of the fan art posted around here was "cute" and "heart-warming". But I don't think I ever laughed at a single C&H strip. I feel this way with most comics, but I always looked forward to the Far Side comics.

[–]Todomanna 3 points4 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think Calvin and Hobbes was more philisophical than humorous.

The Far Side is primarily a gag comic.

[–]PsykickPriest 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you look at enough Far Sides you can determine a few rough quasi-philosophical or political concepts. I recall one in particular with a couple guys fishing in a rowboat, with a mushroom cloud rising on the horizon, and one says to the other "Well, screw the limit then, I guess." (guessing on the quote)

Yes. As an owner of all of the Far Side Gallery books, 100 times yes. Calvin & Hobbes is great on it's own right, but there's a lot to be said about how much humor The Far Side could always convey in usually a single panel.

The Far Side is one of my fondest childhood memories.

My dad used to get one of those "Far Side a Day" daily calendars every year. The highlight of my morning throughout most of grade school and even into high school was ripping off yesterday's comic and reading the new one as soon as I woke up and stumbled into the bathroom.

...now I really want to go find a big Far Side archive or something. I haven't read any appreciable volume of these things in years.

I think about this comic every time I approach a door with an ambiguous handle.

That is a hard one to decide for me, cause they're both to amazing to not love equally.

I prefer Calvin and Hobbes but The Far Side is definitely my second favorite comic.

I started out preferring Far Side over Calvin & Hobbes (age 15), later on though C&H seemed to tug at my heart strings more and it slowly eeked its way to the top. That being sad, the jump from 2nd to whatever else could be out there is quite a gap.

can't really put the two against each other. I love the in-depth nerdiness of Far Side, and the humane warmth and "profoundness" of some C&H stuff.

The fact that I don't give two shits about Calvin & Hobbes probably explains why I receive inexplicable downvotes for every reddit-friendly comment I post. Do your god damn worst hive mind.

Huge fan of both. Could never choose

Downvoted. They're both excellent, and deserve to stand as exemplars of the comic artform. Arguing which one is better is stupid. CAN I GET AN AMEN.

I agree with you but the last thing we need is a comic war on /pics.

/comics is pretty awesome though.

It's young Donald Trump, late for class again, yet he came 1 hour early.

Agreed. I have a Far Side book, but I see no Calvin & Hobbes one around.

Well my children love this comic, as much as do I, but seriously Gary Larson, dig a deep hole and fuck it. Forever.

I hate pretentious artists more than anything.

I don't have kids either.
